Humidity in your home or office—the result of excessive moisture in the air—can lead to musty odors, mold, mildew, and even structural damage. The result is a harmful indoor environment that can cause discomfort and trigger allergy symptoms. When excessive moisture is your problem, an effective residential dehumidifier is the answer. The BHD-651 is the best dehumidifier for those who:
Nothing says convenience like automatic enhancements that practically do the work for you. Intelligently designed with the capability to operate independently, these safety features function to protect you and your home and help to extend the life of your BHD-651-G dehumidifier:
Auto Defrost
Frost can begin to build up on the evaporator coils of your dehumidifier when operating in low temperatures. This can eventually damage the dehumidifier. However, Comfort-Aire's auto defrost feature cycles the compressor on and off and operate the fan until the frost disappears, shielding the dehumidifier from potential damage.
Indicator Lights
LED indicator lights—including a check-filter indicator, which illuminates when it is time to clean the filter; and the bucket-full indicator, which notifies you when the condensate drainage bucket is full—ensure that your Comfort-Aire dehumidifier is performing in optimum efficiency.
Auto Shut-Off
When water fills the condensate container, an indicator light on the electronic panel will signal that the bucket is full. The dehumidifier will shut off automatically and resume operation when the bucket is emptied.
3-Minute Compressor Time Delay
To protect the compressor, a 3-minute delay prevents the dehumidifier from starting prematurely. During a time delay, the dehumidifier cannot restart within the first 3 minutes after it has stopped. This function also protects your compressor from being abruptly stopped, which may cause internal damage. The BHD-651 dehumidifier only stops immediately due to frost buildup, a full condensate bucket, or power failure.
Auto Restart
In the event that a power outage occurs in your home or office, the auto restart feature will automatically resume the dehumidifier's operation. Once the power is restored, the dehumidifier will restart in the last setting used.
During the dehumidification process, excess water that accumulates is either collected in the Comfort-Aire BHD-651-G's convenient front-loading water bucket or can be automatically emptied using a drainage hose (not included). To remove the excess water manually, use the built-in carrying handle to lift the bucket and simply empty the water when the bucket-full indicator light glows. To set up continuous drainage, attach a drainage hose to the dehumidifier using the included adapter. You can use a standard garden hose or a dehumidifier drainage hose that can be purchased inexpensively at home improvement stores. This allows you to continuously drain collected water into a convenient location, such as a nearby drain.
If water needs to be pumped up vertically for removal, such as when the system is placed in a basement, the Comfort-Aire BHD-651 can also be used with an optional condensate pump. Easy to install, this condensate pump accessory (sold separately) provides up to 15 feet of vertical lift and comes with 20 feet of flexible drainage tubing.
This Comfort-Aire dehumidifier comes loaded with a digital control panel with straightforward touch buttons. These easy-to-use controls, located on top of the dehumidifier for easy accessibility, make operating the unit effortless. With the simple press of a button you can program your portable dehumidifier for continuous operation, switch to a higher fan speed, set the programmable timer, and adjust the setting to your ideal humidity level. In addition, the digital control pad always displays an accurate humidity level in your space within a range of 30 percent relative humidity (RH) to 90 percent RH.

After 3 weeks, the Comfort-Aire 651 is doing what it is supposed to do in the basement - keeping it around 40-45% humidity vs. the 55%+ previously. I like the hose drain - it has a nipple that a tube can connect to and empties into the floor drain. I purchased 13' of 1/2 inch tubing and went straight to the drain nipple through the back opening instead of using the 8" piece that came with it and then having to connect a water hose. I would suggest this approach for those willing to purchase another $6 of tube. Only concern at this point is the unit seems to be in defrost mode frequently when I check on it. Not sure if this is of concern yet as to the life-expectancy of the unit. Sylvane did a good job shipping the unit quickly and it was well packaged to ensure no damage.

I bought this unit based on reader reviews even though it is a somewhat pricey dehumidifier.
The last dehumidifier I bought only lasted two or three years so decided to try a more expensive one in the hope it would last longer.
While this unit does lower the humidity in my basement to the desired level and maintain it there; the anti-freeze function does not seem to work properly.
The tempature in my basement throughout the summer was 75 to 80 degrees farenheit yet this unit was constantly going into "thaw out" mode.
It works well besides that; although it spends a LOT of time with the compressor off and the fan on high to de-thaw the non-frozen device.

Comments about Comfort-Aire BHD-651-G Dehumidifier:
We use the product in our basement, where we had problems with buckling floors before the use of dehumidifiers. We need it in the summers, when the air is humid, whereas it usually does not need to run in our dry winters.
So far, the product works well and keeps the humidity at the desired level. One feature I really like is the display of the current humidity. Emptying the bucket manually is fairly easy, and it is convenient that there are not any cover-parts that obstruct the water when pouring it out (had that problem with previous products).
The only disadvantage I discovered so far is that it increases the temperature in the room when it is running frequently, thus I took one star away in the rating.
This is our third dehumidifier in our house in 6 1/2 years and so far it worked well through the first summer. However, so did our previous ones - the problems usually come after 2-3 years. So I hope it will not fail us as quickly as our previous ones.
