  • Product Overview

Take control of the humidity in your home with the Friedrich D70BP Dehumidifier. This 70-pint dehumidifier features a built-in condensate pump and low-temperature operation. The Friedrich D70BP works great as a basement dehumidifier or as a portable dehumidifier for humidity control in various rooms. Key features include multiple draining methods, easy digital controls, adjustable humidity control, automatic defrost, and much more.

    Three Draining Methods

The Friedrich D70BP 70-Pint Dehumidifier has three methods for draining collected moisture. The first option allows you to manually drain the water condensate bucket. The removable drain bucket holds 16.2 pints of water and easily pulls out from the front of the dehumidifier for simple drainage.

To avoid having to constantly empty the drain bucket manually, you can take advantage of the continuous drain method or use the built-in condensate pump. A drain hose is included with the dehumidifier for continuous drain operation. The drain hose connects to the back of the dehumidifier and must be placed horizontally so collected moisture can be gravity drained. Additionally, you can pump excess water to another location up to 15 feet away from the dehumidifier using the internal condensate pump.

    User-Friendly Controls with Digital Display

The Friedrich D70BP 70-Pint Dehumidifier features user-friendly electronic controls and digital display, making it simple to use and easy to operate. Monitor your room temperature and room humidity with ease using the two digital display screens on the control panel. The first display screen shows the current room temperature during normal operation and it displays the timer setting when the timer button is pressed. The second digital screen displays the relative humidity during normal operation and it shows your desired humidity level when you adjust the humidity setting.

    Helpful Indicators and Automatic Defrost

In addition to easy-to-understand controls, the Friedrich 70-Pint Dehumidifier features convenient indicators for easy maintenance and optimum performance. The bucket full indicator will illuminate on the display panel when the water condensate bucket is full. To prevent damage to your dehumidifier or an overflow of water in your home, the unit will automatically shut down until the drain bucket is emptied and properly replaced.

The Friedrich D70BP 70-Pint Dehumidifier also features automatic defrost mode, which is very beneficial for low-temperature operation. When the dehumidifier is operating in temperatures below 41 degrees Fahrenheit, frost can begin to build up on the evaporator coils. To keep the dehumidifier running normally and efficiently, the defrost indicator will illuminate and the system will automatically start the defrost cycle.

    Additional Highlights

    • Easy Mobility: Four rolling casters and two side-grip carry handles make it easy to transport this portable dehumidifier from room to room.
    • Reusable Filter: The Friedrich 70-Pint D70BP Dehumidifier includes a washable air filter that easily slides out of the front panel.
    • Electronic Controls: The digital screens display the timer and temperature settings, so you can monitor the humidity level in your space and maintain a comfortable room temperature.
    • Temperature Selector: This Friedrich dehumidifier allows you to choose between Celsius and Fahrenheit temperature display.
    • Multiple Fan Speeds: This portable dehumidifier is equipped with a two-speed fan.
    • Adjustable Humidity: A built-in humidistat allows you to set your ideal humidity level from 30% to 90% relative humidity in increments of 5%.

    Summary

The Friedrich D70BP 70-Pint Dehumidifier eliminates damaging excess humidity in basements and other rooms and does it conveniently with a range of user-friendly features.

    What Customers Love

    • Easy Adjustable Humidity - Set your desired humidity and the dehumidifier maintains that level without intervention.
    • 3 Draining Methods - Drain the dehumidifier how you like. Choose from manual, gravity, or pump draining to suit the needs of your space.

    Things To Consider

    • Some Noise on High - Customers report that the unit is a bit loud on high. You may want to consider running it on low when you're in the room and switching it to a higher speed (if needed) when you exit.

This is the first review on a product over the internet that I have done, and thought it was about time since I have used these reviews to help decide on a purchase. Over the years I have had several dehumidifiers for basement use such as LG, Whirlpool and GE, all 50 pint units. They all worked reasonably well while this lasted, on average two years. A major selling point for me was the 5 year warranty on the sealed system for the Friedrich and the presence of local authorized dealers that repair dehumidifiers. Another favorable point is that not only does the compressor cycle off when the desired humidity level is reached, the fan also is shut off. Most of the other units out there in this price range have the fan continuously running. A continuous drain option was important, which was easy to set up and works well as long as connections are well secured. Perhaps some day I may try the condensate pump feature. Other positive features are current temp and humidity displays, two fan speeds, auto-restart on power failure, and bucket full and defrost lamps. The unit does have a timer feature that I do not use, but does appear to be of limited functionality.

I mentioned compressor and fan cycling as a positive feature, but others have commented the the cycles are too brief. I have to agree but cycle time is most likely dictated by how fast dank air leaks into the environment. Since I use it in a basement that is not well sealed to incoming moist air, it is not surprising that the unit's cycle time is relatively short ( a few minutes). However, I use it in the basement so the later aspect is not bothersome.

I have found the unit quieter than previous models I have used that had smaller compressors. I do use it at low fan speed. Perhaps in a smaller living space compressor and fan noise may be objectionable but this would be common for any dehumidifier in this size range. Others have commented on heat generation but I find nothing unusual or objectionable here since heat generation is a property associated with refrigeration mechanics. I suspect a unit of this capacity would keep a small room cozier.

The only real negative feature I have encountered so far is the awkwardness of emptying the bucket, something that has been commented on by others. I discovered this by accident when a kink in the drain line diverted water to the bucket. Since I do not intentionally use the bucket option, this is not a problem but I can see that it could be for those who rely on this feature.

Overall, the unit is a thirsty one and works very well and easily in keeping the targeted humidity setting. I am very satisfied. However, I have used the unit for 6 weeks now so time will only reveal how durable the Friedrich (70 pint) dehumidifier can be.

Bought this unit to use in a conditioned crawlspace that needed only moderate reduction in humidity from 51% to 45% The unit did this well, but it leaked out from the bottom, right out of removing from the box at initial install. After leveling perfectly and removing and reinstalling all drain plugs it seemed to stop leaking but then condensate pump runs continuously with a high pitched whine like a hair dryer. This was an intolerable amount of noise and carried up through house two floors. Friedrich customer service offered no useful advice, other than sending out a technician who would be from a service 30 miles away. If he couldn't fix it, I would still be on my own to remove unit, repackage and return or exchange. The unit is heavier than others with the same specifications. We returned this promptly. Be warned that the decibel rating might apply to the compressor, but not necesarily the condensate pump which creates its own noise.

      Comments about Friedrich D70BP Dehumidifier:

I like the automatic system that pumps water out when the bucket fills, but the system seems to work at times, and then it conks out. I have to check it too often, which is exactly what I didn't want to do. I have set it up in a basement which has only outside access, so slogging through New England snow to check on whether the dehumidifier is working is a nuisance. Can't really say how loud it is, but if the unit were completely dependable the design and features would be perfect.

                  Comments about Friedrich D70BP Dehumidifier:

This was purchased to replace a recalled unit for use in the workshop. It does a great job of maintaining a constant humidity in the shop. However, the design could use some inprovement. The air discharge is straight up and with the unit located in a corner of the shop the air went straight up, hit the ceiling, and came back down in the same area causing frequent cycling. I added a cardboard deflector to the top to send the air out into the shop to get better circulation. The most annoying problem is how often it cycles on and off. I can understand that it needs to sample the air every so often, but it would seem that only the fan would be needed to accomplish this. However, every time it cycles,an ammeter inline shows that full current is drawn on every start which means that the compressor cycles every time with full inrush current being drawn every time. Not very energy efficient. Not sure I would buy another one.
