Product Overview

It’s easy to see why the Austin Air Healthmate Air Purifier has earned the title of “America’s Favorite Air Cleaner” year after year and is renowned for its reliable protection against everyday air quality problems. Using multi-stage HEPA and carbon filtration, the Austin Air Healthmate removes symptom-triggering allergens, odors, and chemicals from large spaces up to 1,500 square feet.

The Austin Healthmate:

  • Removes dust, pollen, tobacco smoke, chemical vapors, gases, viruses, bacteria, and more
  • Is ideal for allergy- and asthma-sufferers and those who have chemical sensitivities
  • Features a 360-degree filtering system that draws air in from all sides of the unit and passes it through a 4-stage filter for the most thorough air filtration
  • Traps 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns and 95% of particles that measure 0.1 micron and smaller
  • Needs a filter replacement only once every 5 years, making it an economical choice
  • Requires minimal maintenance, just periodic vacuuming of the steel outer housing to ensure optimal airflow and a good wipe-down to keep the surface sparkling clean

Great for Allergy- and Asthma-Sufferers

The Austin Air Healthmate Air Purifier—also known as the Austin Air HM400 Air Purifier—uses Austin Air's signature 360-degree progressive filtering system to remove the most symptom-aggravating allergens, odors, and chemicals from your home. With steady use, you may see a reduction in your allergy, asthma, and multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) symptoms or even eliminate them all together.

Every minute, the system pulls in room air from all sides of the air cleaner. Air passes through a 4-stage HEPA/carbon combination filter and is blown back out into your room using the Clean Air Pocket vent. This extensive filtration system cleans your air faster and more efficiently than conventional air purifiers, which means quicker relief from your symptoms.

The Healthmate Air Cleaner 4-stage combination filter includes:

  • PERMAFILT Pre-Filter - During stage 1, air passes through a cotton PERMAFILT pre-filter, which captures particles easily seen by the naked eye, such as large dust and pet dander particles.

  • Medium Particle Filter - Next, a medium particle filter traps small- to medium-size allergens, such as mold, pollen, and dust mites.

  • Carbon Blend Filter – Next, air moves through a 15-pound carbon and natural zeolite filter where odors, chemicals, gases, fumes, and VOCs are absorbed and locked away.

  • Medical-Grade HEPA Filter - Lastly, air glides through 60 square feet of true medical-grade HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) material where it is scrubbed free of harmful bacteria and viruses as well as smaller pollen, mold, pet dander, dust, and ragweed particles.

Overall, this long-lasting combination filter eliminates 99.97% of airborne pollutants that are 0.3 microns and larger, 95% of particles that measure 0.1 micron and smaller, and more than 3,000 types of toxic gases and odors. You'll rest easy knowing that you and your family are breathing the cleanest air possible.

Durable and Efficient Construction

Made in the USA

Made in the USA, the Austin Air Healthmate Air Purifier is constructed with sturdy, long-lasting components that boost efficiency and energy savings. These include an energy-efficient Permanent-Split Capacitor (PSC) motor, a powerful centrifugal fan, and an all-steel outer body. The long-life PSC motor is rated for continuous use at high RPMs and is mounted on shock absorbers to minimize noise. When running, the Healthmate motor draws less current and reduces your operating costs by 50% when compared to other air purifiers.

Additional Features

  • Easy Controls - Choose from 3 purification speeds using the simple manual knob control.

  • Smooth-Roll Casters - Roll your air purifier from spot to spot for clean air throughout your home.

  • Independently Tested - Like all Austin Air Purifiers, the Healthmate has been independently tested for filtration effectiveness by third-party and U.S. government labs.

  • Easy Filter Changes - Just remove the bottom cover of the air purifier to access the old filter and drop a new one in.

Summary

The Austin Air Healthmate helps reduce your chronic allergy, asthma, and MCS symptoms, creating a healthier environment for you and your family.

What Customers Love

  • Easy to Use - No complicated control panels, the Healthmate includes 1 manual knob control to control your fan speed and turn the unit on and off.
  • Long-Life Filter - The combination HEPA/carbon filter needs to be replaced only once every 5 years under typical use to help save you money on costly filter replacements.

