I bought the Comfort-Aire BHD-501-G Dehumidifier for my basement because my new roommate said his sofa pillows and sheets felt damp and there was a musty smell in some areas. Even though we live in Colorado, we'd been having a lot of rain and the humidity was much higher than usual. After reading a lot of glowing reviews and making sure the unit included a humidity readout and control setting, I ordered the Comfort-Aire from Sylvane. They had the best price and free shipping.

I was very pleased to find that it works as well as I'd read in the reviews. It was shipped quickly and arrived in excellent condition. It was easy to set up and within two hours the humidity had gone from 75% to 60%. My roommate stopped in and was quite pleased at how dry and warm the basement felt and how much better it smelled already. A few hours later the humidity was down to 52%. The bucket was filled and emptied three or four times within the first 24 hours. The basement is about 900 square feet and this little unit can cover large areas. We moved it from room to room at the beginning and now it runs for a few hours every day on the lower speed with the humidity set at 45%. Everything stays dry and warm and the musty smell is gone. The bucket holds a lot and only has to be emptied once a day. The only recommendation that I would make is for a spout or better pouring edge on the bucket so it's easier to empty without making a mess. Also, it does increase the basement temperature quite a bit, but my roommate much prefers warm and dry to cold and damp so it's not a problem.

I am very happy with this product and glad I bought the smaller unit because it's been getting the job done. I would definitely recommend it.

The dehumidifier lasted less than 2 years. Tech support referred me to one of their repair facilities. The repair facility charged me $35 to check it and then told me I shouldn't have wasted my time bringing it in. Their opinion of tech support was very low. These units have been known for their breakdowns

Comments about Comfort-Aire BHD-501-H Dehumidifier:

Very satisfied with product. Easy setup. Worked better than any other dehumidifier I have purchased that was rated at 50 pints per day. Quiet operation. although I have it in the basement, it's appearance allows you to put it anywhere. The product was purchased at Sylvane. Fast delivery. Very good purchase experience.

Comments about Comfort-Aire BHD-501-H Dehumidifier:

I have another older model Comfort-Aire which is why I purchased a new one to supplement the dehumidification in a very large and segmented basement area. The unit is very well constructed and easy to use. One thing that the product description does not mention, is that the fan runs all the time whether the compressor is running or not. In my opinion this is a waste of energy. The unit should be modified to run the fan only when the compressor is removing humidity. The older model units (2 years older) fan does not run constantly.
I returned the unit due to that fact only. Sylvane's return policy was easy, quick, and very customer service friendly. I would definitely deal with Sylvane for my next purchase of equipment.

decent for the money

Comments about Comfort-Aire BHD-501-H Dehumidifier:

It works, but the major downsides are noise and heat output. On the noise side, the plastic casing is thin, the blower motor seems to be out of alignment, and there is excessive gap at the seams--all of which translates into excessive resonance from the motor and compressor. The unit arrived with the upper-right corner cracked--while cosmetic, a reminder of the thin casing. As for the heat, I find that my A/C needs to run more frequently because of this unit, which translates into a negative power savings. Not recommended.

Comfort-Aire BHD-501-G

Comments about Comfort-Aire BHD-501-H Dehumidifier:

Based on a rather significant number of portable so-called low-temperature basement dehumidifiers I have owned and which have failed, I was a bit skeptical of the quality and performance of any portable dehumidifier. I am skeptical no more. The Comfort-Aire BHD-501-G is far quieter than any portable unit I have had, and it truely functions well in low temperatures.

I like my basement humidity at 40% and the BHD-501-G maintained it within 5%, as expected. My basement temperature was 55 degrees when I first started the unit and it worked perfectly. It cycles between dehumidifying and defrosting as it should to avoid damaging itself, and the display indicates defrost mode when in that mode. The higher the basement temperature, the less time it spends in defrost mode.

I have had the unit only for a short time so I can not comment on long term performance or quality, but if it continues to perform at the standard it has set for itself at initial deployment, it will continue to be the best portable low-temperature basement dehumidifier I have ever owned.

Comments about Comfort-Aire BHD-501-H Dehumidifier:

We are very pleased with the unit. It's quite and works well. We have a carpeted, finished basement. The bucket is very well made. It has a large capacity, and a nicely designed and strong handle. We Recommend this unit.

Comfort-Aire

Comments about Comfort-Aire BHD-501-H Dehumidifier:

I had a sears dehumidifier which died after 2 years. The Comfort-Aire is quieter and more efficient. After the second day, I noticed a big difference in the basement air quality. The smell and dampness is gone. I would definitely recommend it. I searched the internet and Sylvane had the prices and excellent service. I was plesently surprised how fast I received the dehumidifier.
