Air Purifiers Reduce Chemical Exposure in Nail Salons
Like many women, one of my favorite things to do with girlfriends is get a mani/pedi. However, a recent study conducted by researchers at the Cancer Prevention Institute of California and Asian Health Services is making me think twice about getting my nails pampered.
According to a recent WebMD article, researchers monitored the health of 80 female nail salon employees at 20 different nail salons. The participants wore monitors attached to their shirt or coat collar that would measure concentrations of toluene, ethyl acetate, and isopropyl acetate over the course of a shift. Through this monitoring, the research team found that the salon workers were exposed to toluene levels that were twice the amount recommended by the California Environmental Protection Agency for indoor air.
The researchers also asked the salon employees to identify any health symptoms they experienced while working in the salon. The most common health complaints among the women were irritated eyes, noses, throats, and skin, shortness of breath, nausea, and coughing. While nail salon employees are at greater risk of experiencing these symptoms due to frequent exposure to these airborne chemicals, study researcher Thu Quach, Phd, MPH also notes that salon customers are at risk as well.
One solution to reduce exposure to chemicals like toluene is to use an air purifier such as the Airpura V600 Air Purifier, which is specifically designed to target airborne chemicals. The Airpura V600 is equipped with a multi-stage filtration system that includes a 40-square-foot HEPA filter and 18 pounds of enhanced activated carbon to filter out and absorb a variety of airborne pollutants, including:
- Dust mites
This Airpura air purifier can help reduce the unwanted side effects of chemical exposure for both salon employees and patrons. Plus, the V600 is an eco-friendly air purifier. It includes PCB-Free capacitors, zero off-gassing, 93% recyclable all-metal housing, and vacuum-able pre-filters to reduce waste and increase energy efficiency.
