We’ve moved on from the dancing sharks (who stole the Super Bowl halftime show) and focused our attention on another animal friend: Punxsutawney Phil, the world’s most famous groundhog.
Each year on February 2nd, people show up bright and early to learn if Phil sees his shadow. If he does, then prepare for 6 more weeks of winter. If not, spring is around the corner.
Not surprisingly, our favorite groundhog did see his shadow. So it looks like we’re in for 6 more weeks of winter. But let’s be honest, is anyone surprised? Phil could have saved himself some time and just watched the Weather Channel.
Winter Storm Linus is crushing Chicago just days after Boston survived one of the biggest snowstorm’s in its long history.
And even though Groundhog Day is a cheeky holiday, I think it’s a safe bet this time. Stay safe if you’re traveling, and do your best to keep warm at home. Continue reading

A new wave of winter weather is hitting us again, particularly in the Northeast. The freezing temperatures and snow have people hunkering down at home. If you’re worried about staying warm, remember that space heaters are inexpensive, easy ways to add warmth to rooms. Before buying the first one you see online, there are a few space heater safety tips to keep in mind.
Shopping for Safe Space Heaters
Space heater safety begins by choosing the right type of heater for your application. Electric heaters are the only heaters considered safe for use inside non-vented rooms. Fortunately, a wide array of safe space heaters fall within this general category, from convection heaters that circulate warmth around a room to radiant heaters that direct warmth right at you. Check out all the different types of space heater technology here.
Safety Features to Consider
Many space heaters come with an auto shut-off feature that switches the heater off immediately in the unlikely event that it overheats. To avoid fire hazards, the U.S. Fire Administration recommends purchasing a space heater with a tip-over safety switch too. The agency also advises consumers to make sure that the heater has been evaluated by a third-party organization like Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
Another consideration, particularly if you have kids or pets, is cool-touch housing. You won’t have to worry about wandering fingers or your dog getting burned when brushing up against it. Continue reading

Winter is admittedly not my favorite time of year: While I love cuddling up on the couch on a cold night, I don’t love the spike in energy bills I see when I run my central heater.
I’ve become a huge fan of space heaters since I joined Sylvane. They’re inexpensive, easy-to-move, and give off targeted warmth where you really need it. I tend to turn my thermostat down and use a good space heater in my living room (and then my bedroom at night). This plan actually keeps me warmer and saves me some money too.
A top consumer reporting agency just released its top picks for single-room heaters. Lets take a look at why these models ranked so highly and who should consider adding one to their home:

I was lucky enough to experience “Dyson at the Fox”, the company’s most interactive training yet. A few of us from Sylvane had the privilege to test drive several of their new and existing products. I learned a lot of cool stuff and found my new favorite product! Check out my photos from the training and see which products I was most impressed with below.

As a native southerner, I often say I’m allergic to the cold. Until recently, I had no idea this was not only an actual condition, but one with life-threatening consequences. After learning about Cara Yacino’s journey to a cold urticaria diagnosis and the precautions she takes to control her risk of an allergic reaction, I’ll think twice before carelessly claiming a cold allergy.
According to the Weather Channel’s video that chronicles her allergy (below), Yacino began experiencing hives that she originally thought were due to a food allergy. The initial outbreak occurred while she was drinking a cold coffee drink. However, the hives manifested once more when Yacino put her hand in a cold shark and ray petting tank. Continue reading

Regardless of where you are in the country, you’re probably pretty cold at this point. Very few of us here in Atlanta were prepared for the 6 degree temperature we woke up to earlier this week. On top of that, the central heat in our office is having major issues, leaving us less than toasty at our desks. Luckily, we have a warehouse full of heaters onsite.
We scattered a few space heaters around the coldest parts of the office, and good news: They really helped! Check out how we used different heaters and my suggestions based on our experience. You may want to consider getting one—as we learned, you never know when a crazy cold front (or the Polar Vortex) will wreak havoc on your day.
For Offices or Small Conference Rooms
Our offices and conference rooms got the coldest—being cut off from the rest of the office space and full of windows, they were pretty frigid. We used the Vornado Touchstone Vortex Heater in a small conference room and a few offices. This one impressed me a lot because its fan really pushed warm air around the space. Capable of heating rooms up to 16 X 16 feet, it also comes with tons of cool features. A thermostatic remote control actually senses the temperature around it to ensure an even room temperature is maintained. You can also set your exact room temperature with this one (while a lot of space heaters only let you pick a low or high heat setting). The Vortex TVH-600 also has a programmable timer, an LCD screen, and various safety features.
