Dyson recently announced a voluntary recall on their popular AM04 and AM05 heater fans. The recall announcement came after 4 products created “contained” fires, reportedly started by internal burn-outs in the heating element.
For more information or to register your Dyson AM04 or AM05 for the recall, visit the Dyson Recall Site.
An innovator in home appliances, Dyson first introduced their fans in 2009 and released the heater version in 2011. These unique fans and heater fans use air multiplier technology instead of traditional fan blades. Dyson’s standard fans (without heat) aren’t affected by the recall since they don’t include the heating element.
Dyson suggests all owners of AM04 and AM05 models visit their recall site to get the ball rolling and receive directions on how to proceed. They’re releasing new information soon, so check back here or visit their recall site for more information. You can also contact Dyson’s helpline at 1-866-297-5303.

We’ve been saying it for a while now: This has been a crazy winter. Little did we know just how crazy it would get here in Atlanta! On Tuesday all hell broke loose and the term “Snowpocolypse” was unavoidable. After a few inches of ice caused a full-blown city shutdown, the dust (or ice?) has finally settled.
The political and economic consequences are still the talk-of-the-town, but this storm proved one thing: With Mother Nature, you really just never know. I’ll leave the political conversation to Mayor Kasim Reed and the various news outlets asking the tough questions. But as some people are just getting home after 48+ hours away from their families, let’s take a look back at the craziness: Continue reading

When the frigid weather, compliments of a polar vortex, rolled in, I was in a mountain cabin and terrified. That’s right, terrified. This Southern girl wanted to get away from the cold, wind, and snowfall as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, when I arrived home to my beloved bungalow, I had more winter weather worries. While my home has endless amounts of character and charm, it can often be short on warmth during the winter.

Regardless of where you are in the country, you’re probably pretty cold at this point. Very few of us here in Atlanta were prepared for the 6 degree temperature we woke up to earlier this week. On top of that, the central heat in our office is having major issues, leaving us less than toasty at our desks. Luckily, we have a warehouse full of heaters onsite.
We scattered a few space heaters around the coldest parts of the office, and good news: They really helped! Check out how we used different heaters and my suggestions based on our experience. You may want to consider getting one—as we learned, you never know when a crazy cold front (or the Polar Vortex) will wreak havoc on your day.
For Offices or Small Conference Rooms
Our offices and conference rooms got the coldest—being cut off from the rest of the office space and full of windows, they were pretty frigid. We used the Vornado Touchstone Vortex Heater in a small conference room and a few offices. This one impressed me a lot because its fan really pushed warm air around the space. Capable of heating rooms up to 16 X 16 feet, it also comes with tons of cool features. A thermostatic remote control actually senses the temperature around it to ensure an even room temperature is maintained. You can also set your exact room temperature with this one (while a lot of space heaters only let you pick a low or high heat setting). The Vortex TVH-600 also has a programmable timer, an LCD screen, and various safety features.

Baby, it’s cold outside! Coast to coast in the U.S., the last month of 2013 has brought with it snow, ice, and record lows. Needless to say, most of us are searching for ways to stay warm and comfortable despite the frigid temperatures. While we often turn to traditional space heaters for our supplemental heating needs, many people (myself included!) are looking for a heater that doesn’t just warm the room, but looks good doing it. Enter electric fireplaces. These attractive heaters quickly become a focal point in foyers, offices, bedrooms, and living rooms alike.
And let’s face it, nothing defines cozy winter nights like the iconic look of a fireplace and warm fire. Of course, fewer home additions can be more aggravating than a traditional fireplace. Between purchasing (or chopping) wood, cleaning/maintenance, and carbon monoxide emissions, there’s a lot of hassle for a little ambiance. That’s why electric fireplaces are such a hit! They blend the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of a space heater with the charm of a traditional fireplace—without the hassle. Typically requiring just a standard outlet, these fireplaces can be plugged in just about anywhere. Thanks to improved technology, they offer extremely realistic flames, simple operation, and tons of safety features.

