Growing up, my regular chore was to vacuum the house each afternoon during the week and twice on Saturdays (once in the morning before watching cartoons and once in the evening after dinner.) While this daily ritual instilled in me a love for clean floors, it also made me cringe at the thought of vacuuming. Naturally, when robotic vacuums became popular, I was eager to reap the rewards of clean floors without the hassle of pushing around a clunky vacuum—they literally do the work for you!
My enthusiasm for robotic vacuums waned because some of the most popular models turned out to be more like sweepers than vacuums and still carried a hefty price tag. Upon my introduction to the Neato Robotics vacuum line these feelings changed completely. Featuring innovative technology, a low-profile design, and affordable price tag, these robotic vacuums easily clean places that you may have trouble reaching with a regular-size vacuum. Plus, the powerful suction effectively captures dust, dirt, pet hair, and other debris from both soft and hard surfaces, including tile, vinyl, and hardwoods.

A cleaning revolution may sound a bit dramatic, but it’s exactly what Miele has created. Their new S8 line of canister vacuums are packed with extras and leading the charge in changing how we clean our homes.
I was lucky enough to chat with a Miele rep about these “next generation” vacuums. I really only had 2 questions: What makes one S8 model different from the others? And who should buy each one? I’ll share what I learned, but let’s run through the premium features they all share first. These vacuums filter air better than most canister vacuums, and they’re the lightest and quietest vacuums Miele has ever created. All Miele S8 vacuums include:
- Parquet Twister Floor Tool: All S8 models come with this floor tool, which is air-driven and perfect for smooth floors.
- AirClean Sealed System: It’s one thing to vacuum up dust, allergens, and other particles, but this sealed system ensures it stays in the vacuum’s bag and out of your indoor environment.
- One-Touch Controls: No wrapping a cord, holding down a button, or even bending over. Simply touch a button with your foot to rewind the cord automatically or turn the vacuum on and off.
- 6 Suction Settings: Different surfaces have various heights and textures; these settings let you control how much suction you use. For example, you’d use much more suction on high-pile carpet than when cleaning upholstery.
- Onboard Accessories: Easy to find and store, use these for cleaning furniture, upholstery, and various other areas of your home. Continue reading

This past month of May was truly one of excitement in the halls of Sylvane as we prepared for not one, but two major brands to join our online catalog. I told you about our first major addition, Miele vacuums, last week. (Be sure to check out my blog Introducing Miele Vacuums if you missed it!) This week, feast your eyes on the latest brand to join our vacuum and fan categories—UK-based Dyson!
You’ve probably seen Dyson products at your local big-box store. The high-tech, ball-bearing upright Dyson vacuums never fail to catch my eye on my shopping trips and get me dreaming of an easier way to clean. More recently, you’ve likely also encountered the swanky bladeless Dyson air multipliers on the shelves just in time for summer. While big-box stores are known for their sometimes unbeatable deals and upper hand in convenience, one thing they often lack is variety.

Many of us at Sylvane have been abuzz for the past few weeks, prepping to roll out the newest vacuum brand to join our product catalog. This new addition couldn’t have come at a better time since we are deep in the throes of spring cleaning season, not to mention a pretty trying allergy season. (Have you seen those pollen counts?) So, what better to tackle all that dirt and debris in your home and help remove symptom-triggering allergens than a powerful Miele vacuum?
That’s right. Miele, the family-owned and operated German manufacturer of state-of-the-art home appliances—including an award-winning line of vacuum cleaners—has arrived at Sylvane!

With a home occupied by two dogs, carpet, and loads of potential allergy triggers, I am always on the lookout for a great vacuum. For their March issue, Consumer Reports tested and rated 67 different vacuum cleaners. Two upright vacuum cleaners offered by Sylvane were chosen as CR Best Buys and an Electrolux canister vacuum ranked among the top five for canister vacuum cleaners.
Vacuums were compared and ranked among similar models based on price, weight, replacement bag costs, and overall score. The ratings also figured in test results based on carpet cleaning, bare floor cleaning, total airflow, noise, emissions, handling, and pet hair removal.

Finding ways to protect and preserve our environment seems to be on everyone’s minds these days. So, if you’re searching for new ideas to add to your green routine or just feel like you aren’t doing enough, check out the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Pick 5 for the Environment program.
Pick 5 encourages people to commit to five actions that promote conservation of the environment. The EPA provides a list of ten actions to help you choose your five. These actions range from using less water to eCycling. If after scanning the list, you’re still feeling stumped, Sylvane can help. Here are a few suggestions that help conserve the outdoor environment by treating problems in your indoor environment.

Cockroaches. They’re creepy, crawly — and a leading cause of allergies and asthma!
Cockroach allergens are found in the feces, saliva, and body parts of the insects. They cause allergy symptoms, such as irritated skin, itchy eyes and nose, scratchy throat, and can exacerbate asthma conditions. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, there is a correlation between exposure to cockroach allergens and the development of asthma in children.
