Since I started at Sylvane, I’ve been touting the Miele Marin as one of my favorite vacuums. It’s super easy to move around and you can choose between 3 carpet tools–depending on your home’s floors. When one of my co-workers, Kari, bought a new house that needed a little extra cleaning, I suggested she try the Marin. She was nice enough to take some photos and report back on her experience with this S8 canister vacuum. Check out her pictures and thoughts below:

No matter how hard we try, we all contribute to air pollution. Air Quality Awareness Week highlights a few ways we can all help make our air cleaner–and recognize how air quality affects our overall health.
The EPA offers a few simple ways to get involved, and most involve reducing smog—one of the main ways we contribute to air pollution.
Give one or two of their suggestions a try–you may even start doing them regularly. View some easy and fun activities you can do to improve air quality!

The other day I was vacuuming my daughter’s room when I noticed that my trusty Bissell Lift-Off Pet Vacuum was no longer suctioning up her dropped Cheerios. It was actually flinging them across the room with every sweep. It dawned on me then that it has been some time (a few years, in fact!) that I’ve actually performed any other recommended maintenance on my vacuum besides emptying the dust bin regularly. Clearly, it was time to show a little TLC to the big dusty thing.
And so for me, spring cleaning 2014 began with cleaning and servicing my number one cleaning tool. Here’s how I did it.
Two of my favorite things in life are cooking and spending time with my pets. Unfortunately (and despite my best efforts), they both can cause pretty pungent odors in my home. For years, plug-in and aerosol air fresheners were my go-to solution. But after a while I noticed these “fresh smells” often coincided with headaches and allergy flare-ups. I dug a little deeper and didn’t like what I read—luckily I found better ways to keep my home healthy and odor-free.
What’s on the inside matters most–that’s what I’ve always heard. Not that you would know it by looking at Dyson vacuums, which look more like gadgets than vacuum cleaners.
But when it came to creating the DC65 vacuums, an update to their popular DC41 line, Dyson focused on what’s inside their vacuums. So even though they look like past models, they’re even better than ever. Want more good news? We’re offering 20% off all Dyson models during our vacuum sale (using discount code DYSON20)—including the new DC65 models.
Let’s compare their 3 new models and check out what improvements have been made. More information on our vacuum sale can also be found below, which includes 10% off various other vacuum cleaner brands.

Miele vacuums took home the JD Power and Associates top prize for “Highest Customer Satisfaction” for both upright and canister vacuum categories. In the annual survey, consumers ranked Miele vacuums highest in performance, styling and features. It’s the second win in a row for Miele’s upright vacuums as they continue to impress everyone who uses one.
HEPA filtration, a sealed bagged system, and powerful suction makes for years of healthy living. Its HEPA filtration is big part of why customers, particularly allergy-sufferers, appreciate Miele vacuums. Their HEPA filters capture up to 99.99% of airborne particles down to .3 microns and are part of Miele’s sealed 12-step air filtration system.
With the average American working at least eight hours a day, your office may seem like a second home. That’s why for those of us with allergies and asthma, it’s just as important to keep our offices clean and allergen-free as it is our own homes. In honor of May being Allergy and Asthma Awareness Month, here are some tips to help employees and employers maintain a comfortable working environment for everyone, ensuring the best productivity possible.
- Clear the clutter: While stacks of paper may seem like the mark of a busy employee, they’re also a great way to collect dust and other particle irritants on your desk. Take some time each week to tidy up your desk area by removing or recycling unnecessary paperwork. Also, view and save documents on your computer and/or company’s shared space to reduce waste.
- Wash your dishes: Busy days are just a part of work life. Regardless of the length of your to-do list, remove dishes and food containers from your desk and wash them as soon as possible. Dirty dishes (especially your coffee cup!) and used food wrappers can be a breeding ground for mold and other allergens.
- Encourage a fragrance-free work environment: Fragrances from perfumes, hand lotions, cleaning products, and more can cause reactions like headaches, nausea, or even asthma attacks.
Growing up, my regular chore was to vacuum the house each afternoon during the week and twice on Saturdays (once in the morning before watching cartoons and once in the evening after dinner.) While this daily ritual instilled in me a love for clean floors, it also made me cringe at the thought of vacuuming. Naturally, when robotic vacuums became popular, I was eager to reap the rewards of clean floors without the hassle of pushing around a clunky vacuum—they literally do the work for you!
My enthusiasm for robotic vacuums waned because some of the most popular models turned out to be more like sweepers than vacuums and still carried a hefty price tag. Upon my introduction to the Neato Robotics vacuum line these feelings changed completely. Featuring innovative technology, a low-profile design, and affordable price tag, these robotic vacuums easily clean places that you may have trouble reaching with a regular-size vacuum. Plus, the powerful suction effectively captures dust, dirt, pet hair, and other debris from both soft and hard surfaces, including tile, vinyl, and hardwoods.

This flu season is shaping up to be one of the roughest in recent years. During a recent CDC Press Briefing on the rapid spread of influenza virus strains in the U.S., CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden pointed out that 47 states are currently reporting “widespread geographic influenza activity.” Additionally, Dr. Richard Besser, ABC Chief Health and Medical Director, warned in an interview that although flu activity seems to be decreasing in some states that were hit early on, such as those in the southern U.S., we could still be facing up to six more weeks of flu season. It’s no wonder that people are taking this year’s flu season seriously.
Beyond flu vaccinations, regular hand-washing, covering your cough and sneeze, and staying home when you feel sick, there are other flu prevention methods to give you the best chance of avoiding the illness this season.
Read on for our flu prevention tips.
