Purchased bacteria treatment to stop buildup on wick. It does stop nearly all the slime that accumulates in the water tanks and reduces the buildup on the wick by at least 90%. We use triple filtered RO water in the humidifier, so the contaminant buildup on the wick is much less than if we used tap water. However, there is still a small amount of buildup on the top edge of the wick after 2 weeks of use (about 2 gallons of water per day). Soaking the top edge of the wick in a mild vinegar solution removes this buildup during the regular 2 week cleaning cycle.