Things to Consider

  • Chemical Removal - Consider whether you need a higher level of chemical filtration. The upgraded Austin Air Healthmate Plus blends potassium iodide into the carbon filter to remove heavier chemicals such as formaldehyde.

My son has asthma and allergies (as do I), and with two big indoor dogs, three kids, active neighborhood kids coming through, and a naturally dusty house we wanted to offset the dander, dust, and potential smell that has been plaguing our home. I researched and narrowed the choices down to this product and two others (Alen and Allerair), but in the end for the money, quality, and reviews this far and away became the winner.

We've had it in our house for close to a month in our family/great room, and the change was immediate and dramatic. Whereas our TV used to show dust within a day of cleaning, after the first week it was virtually dust free. When my mom came over for the holidays she didn't leave with a headache as she had the prior times.

Re the noise, when set to low the noise is hardly noticeable. On medium it is, but tolerable/acceptable (with our active home noise is the least of my concerns, but it may be a distraction if one is used to quiet and peaceable environment), and on high it is a distraction, but we just crank it up to there when we leave or go to bed.

It rolls easily, so moving it around downstairs wasn't a problem. I did heft it up the stairs a couple of times and while not easy, for those who have moved items upstairs it could be much worse. But it's not intended for moving up and down stairs, nor will I do this on a regular basis.

We chose the color black, and it fits in well. My wife was actually pleasantly surprised with its appearance, as she expected it to be unattractive.

Overall we could not be more pleased with the choice of this unit. For the price point we were aiming for (around $500) we are thrilled, and wished we would have purchased one much earlier!

This purifier generates three different levels of white noise, depending on which of three settings you use. It's quiet on the first setting but the 2nd and 3rd highest are nice for masking background and outside noise when you need to sleep without interruption.

Unfortunately, my HM 400 developed a minor rattle after about three years of moderate use. I didn't use it every day, nor did I run it at top speed very often. I was going to send it back for warranty repair, but the noise was only intermittent and ultimately went away after a short while. Meanwhile, the power cord frayed because there was no rubber shield around where the cord came out of the cabinet. Very poor design!

Anyway, after 7 years of light use, the motor is now not working properly at all - it starts out normally but after a minute or so, it begins to vary speed until it slows down and stops working. I am very disappointed in the poor quality of this machine. I took very good care of it, keeping it clean and replacing the expensive ($200) filter when it needed one. This thing should not have failed, considering how expensive it was and all the good press about it.

Be warned - if you buy one and it breaks, you have to ship it back to Buffalo, NY. Austin is not clear about whether you have to pay the shipping and insurance even when you are within the warranty period, so get something in writing before you ship it back. In any case, you are risking your money if you buy one - you cannot assume you will get a quality product.

Comments about Austin Air Healthmate Air Purifier:

I wish I had discovered your product five years ago. I love the fact it covers 1500 square feet. I presently have 11 air cleaners at home and at the office, often in open areas. One Healthmate will replace several of my present air cleaners. The unit is quiet and attractive. My wife let me put it in the living room, and that's no small task. She is picky, picky, picky.
I bought a second unit for my daughter so my grandsons aren't contaminated by her dogs. The fact the filter lasts 5 years is the only way to go with her. She's not into routine maintenance. The rollers are neat and allow you to cover the whole house, even a large house like ours. The rollers were even attached upon arrival. Just take the unit out of the box, turn it on and your up an running. The 360 degree air intake is a neat feature that my other air cleaners do not have. The air return is powerful, yet easily positioned so as not to cause problems. I also like the fact the unit is quiet and does not use excessive amounts of electricity. This is important since most my air purifiers are left running for twenty-four hours per day. In reading the filter specs, I was amazed at the length Austin went to in order to provide pure air. I don't remember seeing such extensive filtration, especially at such a reasonable price. Both units I ordered arrived within a day or two. That was important and unusual. I had a question on registration and called the company. A person answered immediately, was very easy to understand, and answered my question in a polite and knowledgeable fashon. My current thinking is that I need a third unit for the office.

        So Far So Good

        By Julie

Comments about Austin Air Healthmate Air Purifier:

After doing a good amount of research I settled on the Austin Air. It seems to be doing the job I bought it for to reduce odors and pollen in our lower level. Happy with purchase. I only wish it wasn't so gigantic. It is VERY loud on high so we only run it at that speed overnight when necessary.

