Our original filter/wick became contaminated with water minerals and air bacteria. We were not using the anti bacteria liquid additive the first year we had our humidifier. Soaking the original filter in a mild bleach solution overnight caused it to soften and to fall apart in places. We ordered a replacement filter and it arrived in only one day! We now use a mild vinegar solution to remove mineral deposits from the filter/wick. We also use the Essick anti bacteria liquid to prohibit airborne bacteria and stop almost all the slime from building up in the tank and on the filter/wick. The top edge of the filter is where the most buildup occurs. We now clean the humidifier every 2 weeks according to the instructions and it is now much easier to keep it clean.
