How to Make Quick Work of a Flooded Warehouse

Posted by Tony on August 12th, 2014

new-429-large_size_image-dri-eaz-sahara-pro-daisy-chainThe Atlanta area has literally been flooded with rain recently. Typically our summers look a lot like Florida: Scorching hot during the day with a few pop up showers in the afternoon. Lately it has been more like “take cover because a long, torrential downpour is on the way.”

All the rain this past weekend left one furniture store with quite a mess! Their basement, which serves as warehouse space with lots of valuable pieces, was completely flooded when rain leaked into their basement. By the time the skies cleared nearly a foot of standing water was present in some areas.

Luckily, a few sturdy Sylvane products came to the rescue. In fact, the water damage was taken care of by the end of the weekend, so it didn’t influence business come Monday morning. One of our popular shop vacs removed a large amount of the water and debris, before a few industrial fans removed excess moisture in the floors, wood, and boxes.

If you’re ever in the same predicament, these products could save you a lot of hassle and money. Let’s take a look at what happened:

Must-Haves For a Healthy, Clean Dorm Room

Posted by Tony on August 5th, 2014

collegeIs summer really almost over? If my morning commute was any indication, the answer is definitely yes. While the end of summer really only affects my commute and time spent at the pool, there are parents across the country sending kids off to college for the first time.

Described as “the best 4 years of your life,” college living situations (particularly old, dirty dorms) are generally less than ideal. I was in for quite a shock when I first walked into my dorm room–it was dusty, hot, and a far cry from the house I grew up in…and for better or worse, my college apartments never got much better.

So whether your child is off to college for the first time or heading back after summer, they’re probably entering a less-than-desirable living situation. Here are some must-have products to improve their air quality and keep them comfortable for the school year ahead.

Eva-Dry E-100 Eliminator Buckets

eva-dry-e-100-eliminator-bucketsThe Eva-Dry E-100 is a unique disposable product that removes moisture and odors for up to 60 days. Its carbon and micro-absorbing crystals absorb moisture, musty odors, and allergens from closets, storage bins, and other small areas. They’re ideal for college students who don’t have easy access to laundry facilities and are living in small dorm rooms with poor air quality.

Even better, they fit into any college student’s budget since they cost around $20. In fact, the Eliminator buckets are on sale right now! See more dorm room must-haves!

Miele Marin Product Review: A New Way to Vacuum

Posted by Tony on July 21st, 2014

marin-review-imageSince I started at Sylvane, I’ve been touting the Miele Marin as one of my favorite vacuums. It’s super easy to move around and you can choose between 3 carpet tools–depending on your home’s floors. When one of my co-workers, Kari, bought a new house that needed a little extra cleaning, I suggested she try the Marin. She was nice enough to take some photos and report back on her experience with this S8 canister vacuum. Check out her pictures and thoughts below:

How To Clean Your Bissell Bagless Vacuum

Posted by Ashley on March 27th, 2014

The other day I was vacuuming my daughter’s room when I noticed that my trusty Bissell Lift-Off Pet Vacuum was no longer suctioning up her dropped Cheerios. It was actually flinging them across the room with every sweep. It dawned on me then that it has been some time (a few years, in fact!) that I’ve actually performed any other recommended maintenance on my vacuum besides emptying the dust bin regularly. Clearly, it was time to show a little TLC to the big dusty thing.

Chemical Air Freshening: Pleasant Smells, Harmful Side Effects

Posted by Ivey on March 19th, 2014

96513194Two of my favorite things in life are cooking and spending time with my pets. Unfortunately (and despite my best efforts), they both can cause pretty pungent odors in my home. For years, plug-in and aerosol air fresheners were my go-to solution. But after a while I noticed these “fresh smells” often coincided with headaches and allergy flare-ups. I dug a little deeper and didn’t like what I read—luckily I found better ways to keep my home healthy and odor-free.

Celebrate Allergy and Asthma Awareness Month with a Clean Office Space

Posted by Ivey on May 14th, 2013

Desk filled with paperWith the average American working at least eight hours a day, your office may seem like a second home. That’s why for those of us with allergies and asthma, it’s just as important to keep our offices clean and allergen-free as it is our own homes. In honor of May being Allergy and Asthma Awareness Month, here are some tips to help employees and employers maintain a comfortable working environment for everyone, ensuring the best productivity possible.

  • Clear the clutter: While stacks of paper may seem like the mark of a busy employee, they’re also a great way to collect dust and other particle irritants on your desk. Take some time each week to tidy up your desk area by removing or recycling unnecessary paperwork. Also, view and save documents on your computer and/or company’s shared space to reduce waste.
  • Wash your dishes: Busy days are just a part of work life. Regardless of the lengthWashing dishes of your to-do list, remove dishes and food containers from your desk and wash them as soon as possible. Dirty dishes (especially your coffee cup!) and used food wrappers can be a breeding ground for mold and other allergens.
  • Encourage a fragrance-free work environment: Fragrances from perfumes, hand lotions, cleaning products, and more can cause reactions like headaches, nausea, or even asthma attacks.

Vacuuming like Judy Jetson

Posted by Ivey on April 1st, 2013

Neato Robotics XV-21 VacuumGrowing up, my regular chore was to vacuum the house each afternoon during the week and twice on Saturdays (once in the morning before watching cartoons and once in the evening after dinner.) While this daily ritual instilled in me a love for clean floors, it also made me cringe at the thought of vacuuming. Naturally, when robotic vacuums became popular, I was eager to reap the rewards of clean floors without the hassle of pushing around a clunky vacuum—they literally do the work for you!

My enthusiasm for robotic vacuums waned because some of the most popular models turned out to be more like sweepers than vacuums and still carried a hefty price tag. Upon my introduction to the Neato Robotics vacuum line these feelings changed completely. Featuring innovative technology, a low-profile design, and affordable price tag, these robotic vacuums easily clean places that you may have trouble reaching with a regular-size vacuum. Plus, the powerful suction effectively captures dust, dirt, pet hair, and other debris from both soft and hard surfaces, including tile, vinyl, and hardwoods.
