The humidifier was easy to set up and had very simple directions. I chose to utilize the drain hose instead of the removable bucket. (I will note that the bucket is not hard to remove as stated in other reviews from other sites - if it were full and had to be removed, it may splash a little, but would pose little danger in a total spill) The unit does have to be elevated higher than the drain you will utilize. I currently have my unit on a table beside an unused toilet in my basement. The hose is thin plastic and could be cut easily to a shorter length. It also fits perfectly into a 3/4 inch PVC pipe. I eventually plan to tap mine into the main drain for our home using PVC.
I placed the unit in my open, 2700 square foot basement on a Friday night. The home is 5 years old, and we have had humidity and mold problems since it was built. The basement temperature was 70 degrees and the humidity was 68% when I turned the humidifier on. I have had the unit running for 8 days and the humidity in my basement is now 40%. It took 6 days to reach this humidity. I have the unit set for 40% but it will go lower if you desire. I do not know how long it would take it to decrease the humidity farther. I also ran a box fan to increase air circulation for the first 5 days, but have not had it back on since. The humidifier now only runs when the humidity increases above 40%. However the fan does continue to run constantly. I have mine set on the high setting.
The humidity dropped to 55% within the first 24 to 48 hours and steadily decreased from there. I'm very happy with this product and plan to order another for the basement. Although one did the job, I hold the opinion that two units are justified for a basement the size of mine and will decrease the workload on an individual unit. The fan does run constantly. It can not be heard upstairs in my house, and would not pose a noise problem in a room by itself. Probably not good for an occupied bed room or living room. The fan noise is comparable to a regular box fan.
The temperature in my basement has been a steady 68-72 degrees.

I live in a mobile home and have 3 rooms that run into each other; sort of. Had to run this Danby on the lowest humidity setting to try to obtain the Comfort Zone on our stand-alone humidistat...didn't work and in the process made those 2 to 3 rooms extremely hot. Hot enough where the furnace wouldn't turn on and/or the AC kept running. Then after removing the water bucket I'd come back to a puddle on the floor. Didn't matter how long I left the unit Off with the bucket In for any residual water to come out; I'd always have a puddle.
Sylvane was so good about taking the unit back and I have since decided to try their Winix 70 pint..ordered today 12/2/2012.
Other than the puddles, the Danby would probably work for anyone who didn't have a furnace/AC thermostat nearby that the excess heat can interfer with.

Danby Dehumidifier

By Arn

Pros

  • Attractive
  • Has Reusible Filter
  • Holds lots of water
  • Reasonably Priced
  • Very Quiet For Its Size

Cons

  • Often Defrosts
  • Short cord
  • Vents Air Out Top

Best Uses

  • Used in basement

Comments about Danby DDR70A1GP 70 Pint Dehumidifier:

So far (2 weeks) the unit has been good. I seems to spend a lot of time defrosting the coils and doesn't seem to be drawing out as much water as our old Whirlpool. It is much quieter than the Whirlpool though. The water compartment tray is difficult to grasp when you remove it. It vents out the top which is not my personal preference in that one can not direct the dried air in any particular direction other than at the ceiling.

Comments about Danby DDR70A1GP 70 Pint Dehumidifier:

This is my second Danby dehumidifier. The first is still going strong in my basement. Our family owned restaurant was flooded by hurricane Sandy. I purchased the Danby dehumidifier to dry out the stripped walls and to control mold. What started out as 90+ humdity is now down to 48%. The Danby just keeps humming even without heat on, the defrost function keeps the machine functional.

Comments about Danby DDR70A1GP 70 Pint Dehumidifier:

We use the dehumidifier every night while we sleep. We don't normally run it during the day because the fan is a bit loud, but that's okay since most fans/dehumidifiers are somewhat noisy. Before purchasing this product, I read a lot of negative comments from other people not liking the fan running all the time so I looked into it further. We now understand the fan should run continually as it's necessary for the machine to work efficiently/properly. We are very happy with how it works - the machines settings are simple to set, the bucket is easy to take in and out and the air filter works very well... and you do need to clean the filter every other week but it's very simple to do. Now that the humidity levels are where they should be, our home feels warmer and we don't have a mold problem in our windows because there isn't any more condensation built up. Since this is the 1st time we bought a dehumidifier, we chose a bigger machine then what we really needed for our upstairs living space. This one is a bit heavy to take up and down the stairs so next year we'll put this one in our basement and buy a smaller one for upstairs which will make it easier to move from room to room if we need to. After a lot of research, I was impressed with Danby's products and the fact that they are a reputable company who makes quality products that are not made in China. We've also had excellent customer service and have been very pleased with the overall quality and service received.

Comments about Danby DDR70A1GP 70 Pint Dehumidifier:

This unit is pretty quiet, the only thin you realy hear is the fan which is on all the time so it is very easy to get use to the sound. Biggest draw back for me is that it wouldnt go more then 5-6 hours in my room before the bucket was full. After instaling a direct drain I am very happy and will be purchasing more of these in the future.

Comments about Danby DDR70A1GP 70 Pint Dehumidifier:

I have my Danby setup in the basement. Right out of the box it was very easy to setup and the controls are easy to use. I like the fact that It can be used all year round with the low operating temperature. My previous unit broke because it would not operate under 65 degrees. It froze up because it did not have the auto shut off feature of the Danby. I use the timer feature several times a week. Almost every morning I put it on for 1 and 3 hours on low fan speed and it keeps my basement perfectly dry. The hose setup allows you to easily connect a garden hose that you can run into a sump pump, so you never have to empty the bucket. It's a very functional product.

Comments about Danby DDR70A1GP 70 Pint Dehumidifier:

I put this unit in the crawl space for moisture control.Pluged the unit in and ran it for 2 days. The moisture level started droping and is now in an acceptable range. I purchaced the basement package and find the remote therometer is a real asset to monitor the tempature and humidity in the crawl space. I did not install the pump yet so I can see what moisture is being collected.I will be hooking up the pump in a couple days and have all confidance that it will be as reliable as the dehydrater and thermoniter.
The only thing I was concerned about was the discharge air flow. The dehydrater discharge was straight out the top. this would allow good air flow around the crawl space. I attached an air deflector to the top and now the air discharges circulating air around the crawl spase. This is not a falt of the design or to imply this is a problum with the unit. Only my application needed to be modified to accomplish what I needed.
I did a lot of looking and did the math on size and specs. needed to clear my crawl space. This unit was a rated big enough to do the job and the pump and remote theromater is good complment to the dehydrater.