Comments about Austin Air Healthmate Air Purifier:

Upon receiving the product, I unpacked it from the box and was able to get it up and running in less than 1 minute. In addition, it purifies the air really well, removing dust from my cramped studio apartment. This makes a great purifier, especially if you do not have any windows in your apartment. It works well, and on the lowest settings, is very quite. It definitely is well worth the purchase. In addition, Sylvane hooked me up with a 10% discount, which helped my student budget. Thanks Sylvane and Austin Air!

I wanted a well built, simple machine. This product is exactly that. Plug it in and select the power level. However, it's hard to assess any air purifier's efficiency. It does seem that the air is cleaner but how do you really know?

Sylvane was a pleasure to work with...from ordering to delivery - absolutely smooth.

        Satisfied Customer

        By KellyAnn

Comments about Austin Air Healthmate Air Purifier:

We heat with a forced hot air wood furnace, which is probably not the best thing for someone with seasonal winter allergies (dust). Despite constant vacuuming and dusting, dust would show on our countertops in the afternoon sunlight. Since purchasing the Austin Air Healthmate Air Purifier, our home is so much cleaner. There is no longer dust dancing through the air and the countertops look clean.

The unit is easy to roll to a different room and I have even carried it upstairs (though it is a bit heavy at 40 lbs). I cleaned an unused room and watched dust fly through the air. I brought the unit into the room, turned it on, and watched the dust swirl around and get sucked into the unit. The air in the room was clean in no time!

The unit can be noisy on medium and high speeds. We like background noise so run it on medium at night when we're sleeping. It is the size of a small side table (or large humidifier), so take advantage of the color choices offered. You can set a plant on it to help it blend with your decor.

We are extremely happy with the quality of the product. Other products we looked at were made of plastic while this unit is housed in metal. The rollers are heavy duty and the 5 year warranty (even on the filter) can't be beat. Free shipping and a 30-day money back guarantee was hard to pass on!

        Frequently Asked Questions
How often do you need to replace the filter?
Austin Air purifier filters typically last 5 years under normal residential use.
        Do these units emit ozone?
No, Austin Air purifiers do not emit ozone during operation.
I'm thinking of buying this for a small bathroom area that gets high traffic use and will not accommodate a ceiling fan. Will this work in a space that small?
The Austin Healthmate Air Purifier will treat and clean the air in spaces as large as 1,500 square feet. At only 14.5 x 14.5 inches square, and 23 inches tall, it doesn't require a lot of room. To achieve its high-quality air filtration, the Healthmate has a powerful fan that can move up to 400 cubic feet of air per minute. On high speed, there may be a noticeable air current from the machine in your small space. Care should be taken to ensure that the air intake and exhaust vents are not obstructed by objects such as towels or clothing.

As with all electrical appliances, if you use the air purifier in areas where exposure to water is possible, you should exercise caution. Plug this unit into a GFI circuit for safety. Additionally, protect the air purifier from water splashes, which can damage interior components and the control panel.
How much does it cost to run one of these yearly for a residential home? Please include how much filters will cost as well.
The Austin Healthmate uses between 56 and 115 watts of electricity, depending on the fan speed. If it runs for 24 hours a day on low speed, it would use 490 KWH of electricity in a year—which equates to $59 per year at 12 cents per kilowatt hour. On high speed, it would be about twice that. Electricity prices vary, so please check your local costs for comparison. Replacement filters are available here. The current price is $214.99 each, including free shipping; this is equivalent to $43 per year for the filters (prices subject to change). This places the Austin Healthmate among the best performing air purifiers in terms of total operating costs.
I understand that the filter in the Austin Air Healthmate Air Purifier lasts for 5 years under normal circumstances. Is it necessary to change the pre-filter before that time, and how will I know when to change the filters?
Yes, typically you need to change the filter every 5 years under normal residential use. If you run the unit 24 hours a day, then change the filter every 2-3 years. If you run the unit 8 hours a day, then it should be changed every 4-5 years. It's not necessary to change the pre-filter until you change the filter itself.
What does "normal residential use" mean in terms of filter life?
Normal residential use refers to the basic household use of the air purifier. Austin Air purifier filters are designed to last 5 years when used in a residential setting. In commercial or industrial environments where there might be a higher level of airborne pollutants, filter life may be reduced.
