Like the Austin Air Healthmate, the Austin Air Healthmate Plus Air Purifier gives you reliable protection against a variety of airborne contaminants, from common household allergens to smoke and chemical odors. The Healthmate Plus, however, features a more absorbent activated carbon filter bed to combat heavier chemical odors, including formaldehyde. Classified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a "probable human carcinogen"—formaldehyde exposure causes irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat and may aggravate existing respiratory conditions. The Healthmate Plus absorbs and contains formaldehyde odors along with symptom-triggering allergens and other airborne odors from large spaces up to 1,500 square feet.
The Austin Healthmate Plus:
The Austin Air Healthmate Plus Air Purifier—also known as the Austin Air HM450 Air Purifier—uses Austin Air's signature 360-degree progressive filtering system to remove the most symptom-aggravating allergens, odors, and chemicals from your home. With steady use, you may see a reduction in your allergy, asthma, and MCS symptoms or even eliminate them all together.
Every minute, the system pulls in room air from all sides of the air cleaner. Air passes through a 4-stage HEPA/carbon combination filter and is blown back out into your room using the Clean Air Pocket vent. This extensive filtration system cleans your air faster and more efficiently than conventional air purifiers, which means quicker relief from your symptoms.
The Healthmate Plus Air Cleaner 4-stage combination filter includes:
Overall, this long-lasting combination filter eliminates 99.97% of airborne pollutants that are 0.3 microns and larger, 95% of particles that measure 0.1 micron and smaller, and more than 3,000 types of toxic gases and odors. You'll rest easy knowing that you and your family are breathing the cleanest air possible.

Made in the USA, the Austin Air Healthmate Plus Air Purifier is constructed with sturdy, long-lasting components that boost efficiency and energy savings. These include an energy-efficient Permanent-Split Capacitor (PSC) motor, a powerful centrifugal fan, and an all-steel outer body. The long-life PSC motor is rated for continuous use at high RPMs and is mounted on shock absorbers to minimize noise. When running, the Healthmate Plus motor draws less current and reduces your operating costs by 50% when compared to other air purifiers.

Comments about Austin Air Healthmate Plus Air Purifier:
I bought this product because we have alot of raw unfinished wood in our house right now. The fumes from the wood were making it difficult to sleep at night. I put this unit in the room adjacent to the bedroom because it is too loud to be in the bedroom itself. It definitely did the job and helped me sleep better but I wish it weren't so loud. In comparison with a friend's Austin Air Allergy machine, the LOW setting on this unit is as loud as the HIGH setting on the Allergy machine. I suppose that's because it has to be powerful enough to pull air through the additional chemical filter, but it's so loud that I have to turn it off sometimes just for a little peace and quiet. I would probably buy another one if I had a real serious problem with formaldehyde, etc that other machines could not fix, but I've just purchased a Healthmate Junior in hopes that I can leave it running more often and still clean the air sufficently to allow for a good night's sleep.

Comments about Austin Air Healthmate Plus Air Purifier:
The Austin Air Healthmate Plus Air Purifier is a fantastic product that comes in a durable, industrial configuration. I use mine in the basement where I have set up a gym. Prior to using the air purifier, I would sense a heavy air quality while working out. Eventually, this caused me to develop exercise-induced asthma that required me to use an inhaler after working out. Not good! After I got the Austin, the air quality improved substantially, and I no longer need the inhaler. I think that the purifier was able to remove the dominant allergen in my basement--the invisible mold spore (and possibly some noxious fumes from the water heater).
As for quality, it is bar none. The drone of the machine lets you know that your air is being cleaned and cleaned fast. It is a tad loud at the highest setting (of which there is only 3 settings). But I am in the camp that believes that to get effective filtration, you need something that lets you know it's working. As mentioned, the controls are very basic, and there's no need to worry about complicated electronics going on the fritz. I personally like the appearance of this unit. It is sturdy and masculine and is perfectly happy working hard in the corner of the room.
Finally, the longevity of the machine is attractive. Filter changes occur less frequently than the other more expensive models that I researched. This is a long run, durable air purifier that will continue to provide service, although at a pricey up front cost.

Comments about Austin Air Healthmate Plus Air Purifier:
I have severe nasal allergies and have made several modifications to our home; such as removing carpeting and adding laminate floors.
I also needed a quality air cleaner. I wanted something that would remove allergens and odors.
The Austin Healthmate Plus has the features I wanted. Should I desire a different level of filtration in the future; all I need do is install the appropiate Austin filter to fit my needs. (It's adaptable.)
My sinuses are less stuffy and we have less cooking odors in our home.

