  • Product Overview

The Safety Siren Pro Series 3 Radon Gas Detector helps keep your family and home safe from the potentially deadly effects of long-term radon exposure. This digital radon detector—also known as the Safety Siren Pro Series HS71512—mounts easily to a wall and quickly plugs into a standard 120-volt household outlet. The detector continuously samples the air to provide accurate radon level readings in your home.

    What is Radon?

Radon is an odorless, colorless, and tasteless radioactive gas that can be found in homes, offices, and schools—regardless of whether they are new or old construction. Radon is created during the natural radioactive breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), radon generating from soil gas is the most common source of radon accumulation in homes and buildings. Radon can enter your home in a few ways, including through:

    • Cracks in solid flooring and walls
    • Construction joints
    • Gaps in suspended floors and around service pipes
    • Cavities inside walls

Radon is highly toxic and has been named the second leading cause of lung cancer—after cigarette smoke—by the U.S. Surgeon General. The EPA estimates that each year, approximately 21,000 people die from lung cancer stemming primarily from long-term radon exposure. To safely avoid the health effects of radon exposure, the EPA recommends that corrective action be taken if long-term radon levels in your home exceed 4 picoCuries per liter (PCi/L). Learn more about the dangers of radon in our article January is National Radon Action Month.

    How the Radon Detector Works

Monitoring the radon level in your home is easier than ever with the Safety Siren Pro Series 3 Radon Gas Detector. Manufactured by Michigan-based Family Safety Products, Inc., the Safety Siren Pro Series 3 detector features a clear numeric LED display that provides accurate and continuous radon level readings. Because radon gas originates in the ground, the detector should be placed in the lowest level of your home—and remain undisturbed. Once installed, the detector will continuously monitor radon levels and record and store the results.

The Safety Siren Pro Series 3 Electronic Radon Gas Detector's LED display can be set to display a short-term average radon level, which gives you an average reading over 7 days, or a long-term average reading, which displays the average radon level since the last unit reset, storing data for up to 5 years. Regardless of the selection you choose, the Safety Siren radon detector sounds an audible alarm anytime a short-term average or long-term average reading exceeds 4 pCi/L. The detector's alarm will continue to chirp every hour until the average reading returns to below 4 pCi/L.

Detector readings are updated every hour, and the unit runs a self diagnostic test every 24 hours for your safety and peace of mind. The Safety Siren Pro Series 3 Radon Detector also features a multi-function menu button that allows you to switch display options, conduct a manual test of the detector, mute or reactivate the audible alarm, and reset the memory.

This Meter/Monitor is a great tool. We've done some initial Radon testing with long-term test kits submitted for laboratory analysis - The result in one of our partially subterranian rooms this winter was 8.9 pCi/L. Since we wanted to try several Radon reduction/ mitigating techniques and know the results in days rather than months, I ordered the SafetySiren Pro Series 3 digital readout Meter after seeing the Reviews showing that nearly all buyers of this unit were pleased.

While still winter, our initial reading in the same area in the room on this digital readout Meter was 8.4 pCi/L; this was most likely lower than before because we have been making an effort to open the window more often.

To initially clear the air in the room, I opened the window and door in the room and ran a fan to blow air (and Radon) out the window for a few hours. The Meter updated values displayed hourly and beeped until the Radon level fell below 4 pCi/L. We will try a few different ventilation techniques in the room over a period of time to see what works best without requiring excessive power consumption, noise, drafts, etc.

I was pleased to find that the direct plug-in power supply provided and used with the Meter is UL Listed.

I fully agree with most of the valuable comments made by Gus T on 1/6/2010. Here are the key comments of his which were most useful to me: "This is a great investment and worth every penny. The only real complaint I had was that the manual should have made a couple of things a little more clear. I read reviews where some complained about no battery backup, so people thought the unit would have to start over if they lost power, but the unit will actually retain the reading in memory until it regains power, so thats good enough for me.

Also, if it goes to 4.0 or above at any time, the LED will be lit up beside (L) long term and won't switch over to (S) short term until radon levels are below 4.0. Again this is no big deal and they did this on purpose, but it would have beeen nice if it was made clear in the manual. The unit is made in the USA up in MI, which is also good. Go ahead and get one."

After we get this room's Radon level under control, we plan to move the Meter to the next room which reached 7 pCi/L when we measured with a long-term test kit. In the meantime, we're ventilating that room much more than before. Once that room is taken care of, we plan to offer/loan the Meter to my brother-in-law to check his home as well.

This product has been know for it's defect, as per my mitigation guy. It will not stay in the "S" mode when that's what I set it at. It automatically goes into the "L" mode and will not return to the "S" mode. This happens intermittently; and the reading is not over 4.0. This product is about my health, and the health of my lungs. Which I consider very important as I have lost a loved one from lung cancer caused by radon. I am extremely disappointed, and want a replacement that works properly!

Wanted for mitigating. 48 hour delay from "reset" is too slow. Understand the ruling on it. Would be nice to have a way to "one time" reset with immediate results, like a geiger counter does.

Comments about Safety Siren Pro Series3 Radon Gas Detector:

We were looking for a device that would allow periodic monitoring of each room in our home. Professional testing revealed high levels of radon, and after the system was placed, the level dropped to 0.8, an excellent result. But, we wanted to monitor the rooms over the garage as well as confirm the post-installation test results. This unit works perfectly and gave the same result as the pro test.

Comments about Safety Siren Pro Series3 Radon Gas Detector:

The instructions are short, simple, and easy to follow. I essentially just plugged it in and in 48hrs got the same results as a mail in short term radon test I did a few weeks prior. We then reset the unit and put it in another room on another floor. I have done this a dozen times now recording results all over our house. I am experimenting with opening windows to see the effect on radon in each area. We are also testing the homes we grew up and staid in during school. We should have a picture of our radon exposure throughout our lives.

I've been wanting to know for some time about the Radon level in my home. When I first plugged it it and it ran it's first 48 hours, I had a reading of 5.6 pCi/L. I installed a exhaust fan in my crawl space now my level is at 0.5 pCi/L. This gives me a good piece of mind to be able to monitor and keep the levels as low as I can.