Winter doesn’t officially start for another 5 weeks, but freezing weather came earlier than expected thanks to an arctic blast that hit the south and northeast over the last few days. People from Florida to DC and even Texas saw temperatures drop from fair to freezing in a matter of hours. As discussed on the various news channels (including CBS) this week, experts say this may be the start of a very long winter. These unusually cold temperatures are affecting millions of people across the country and have many worried about what lies ahead.
The current blast is producing record-breaking lows and freezing weather that residents haven’t seen (or prepared for) in quite some time. Considering these unpredictable weather patterns, it may be time to prepare for the cold winter ahead. Central heating systems are great, but when temperatures drop drastically with no warning, it’s a good idea to have a space heater available for quick, directed heat in specific rooms. Most of these inexpensive heaters are about as efficient as you can get–and can help save you money by keeping your thermostat at a lower temperature.
Whether you’re looking for a compact heater to place on your floor, a tabletop heater, or a heater that hangs from your wall, we have a variety of options for any room in your home. Here are a few good heater options depending on your needs:
- Convection Heaters: Looking to warm an entire room? Then a convection heater is definitely one to check out. Generally aided by fans, these heaters spread warmth across your room and are generally compact enough to move from room to room. So you can keep it in your bedroom when you sleep and then move it to your living room while you’re watching TV.
- Infrared Heaters: Consider an infrared heater if you need direct heat to objects in your space. They’re common for people looking to heat themselves and other direct objects–not necessarily an entire room. Just target yours right where you need it, and enjoy the warmth instantly.
- Garage Heaters: Working in garages when it’s frigidly cold outside sounds like a ton of fun, right? Probably not. Glance over our selection of garage and workshop heaters to see if any of them can help you out this winter. With rugged exteriors and powerful heating capabilities, they can withstand the tough conditions in your garage–and you will too!
Regardless of how you do it, do your best to get through the crazy weather patterns hitting the United States. Have you noticed any surprisingly low temperatures in your areas? Have any suggestions to deal with it? Let us know in the comments below!

Although it took a while to feel like winter in many parts of the country, there’s no doubt that cold weather has arrived. As we start turning on our furnaces and space heaters, there are a few things to keep in mind. An overload of dust can be dispersed by running your furnace, especially for the first time. Help keep your air clean and fresh (and lower your risk of feeling bad around the holidays) by completing a few small tasks around your house.
When you turn on your furnace for the first time each year, you might notice a “burnt dust” smell in the air—I know I did! During warmer months, your heating ducts accumulate a lot of dust and other allergens. When it’s time to turn it back on, your home is flooded with all that has accumulated over the last year, which can lead to allergies and other respiratory issues.
It may not seem like a huge deal, but the dust and other particles floating around can also compromise your immune system. If your body is busy fighting off the impurities in your air, you’re more vulnerable to other infections like the common cold or flu.
Fortunately there are a couple of ways you can diminish this problem:
- Use air filters to catch the dust and debris. Clean permanent filters and use HEPA filters to catch as many unwanted allergens as possible.
- Install eco friendly heaters that don’t spread as much dust and allergens into the air.
- Have your heating ducts cleaned regularly, especially just before you fire them up for the year.
- Use a humidifier if your air is dry. Dry air can irritate your sinuses and cause sore throats, so make sure your humidity is between 35% and 50%.
The best way to improve your indoor air while running your furnace or heater is to use all of these strategies. The bottom line is that it’s not the air that’s bad for you; it’s the dust and allergens that accumulate when your heater’s not in use. Be sure to have adequate filtration and cleaning processes, so you can enjoy a warm home without some of these nasty side effects.
I’ve been running my heat for more than two months now (I live in North Dakota)! When did you decide it was time to kick on the furnace?

The leaves just started changing, but cooler weather is on its way—and in some places, it’s already here. High electricity costs and expensive, outdated heating systems can waste a lot of money this winter. Combine that with consumers’ desire to only heat specific rooms (the ones they actually use!), and it’s pretty clear why space heaters have become so popular across the country.
A space heater can save you money, energy, and provide spot heating to any area of your home. With a wide-range of heater types, capacities, and safety features, finding the right space heater is easier than you may think.
It’s a great time to buy one too, because many of our most popular models are 20% off during Sylvane’s Space Heater Sale going on now. Continue reading
