I purchsed the product as a replacement. We have an unfinished block wall basement which gets very damp in the summer. The previous unit ran constantly and not very efficient. The Danby dehumidifier is great. The unit is attractive, streamline and could be used anywhere. Shipping was super, from GA. to PA. in two days. The unit was packed very well for shipment and ready to use out of the box. Setup of the unit was simple, remove from shipping carton, remove the protective tape (used for shipping) from the unit, put the batteries in the remote, plug the unit into a wall outlet, set the desired humidity level, place the enclosed hose in to a floor drain and that is it. If you do not have a floor drain there is a self contained reservoir which has an automatic shutoff when the container is full. The Danby has the energy saving feature, operates quietly. When I first installed the unit the humidity in the basement was 77%. I set the unit at 55% humidity and within one day the humidity was at the desired level. Another feature of the unit is after you set the unit for the desired humidity level after 5 seconds it desplays the actual humidity level in the room, so at all times you can see what the actual humidity level is in the room. This model dehumidifier can remove 50 pints of moisture in a twenty four hour period. The basement in which I have placed the unit is approx. 30' x 40' with 8' ceiling. This is a midsize unit and can handle the average room quite easily. Danby also sells a larger unit and also one which is for smaller spaces. Whatever the need I believe Danby has a dehumidifier for most applications and the service from Sylvane is exceptional. I am well pleased with my purchse and believe I received an excellent product for the price.

UNIT NEVER SHUTS OFF RUNS EVEN WHEN COMPRESSOR IS OFF I BELIEVE THIS IS AN ENERGY WASTER. ONLY SOLUTION IS TO HAVE THE UNIT SHUT ON AND OFF WHILE CONNECTED TO AN EXTERNAL TIMER WHICH IS AN EXTRA COST IN ITSELF THEN ADD THE RUN TIME AND THERE YOU HAVE IT.

Danby Dehumidifier DDR5009REE

Comments about Danby DDR5009REE Dehumidifier:

Lightweight and easy to maneuver. I originally had it too close to the furnace which caused it not to draw water. Contacted customer service and they gave me Danby's direct line. They explained in detail the problem. Moved it further away from furnace and works great. Quiet unit. Did not know that the fan runs all the time. It's part of the operating system of unit. Haven't had it long enough to compare electric bill.

Perfect for the job

Comments about Danby DDR5009REE Dehumidifier:

This inexpensive and well-made device performed perfectly in helping us make our basement more useable. I have a train collection there and the cooler temps and humidity encouraged mildew on some of the older trains. When I plugged this unit in, it dropped the humidity from 70%-plus down below 50% in a few days. And its warmer air exhaust raised the room temperature to a comfortable level. The train room, which is relatively large, is now much more pleasant to work in, and the trains are more protected.

The drain line is easy to hook up (I have it drained to the nearby sump pit), and it is easy to adjust the levels. It is a breeze to roll around and keep out of the way, and the dust filter only needs periodic cleaning. The only downside is the continuously-running fan - a necessary feature to keep the air circulating, but which could be an issue if used in more regularly-populated areas. Even that is not as bad as some other units, and I have come to accept it as simple "white noise" and hardly notice it anymore. In sum, I recommend this product highly. Thanks Danby!

DDR5009REE

Comments about Danby DDR5009REE Dehumidifier:

I recently received the Danby DDR5009REE dehumidifier from Sylvane and am very pleased with my purchase. I suffered flooding and damage during Hurricane Irene and as part of the preventive maintenance and renovation I purchased not only a dehumidifier but also a generator as well. I was concerned about the noise level of the unit and am delighted that it is quieter than I imagined it might be. Compared with previous portable dehumidifiers I've used in the past where I've had to empty the bucket once a day, this is top of the line. I like the direct drain option which allows me to hook it up to my sump pump and never have to worry about emptying the bucket. The controls are easy to use and I like the programmable humidity settings and two speed fan. Even the handy remote control makes controlling the humidity easy.

The appearance of this unit is very attractive. I have set it into the wall so that only the front and part of the top is showing and it looks sleek and blends in with the wall without taking up much room. As space is an important factor in this finished basement, I'm happy with the overall look and performance of this Danby appliance.

