I've been using the unit for about two months now to monitor air particle quality around my home and for several neighbors as well. The unit performs very well, although it can read high when too close to a light source. I've found the unit very useful in field-testing various air purifier systems. The DC1100 reports accurately even when the unit sits right at the exhaust for the purifier. As a result I have purchased a new filtering system for my home that the DC1100 confirms dramatically reduces air particle counts.

For fun, throw a bag of popcorn into the microwave and watch the particle counts shoot through the roof.

I have used this product several times now and find it easy to use and understand. I was worried about its ability to provide reliable and consistant readings, but so far so good. To test it, I placed it in several areas. Then moved it several times back and forth between the locations. Each time I did this within several minutes of rotation I received consistant readings for each area. This made me confident that the readings were reliable. I wish it was a bit more sensitive to smaller particle size, but for a good quick idea of whats in the air I find it acceptable. Sylvane's price was also very competitive!

The laser particle counter is incredibly easy to use. I just took it out of the box, plugged in the AC adapter, and it started giving measurements immediately without requiring time to acquire a sample. I did find that when moving it from room to room you need to give it some time to stabilize at the new value. Maybe it takes some time for the old air to be purged with new air.
It gives appearances of being accurate. In a room with a HEPA filter it measured 50 small (all particles down to 1 micron) and 5 large (5 microns and above) particles per 0.01 cubic feet. In a room without a filter it measured 200 and 25. In a dusty room it measured 440 and 78. (I’m not sure about the units. A cleanroom website said that a typical office building has 500,000 to 1,000,000 particles per cubic foot. Is my bedroom really a class 5000 cleanroom?) There is a discrepancy between the manual and the website’s description. The manual says that “Small particles are all particles detected by the DC1100 down to its detection limit â€" approximately 1 micron.â€� while the website says that “smallâ€� equals 1 â€" 5 microns.
When you start it up it reads continuously, but it saves readings on a minute to minute basis. By hitting the mode button you can access this data on a minute to minute, hour to hour, or day to day basis, with the reading being the average concentration over that minute, hour, or day. To save energy and wear and tear on the instrument, you can select the “monitor� mode, in which it only samples for one minute per hour.