Comments about Austin Air Healthmate Plus Air Purifier:
I use this product in my 1000 sq ft apartment. I leave it on high when I'm out and I sleep with it on low with the bedroom door closed. I was feeling sick from indoor air pollution in my newly constructed apartment. After running this air filter for a couple of days, my symptoms improved significantly. It has also helped with my husband's asthma. I have also noticed that we don't have food odors in the house anymore.
Its quiet setting is a little too loud for me to have it on all the time. But, I am able to sleep with it on, so it's still pretty quiet. The nob selector for low, medium, and high is mislabeled, but it's obvious which setting is which once you turn it on.
I love that it is easy to roll from room to room in my one-level apartment. It is too heavy to carry (if I had stairs, that would be difficult), but it rolls well. It filters the air so fast; I always notice an immediate improvement when I turn it on.

Comments about Austin Air Healthmate Plus Air Purifier:
I ordered this air purifier to address a severe odor problem generated from a water leak in an adjacent apartment. The water damage created a nauseating odor. Air deodorizers were very limited in controlling the odor. This air purifier would clear the room out after about an 1.5 hours on high speed. The fan makes some noise on high, but air volume is larger than the competing models. I don't regret buying this air purifier. It made the difference between being forced into the expense of relocating, or riding out an unpleasant situation until it was corrected.

Comments about Austin Air Healthmate Plus Air Purifier:
After owning this for several months, I can happily say it works well to clean the air. I use it in the bedroom at night and I have been 90% less congested which is amazing. When I change my whole-house air filter, it barely looks like it needs it. Impressive. However, this unit is VERY loud, even on low. Watching television with the unit on low is a challenge. Sleeping with it on low is fine for us since we love the white noise. My parents have the same unit, about 2 years older, and there is no comaprison in terms of noise. I don't know how they have changed these in the last few years, but you can barely notice the sound on low at my paret's house. Also, the quietest setting on my unit is in the middle of the dial, which shows in the manual to be the medium setting. I have a feeling my unit is somehow not quite right, that this unit would be considered an outlet "second". I do wish I had pursued an exchange, but I did not as I was desperate for allergy relief at the time and did not want to go without it for even a few days.
Comments about Austin Air Healthmate Plus Air Purifier:
A recent move from Arizona to Maryland brought with it a huge climate change. I started to get Asthma like symptoms, which I had never experience before. It was so bad I ended up in the emergency room. Every night when I would go to bed I couldn't breath. My daughter suggested I get a Austin Air since she has them in her home. I purchased my Austin Air Healthmate Plus and have had great improvement in my breathing and overall health. Thank you Austin Air!
Comments about Austin Air Healthmate Plus Air Purifier:
We got this to deal with our smaller upstairs -- which has cleaner air than the downstairs. For the downstairs we got the IQAir. My wife has serious allergies and we wanted an air purifier that we could set up in our bedroom and that was a bit less expensive and less of a hassle in terms of changing filters than the IQAir. The bedroom and the upstairs are less onerous than the downstairs so we went for the AustinAir as it had good reviews, was a bit cheaper (although still pricey, I have to say, hence the 4 stars) and seemed simple enough to operate. It is simpler -- just three levels on a dial. We set it on high ("III") for a few hours to clear things out and that seemed to work well -- although it is *really* loud. Then we cut it back to level "I" which was much quieter. Given the area of a bedroom and adjacent open area that it has to deal with this seems like a manageable task. It is quiet enough on the lower setting to sleep and the air quality has noticeably improved. Now, the IQAir is busy cleaning out the downstairs on a regular basis and I expect that does most of the heavy lifting, but this unit provides the immediate cleaning upstairs which is good because that is where we spend our evenings and sleep. It is clearly not as sophisticated as the IQAir, has fewer settings and makes rather more noise. On the other hand, it is effective, seems to require little maintenance and is about $200 less expensive. If you have really serious air quality issues, I'd say go for the IQAir, but this one is a good supporter for the IQAir and is quite good even on its own.
Comments about Austin Air Healthmate Plus Air Purifier:
We bought this purifier to help with air quality over the winter when many neighbors use wood stoves. It does a great job of getting rid of smoke smell, especially in our baby's room. A bit too loud on medium & high speed.
