This MA1201 is well designed, from the economy of its enclosure design all the way to its use of a microprocessor to switch the fan speeds automatically, depending on the actual demand load. The ease of loading water makes it a pleasant task to be performed each and every day. In my experience so far, the unit uses four gallons each day on average. I have its output feeding directly into the return duck of my 1500 sq ft single floor condo. I have also built a simple wooden enclosure that channels the moist air flow directly into the intake duck, located in a central hall area. This enclosure also reduces the sound level a bit. Most of the time, the unit cycles back and forth between slow and medium speed.
My HVAC system includes a 2.0 ton heat pump and I am located in a suburb west of Philadelphia along the Mainline. Prior to deploying the unit, I had to run the temperature several degrees higher during the day and in the evening hours in order to maintain a comfortable living environment. With the unit engaged, I have found that I now run our temperature set-point at some 3-4 degrees lower and still feel very comfortable. My wife appreciates the added humidity level and neither of us have any dry skin problems. The electrical energy savings is rather considerable, to put it mildly. Also prior to installing this unit for the entire condo (two bedroom and den plus great room and kitchen/dinning area) I had a competitive unit installed in our bedroom. During the winter months, the RH ran a consistent 6-7% points difference between the bedroom and the rest of the condo. Now, this unit maintains the same RH level through the entire living space. A significant improvement is the result. Nice work and glad to provide this level of feedback.

Pros: Highly effective, I didn't measure it but I would certainly believe than it can move 12 gallons a day. Easy to refill, Wicks are inexpensive.
Cons: Noisy, poor quality, creates a draft of cold air.

This product comes from Essick Air, and it is cheaply constructed (judging from other reviews, such is the quality standard of all their products). This item must have a huge profit margin because it is little more than some flimsy plastic parts which don't fit together very well, plus an electric fan.

Everyone seems to have different quality issues; on my unit, the float sensor is nonfunctional (either always on or always off, depending on how you adjust it). The hydrostat seems to be calibrated way off -- it reads about 10-15% lower than my (calibration verified) Caliber III Thermometer Hygrometer -- but still works, as long as you set it high enough.

But the main problem with this humidifier is the noise. On low it is loud enough to hear from 25 feet away. On medium it is hard to have a conversation. On high it drowns out most other noise. My girlfriend had to turn up the TV over it even when on low. On top of the fan noise, the propeller seems to be not quite balanced, so that the whole thing vibrates, and even rattles if oriented wrong.

Unfortunately for us consumers (but fortunately for Essick Air), there seems to be a few options for in-house humidifiers on the market with more than a few gallons a day of output. So if you really need all 12 gallons/day, and can't get one integrated with your heating system, this might be the best product on the market, despite all its shortcomings.

It works well in my 1500 square foot 3 level town house. The reservoir will last me 24 hours while maintaining a comfortable relative humidity. I had a problem with the first one received, but was issued a replacement quickly and so far this one is working as designed.

    Good product

Comments about Bemis Essick Air MA1201 Whole House Humidifier:

Works well and seems durable. My only complaint is that the top housing sits on the base insecurely. There is no latch or seal between the two main parts making the whole thing somewhat unstable. The top half (which contains the motor) could be easily separated from the base. If young children or rambunctious pets are among the house occupants one should consider this shortcoming. Otherwise its a nice unit......quiet and efficient.

The humidifier is fine. Doesn't knock my socks off, but for $100, it works just fine. You won't be overthrilled with this product, nor will you be angry that you bought it. It's a humidifier for crying out loud. It doesn't come with dancing clowns and marching bands!

We have been bothered by dryness for so many years...we finally got the bright idea to buy a whole house humidifier. Oh, for heaven's sake...should have bought this many many years ago. This is perfect for us. As for noise, on low...can not hear it at all and the next level doesn't bother us at all - we have surround sound so can't hear that or the coal stove either way. Just love this unit. It puts so much moisture into the air we are sleeping comfortable every night and waking up refreshed.

    MoistAIR humidifier works great.

Comments about Bemis Essick Air MA1201 Whole House Humidifier:

We received the humidifier within a couple days of placing the online order. The directions are very clear and it was very easy to set it up. We placed it in a central hallway location in our home so that the humid air is circulated throughout the entire house. So far, this humidifier has performed flawlessly. The digital readout of humidity on the front of the unit is very easy to see and makes it effortless to monitor our home air humidity level. The unit switches on and off as advertised.

The unit would be 5 stars if it were quieter at high fan speeds and if it had a water level indicator on the fill tank, or a clear plastic fill tank like our other home humidifiers.

Considering the very reasonable cost, this unit is a GREAT BUY!

    A couple of suggestions:

    1) It would be more convenient if the tank where you add water was made of clear plastic, or had a clear viewing window or a clear water level viewing tube on the side so that you could easily see how much water was remaining in the fillable container at any time. The unit does display a FILL indication when the tank runs dry. You can also gently lift on the handle of the tank to feel about how much water is remaining, but that requires extra effort and the water level can not be seen at a glance as you walk by.

    2) The fan on our unit has 4 speeds, F1 thru F4. F1 (lowest) is hardly noticible unless you are right at the machine. F2 is a little louder, F3 is rather loud and F4 is REALLY loud. Other owners of this unit have said that they only use the 2 high fan settings when they are away from home. We plan to do the same.

The fan is has a modern aerodynamic design with six blades, but it is still loud at high speeds. To lower the acoustic noise, it might be possible to increase the number of blades while keeping the same outer diameter, or to increase the outer diameter and lower the fan rotation speed, or to change the design to a "squirrel cage" type fan with many blades to reduce the blade noise at the higher airflow settings. This is a typical problem with helicopter tail rotors and much research has been done in recent years. These changes might be considered as part of the product development and improvement effort.

    Great product

Comments about Bemis Essick Air MA1201 Whole House Humidifier:

We have a Bi-level home with 1000 sq ft downstairs and 1100sq feet upstairs. I put this humidifier in the middle of downstairs and it's keeping the entire home well humidified and only needs refilling about every 3 days. I run it on low speed only and you can't even hear it run.
It is compact so it will fit anywhere in your home and still look good.
