We live in a 1500 sq. foot rancher with a large crawl space in Louisa Co. Va. Our crawl was moist to begin with when we moved in 2 yrs. ago and we had to have it treated for mold, as the house was vacant for quite a while.

The original vapor barrier did not cover the entire dirt floor AND our HVAC ductwork and handling unit is located in our crawl which was sweating constantly, causing not only moisture condensate but our insulation was falling as well. After trying to put down more 10mil vapor barrier, even taping it to the walls and sealing up the vents, we still had moisture issues.

We purchased a 70 pint Danby home dehumidifier as our neighbor told us they had the same problem and a little unit took care of their crawl just fine. However, not so for us. It worked well in the beginning, but ran constantly, had no humidistat, so we had to go under the house often to check on things and our electric bill went up $50-$75 a month!!!

We had gutters put on the house last year, thinking that would help and it didn't do as much as it needed to. There is no evidence of any standing water or leaks and our home sits on a slope-you would think a humid crawl wouldn't be such an issue. But, we have a very clay soil here in Louisa, and it does hold moisture well. So, this year we decided after much deliberation and comparing different dehumidifier brands to go ahead and spend the money on something that we could set and forget it, with an incredible reputation for longevity and reliablility.

We found that doing it ourselves was much more affordable then having a moisture company come in and provide us with crawlspace encapsulation and deumidifier- thousands less! Came UPS Freight-WONDERFUL COMPANY-prompt, professional delivery within the week of purchase-Shipping was FREE! Set up couldn't be easier. Here is how we did it- My wife and I placed the Santa Fe on concrete pavers we bought at Lowe's over our existing vapor barrier with 2ft clearance over top from the floor joists to the machine and leveled it with the bubble level provided on the machine.

Then, we slid the clear tubing provided, onto the barb nipple at the machine and secured it with an automotive hose clamp so it wouldn't leak. We bought a 2nd PVC barb nipple 5/8 inch to slide the clear tubing over at the end again securing it with a clamp and of course used PVC glue to attach that to 3/4" PVC pipe. We chiseled out a hole through the foundation block, which took some time, but well worth it, and ran the pvc thru that, down the slope of our natural yard grade to a small gravel pit to facillitate drainage.

We buried the pvc underground with the tip just out over the rock so we can see it draining. The machine was plugged into our 110 outlet and set it @ 45% for now to get the moisture under control. Took about 10 minutes before we started to see water come out through the tubing. It has ran all day and we anticipate it to keep going until it gets the humidity level under control(78% at start). Noise is not an issue-we cannot hear it in the house at all. The crawl is noticeably warmer and drier already!(My wife is thrilled!)

Wish the power cord was a little longer and the clear tubing as well, but that is all that we can say negative about this wonderful machine. Like I said, we have spent a good amount of time looking at all the brands on the market and this by far was the best bang for our hard earned dollars. Can't wait to see how the doors close up in the house and how the crawl feels and smells over the next week. Go ahead and spend the money now and save yourself the hassle of a smaller, less efficient unit. With what we have spent on electricity over the past year for the home unit in which the fan had run pretty much all the time, we could have had 50% of the cost saved up. Live and learn I guess.

    Bad investment

Worked fine for a year and a half until it developed a leak and lost it's Freon. Tried to get the manufacturer to repair per 5 year warranty and was unsuccessful.

Comments about Santa Fe Advance 2 Dehumidifier:

My basement here in MD gets quite humid; some minor mold noticed on boxes, musty smell, etc. I have approximately 1800 sq. ft. and did not want to purchase a cheap foreign made dehumidifier from the big box stores as they do not last very long. I checked numerous web sites for high quality American made dehumidifiers and narrowed my choice to Sylvane.com. I was unsure about which model to get but after sending Sylvane an email with a question they recommended this item. I went with their advice and even though it is more then I wanted to spend I feel it will pay off in the long run. I ordered the Made in American unit via telephone late on a Friday and it came by UPS on Monday. Everything was packaged perfectly. Upon carrying it down the basement and prior to turning the unit on the directions state to remove a safety tie-band (plastic) which protects a component from shaking during transport. The only problem I had is once I snipped the tie-band I was unable to pull it out of the metal shroud. The tie-band was caught on a piece of metal and I did not want to force it out and damage something. I really tugged on the tie-band too but it wouldn't move. I had to remove several screws to access the interior to release the tie-band. No big deal but this might be a problem for someone else. As soon as the unit was turned on you could clearly see the water flowing out of the clear tube. I think Sylvane could perhaps double the length of the clear tube as I had to add some garden hose to the end to reach a sump pit. This unit overnight dropped the humidity level tremendously and I'm extremely happy with this purchase and the wonderful correspondence I had with Drew from Sylvane. One other suggestion I have is I wish the unit came with wheels in addition to the feet as I ended up making a wooden cart on wheels to be able to move the unit if needed.

Comments about Santa Fe Advance 2 Dehumidifier:

My crawl space had turned into a swimming pool with all the rain and condensation. Installed the Santa Fe and it's bone dry down there now. I kept it on the driest setting for a week; then turned it to 50-40% The box fan I have helping circulate air is louder then the dehumidifier itself......very quiet. I have the plumbing attached to the A/C drain and it works great. I used a small portion (3 inches) of the clear tubing for a "sight glass". The Santa Fe pours water out!!!

Comments about Santa Fe Advance 2 Dehumidifier:

I am one of those who had his AC unit upgraded to a larger seer system. My duct work is under the house so with this new more powerful and efficient system the ducts were sweating way more than they ever did. Over a couple of years this caused mold to begin to grow on the floor joists and flex pipe.

I had a expert come in and price sealing the crawl space and installing their own dehumidifier for 10K.

Instead, I redid all the vapor barrier under the house and also sealed up the walls and columns but left the vents alone because I have a combustible furnace which needs some air. Instead of sealing off the vents I just shut them to minimize outside air flowing in.

This unit states that best performance is seen with an area where outside air is controlled, I assume they mean sealed crawl space or basement like environment. This units maximum stated square footage coverage is recommended to be 2200 sq ft, my crawl space is about 2100.

After a few days from the unit running there is a noticeable difference in the amount of moisture. In fact I'm hard pressed to find a single duct sweating whereas before they all had droplets on them and most of them dripped because of the amount of moisture they collected on the outside. Even insulation that was once damp or noticeably wet is now dry.

This is one of those home projects and purchases where you are most definitely satisfied to spend the money. I did a lot of reading prior to this purchase, I went with this unit from the multiple good reviews from other customers who live in the south where humidity is high. I am very pleased that this product has lived up to its reviews.

So far the unit has been only running a week so I can't speak to the longevity of it, but at least one of my colleagues had the predecessor and he states it ran 5 years before breaking down.

I can only faintly hear the device if I am directly above it in the house, so it is very quiet.

Only needs to run for a few hours a day to keep my 2500 sq ft basement at 50% RH.
I use it with a timer so it only runs during the times I am on cheap rate electricity.
It has to be raised up on blocks by about an inch in order to attach the drain pump as shown in the instructions.

Santa Fe Advance dehumidifier works well in our basement. We've had it for 6 months. One adjustment we had to make was that it did have a loud vibrating noise when we first turned it on. However, we were able to adjust the screws on the plastic casing so the casing was no longer in contact with a vibrating internal componenet, thereby eliminating the vibration noise.