Another smart feature is the auto restart. I like the fact that after a power outage that the unit will automatically switch back on and continue to work at keeping the environment at manageable humidity levels.

The service Sylvane provided was excellent. Easy to order online and delivery was very prompt. I could not be happier with my purchase.

Fantastic little work horse keeping us comfortable!

Comments about Danby DDR5009REE Dehumidifier:

We live in an average 2-bedroom condo in the state of Washington. Yes, where it rains and rains and rains. We have moss instead of grass in our yard most of the year, and have always fought mold and mildew in our house throughout the wet season (which lasts 9 months...). This year, after discovering mold growing on clothes in our closet, and developing a severe asthmatic condition, I INSISTED on trying a dehumidifier.

We ordered this size because it seemed to fit our needs (none of our rooms exceeds 350 sq. ft.). We received it from across the country in about 5 days, which is reasonable. The unit was expertly packed and arrived without incident. I plugged it in and was amazed to read a humidity level over 70%. Yikes! Within a few hours, it was in the 50's. After a little while longer, right at 50%. I moved it to the next room and within a short time it was at 50% as well. Wow!

I noticed that all the condensation on the windows was GONE! Completely GONE! The air felt much more comfortable - less damp, obviously, and warmer. The exhaust air does come out feeling warm, which for us is great because we always feel cold inside but don't want to turn up the thermostat any higher!

The second day we had the Danby my husband took it into the bathroom to test it out during shower time. When he got out of the shower, the mirrors were still clear, the temp was in the 80's and the humidity level was only 64%. (Without the dehumidifier the humidity level in the bathroom after a shower was in the 80's...) Wow again! Instead of freezing dampness after a shower, w're enjoying warm dry sauna-like feeling. And no having to clear the mirrors using the hair dryer!

We appreciate the wheels on the unit, which enable us to move it into different rooms as needed. And it turns out that we do move it around a LOT. Enough to make buying another unit worthwhile in the future. And we're THRILLED with the results - no more condensation in windows, no more mold in closets, no more musty smell and no more dampness.

For the first year I feel like I'm really READY for winter rains... Thanks, Danby and Sylvane!

Works very well; just what the basement needs.

Comments about Danby DDR5009REE Dehumidifier:

Replaced a 14 year old Sears dehumidifier (it was still running but increasingly inefficient even though I cleaned it well every year) used in the basement. Purchased and installed the Danby end of May, 2011. Has worked flawlessly all summer and fall. Our first Danby product.

Purchased it after much research. Had brown outs and many power outages and we're having the wettest year on record. Knew it had a continuously running fan and very good reputation. Watched our electric bill actually go down compared to the last two years. I believe the continuously running fan is a good feature as it does a good job moving the air around which helps lower the humidity everywhere in the basement. I know a lot of collected water has moved through the drain tube and into the floor drain. Basement never smelled musty. With the onset of cold weather I'll be shutting it down and cleaning it.

Comments about Danby DDR5009REE Dehumidifier:

Overall, it works well. We used it in our unfinished basement to keep the moisture out, and it seems to be doing the job. We have it running constantly using the hose attachment. The only negative aspect is the hose is not very long.

Does What It Is Supposed To Do

By Tom

from USA

Comments about Danby DDR5009REE Dehumidifier:

It certainly does knock down the humidity pretty quickly. This is my first dehumidifier so I can't base it's performance against anything else.

Noise: I compare it to an average room sized window air conditioner. On low it sounds like AC on low and similarly on high, without the deeper hum of the AC's refrigeration going. Call it more like a window AC running on the fan setting only.
Compare it also to a large 2' box fan (like the typical box store sells), running on medium.

Dislikes: I wish the unit would cycle off when it reaches it's humidity setting rather than run on in circulate mode. Better yet put a switch on it so the user has a choice.

Worth Noting: This unit is fairly heavy so anyone not in reasonable shape, very old or sick shouldn't plan on lugging it up and down basement stairs very often. Even empty it carries a bit awkwardly in front of you so climbing stairs can be a bit of a problem for such people.
