Today is officially the first day of spring! Winter weather is (finally) on its way out, and we’re making our spring cleaning checklists.
While you’re preparing your home and closet for warmer weather, be sure to consider these 10 spring cleaning tips:
Clean Based on Your Time Constraints
If you don’t have a lot of time, it’s best to complete one task at a time rather than trying to work on several things at once.
Handle smaller tasks like dusting when you can, and then tackle your closet when you have a little more time to do laundry, pack up your winter clothes, and pull out your shorts. Continue reading

The arrival of winter offers relief for many allergy sufferers, but setting up for the holidays can cause a host of issues for people with asthma and allergies. If the thought of Christmas brings images of festive trees and plants along with memories of sneezing and sniffling through the holidays, a few simple changes can make your holiday more enjoyable.
Here are some common triggers and how to avoid them this holiday season:
Don’t forget the decorations you love so much, the ones that give your home the holiday feel, they’ve been stored away for 11 or so months. And they’re generally kept in attics, basements, garages or other places that are known for harboring dust and mold. Wipe down seasonal ornaments and decorations with a damp cloth when you first dig them out. If you purchase live decorations or plants (more on trees below!), then be sure to toss them as soon as they start to dry out. Continue reading

While most people think of spring when discussing seasonal allergies, fall allergies can cause just as many problems. Allergies run rampant throughout this season, and when fall allergy symptoms are left untreated they can exacerbate a variety of other health issues. For those who are wondering how to avoid allergies this autumn, itchy eyes, runny noses, and headaches, here are some important tips to keep in mind.
When I think about fall allergies, the first thing that comes to mind are the weeds that creep up on my property. Even those with a well-maintained lawn or attractive garden may not realize just how many unwanted plants and other types of organic material will wreak havoc on their family’s allergies. When the seasons begin to change, it’s time to take a fresh look at preventative steps.
This includes cleansing your yard of outdoor allergens such as:
-Rain gutter debris

I was lucky enough to experience “Dyson at the Fox”, the company’s most interactive training yet. A few of us from Sylvane had the privilege to test drive several of their new and existing products. I learned a lot of cool stuff and found my new favorite product! Check out my photos from the training and see which products I was most impressed with below.

The Atlanta area has literally been flooded with rain recently. Typically our summers look a lot like Florida: Scorching hot during the day with a few pop up showers in the afternoon. Lately it has been more like “take cover because a long, torrential downpour is on the way.”
All the rain this past weekend left one furniture store with quite a mess! Their basement, which serves as warehouse space with lots of valuable pieces, was completely flooded when rain leaked into their basement. By the time the skies cleared nearly a foot of standing water was present in some areas.
Luckily, a few sturdy Sylvane products came to the rescue. In fact, the water damage was taken care of by the end of the weekend, so it didn’t influence business come Monday morning. One of our popular shop vacs removed a large amount of the water and debris, before a few industrial fans removed excess moisture in the floors, wood, and boxes.
If you’re ever in the same predicament, these products could save you a lot of hassle and money. Let’s take a look at what happened:

Is summer really almost over? If my morning commute was any indication, the answer is definitely yes. While the end of summer really only affects my commute and time spent at the pool, there are parents across the country sending kids off to college for the first time.
Described as “the best 4 years of your life,” college living situations (particularly old, dirty dorms) are generally less than ideal. I was in for quite a shock when I first walked into my dorm room–it was dusty, hot, and a far cry from the house I grew up in…and for better or worse, my college apartments never got much better.
So whether your child is off to college for the first time or heading back after summer, they’re probably entering a less-than-desirable living situation. Here are some must-have products to improve their air quality and keep them comfortable for the school year ahead.
The Eva-Dry E-100 is a unique disposable product that removes moisture and odors for up to 60 days. Its carbon and micro-absorbing crystals absorb moisture, musty odors, and allergens from closets, storage bins, and other small areas. They’re ideal for college students who don’t have easy access to laundry facilities and are living in small dorm rooms with poor air quality.
Even better, they fit into any college student’s budget since they cost around $20. In fact, the Eliminator buckets are on sale right now! Continue reading

Since I started at Sylvane, I’ve been touting the Miele Marin as one of my favorite vacuums. It’s super easy to move around and you can choose between 3 carpet tools–depending on your home’s floors. When one of my co-workers, Kari, bought a new house that needed a little extra cleaning, I suggested she try the Marin. She was nice enough to take some photos and report back on her experience with this S8 canister vacuum. Check out her pictures and thoughts below:

No matter how hard we try, we all contribute to air pollution. Air Quality Awareness Week highlights a few ways we can all help make our air cleaner–and recognize how air quality affects our overall health.
The EPA offers a few simple ways to get involved, and most involve reducing smog—one of the main ways we contribute to air pollution.
Give one or two of their suggestions a try–you may even start doing them regularly. Continue reading

If you have an air purifier, clean air is important to you. But maybe not so important that you feel compelled to buy new filters every 6 months, or whatever the manufacturer recommends. No big deal, right? It still cleans the air, doesn’t it? Continue reading

The other day I was vacuuming my daughter’s room when I noticed that my trusty Bissell Lift-Off Pet Vacuum was no longer suctioning up her dropped Cheerios. It was actually flinging them across the room with every sweep. It dawned on me then that it has been some time (a few years, in fact!) that I’ve actually performed any other recommended maintenance on my vacuum besides emptying the dust bin regularly. Clearly, it was time to show a little TLC to the big dusty thing.
My dusty yet trusty Bissell Lift-Off Multi-Cyclonic Pet Vacuum
And so for me, spring cleaning 2014 began with cleaning and servicing my number one cleaning tool. Here’s how I did it.

Two of my favorite things in life are cooking and spending time with my pets. Unfortunately (and despite my best efforts), they both can cause pretty pungent odors in my home. For years, plug-in and aerosol air fresheners were my go-to solution. But after a while I noticed these “fresh smells” often coincided with headaches and allergy flare-ups. I dug a little deeper and didn’t like what I read—luckily I found better ways to keep my home healthy and odor-free.

What’s on the inside matters most–that’s what I’ve always heard. Not that you would know it by looking at Dyson vacuums, which look more like gadgets than vacuum cleaners.
But when it came to creating the DC65 vacuums, an update to their popular DC41 line, Dyson focused on what’s inside their vacuums. So even though they look like past models, they’re even better than ever. Want more good news? We’re offering 20% off all Dyson models during our vacuum sale (using discount code DYSON20)—including the new DC65 models.
Let’s compare their 3 new models and check out what improvements have been made. More information on our vacuum sale can also be found below, which includes 10% off various other vacuum cleaner brands.
