Danby DDR4588EE Dehumidifier
Reviewed by: Johnny on 2008-10-29
I ordered the Danby DDR4588EE Dehumidifier because Danby was one of the better-rated dehumidifier in Consumer Reports. However the specific model was discontinued and the replacement model appears to be “back ordered” on all sites. Reading multiple reviews of other brands, which were priced pretty much similarly depending on capacity, I took a chance and decided on this model.
Sylvane web address was one that consistently comes up with Google inquiry. Sylvane’s site was easy to maneuver, availability was clearly labeled, and shipping was free. Some sites may be cheaper by $20 but they charge this on the back end in the form of shipping/handling. Usually ending up more than Sylvane’s. With Sylvane’s there were no surprises. Before executing the order, I checked “resellerratings.com” to make sure I’m not dealing with an irreputable site. It had a lifetime score of 7.5 out of 10 with mostly satisfied customers.
After completing the order, I received 4 e-mails. On the day of the order, the first one was to acknowledge receipt of the order. The 2nd one was the invoice. The day after the order, the 3rd e-mail notified me of approval (credit card) and soon after, the 4th followed with sent notification and tracking number. In my experience of ordering goods through the web, I have received the most notifications from Sylvane. An exemplary service compared to other sites. Ordering from other sites, sometimes I feel the ordered was dispatched to the black hole.
I usually have reservations regarding goods shipped through UPS ground. It is not uncommon that a square box becomes a round box by the time it was delivered. I was therefore pleasantly surprised that the dehumidifier came within a box cushioned by bubble wrap. The bubble wrap covered 3 sides out of 6 (top and 2 sides). The packaging could have been more optimal if the bubble wrap actually covered all 6 sides. Nevertheless, the dehumidifier was cocooned within the original package with styrofoam all around.
As for the dehumidifier itself, it worked flawlessly. It replaced a similar capacity Whirlpool brand that I inherited from the homeowner I bought my house from. It is quieter and better built. Instead of dials, it has touch pad controls. The water collection bin is not as easy to push back in. Tolerance is tight. It has to be aligned with the upper discharge tube on the right and the grooves on the bottom. I set the humidity level to the lowest it will go (35%). When I turned it off to empty the bin and turn it back on to resume operation, it always defaults back to 50%. It would be nicer if it stays put at the same setting until changed.
One surprise I encountered while emptying the water bin: with the machine off and the bin extracted, the fan will start and soon after the discharge tube will drip water. If one does not want any water on your carpeted floor, be prepared to put a small cup or rag to catch the water.
Conclusion: 5 star for Sylvane and 4 star for Danby
