Tips for Sizing a Portable AC
Please note that the maximum room size of the above units is only an estimate of the theoretical maximum. The actual amount of BTUs needed to cool a room varies depending on the environmental conditions of the room. In addition, these square-footage estimates assume an average ceiling height of 8.5 ft. If you have questions or need assistance determining the correct size portable AC for your room, please call us at (800) 934-9194. Our product experts are happy to give you a free consultation tailored to your environment.
Installation Instructions
All portable air conditioners require you to connect an exhaust hose to vent hot air to the outside of the room. Venting the unit through a window is a popular choice for many users. To make installation as easy as possible for our customers, we include a complimentary window kit and simple setup instructions with each of our units. If window ventilation is not possible for your application, please call us to discuss other venting options. Portable ACs can also be vented into a drop ceiling plenum, through a hole in the wall, or through a sliding door.
Removing Collected Water
All portable ACs collect condensate water as they cool. Much of this condensate is evaporated and exhausted through an exhaust hose. However, a portion of it – the specific amount depends on your environmental conditions – remains in the unit. This water must be removed regularly. There are three ways you can remove condensate water:
- Manual Emptying - Remove the collection bucket when it becomes full, empty it, and replace.
- Gravity Draining – Connect a drain hose to the unit's continuous drainage port to let water flow out of the unit continuously and be deposited into a nearby drain.
- Condensate Pump – Some units are equipped with internal condensate pumps, and others can accommodate external condensate pump accessories. This type of drainage is popular if you do not want to rely on the force of gravity when draining. Some external pumps, such as the Hartell Condensate Pump, provide up to 15 ft. of vertical lift.
