Used in a 600 sq.ft. basement which tends to be very humid due to surrounding ground water issues and old house. It brought level from 77% to 53% in about 20 hours and now is keeping it between 42 to 50% with no problem. I do have it at a fairly low setting, about 1/3rd into the lowest range but with several tick marks to go yet before the lowest possible setting. I adjust it slightly every so often to maintain it around 48%. Its doing an excellent job. Its warmer now but even when the basement temp was in the 50's (about 55-58 degrees) it was working well. I can see either several large drops or a little stream of water come out into the clear hose every few to several seconds. We have had rain almost every day for a month too. It was a little "fussy" to set up as it seems to work most efficiently with it elevated (I put it on the box it came with and made sure its level) and with the "trap" they recommend in the manual. The trap is nothing more than a U shape in the hose about 14 inches from where it is attached to the unit, held in that shape with a small 9 inch shock cord. That keeps some water in the hose at that spot creating a kind of air block so it works better. Considering the price and the ads about it I expect this baby to last at least ten years and, even beyond, since it should be repairable if anything goes wrong. So far, it has cost me an extra $14 this past month on my electric bill, a little less than the previous, made in China, common dehumidifier cost. (also energy star rated). We'll see how that plays out going forward.

Once You Repair a Design and Manufacturing Defect, It Works Well

After wiring a circuit in the cellar for this unit to run on and setting up a spot for it, I plugged this unit in, turned it on, and got the worst grinding sound I've ever heard from it. The unit was level and had been allowed to sit for four hours (more than enough time for the refrigerant to run into its sump).

After being able to get a hold of no one from either Sylvane or Therma-stor (the manufacturer), I violated the warranty and removed the back cover of the machine. The source of the awful grinding noise was immediately obvious. A sheet metal box containing most of the electrical controls for the unit was loose and rubbing on the radial fan in the unit. (As a side note, this control box has a mechanical hygrometer/thermometer atop it with a multitude of dip switches on it. Don't move any of the switches. They're set where they're supposed to be at the factory.) I tugged the electrical box back as far as I could, but the clearance between the fan and box was never more than 1/16" or so. However, that was enough to get rid of the interference with the fan and allow the unit to operate.

After three months of use, the electrical enclosure managed to vibrate forward and engage the fan again. Since I didn't want to completely disassemble the unit to resolve this, I braced the electrical enclosure away from the fan with a pair of foam rubber shapes cut from a "Wacky Noodle" pool toy I picked up from Dollar General for a buck-fifty. Now the electrical box can't move. So far, the unit is working reliably again. Time will tell.

If anyone is considering this dehumidifier (or is wondering how to fix one that's grinding) and would like pictures detailing the quick and easy repair, email Clutch.Drofab@GMail.com.

Comments about Santa Fe Compact 2 Dehumidifier:

If you asked me about this product before it started leaking I would have given it 4 stars. Minus 1 for being very loud.

2 1/2 years is a short time for it to break. The basement was waterproofed at the same time I purchased the dehumidifier. French drain and pump added. So its not that damp to begin with.

Comments about Santa Fe Compact 2 Dehumidifier:

I was promised a free humidistat with my order but haven't gotten it. Not sure why that is so complicated or difficult. You should be clearer at the time of ordering.
It was easy to install and get working.
I'm not yet sure how effective it is and wish it had come with a MERV 11 filter (which can be purchased seperately.)
It is not as quiet as I'd hoped, and given my electric bill for 2 wks use it may not be as cost effective as I'd hoped, but that could change after the initial "drying out" period. Summer humidity could negate any reductions.

Comments about Santa Fe Compact 2 Dehumidifier:

Have the Compact-2 and seems to do a good job of keeping my crawlspace at 50% R.H. The adjustment knob is about 1/4 into the dry setting, but there is still more movement in the dry if I need it. It does not run all that much, but it is November. I want to see how much it runs in the humid summers of Virginia. I do have my crawl encapsulated as best as possible on a 18 year old house. Crawlspace is about 1300 square feet and 30" in height. I have the unit hanging in the center of my crawl from the floor joists. Hanging kit is easy and helps to keep unit out of the way. Dehumidifier looks and feels like quality, but will see how well it lasts. Unit can be heard directly above if no noise is in the house and i'm listening for it, so no big deal. Would buy again. If your in the market for a dehumidifier for your crawl, do not buy a big box store dehumidifier. They run continuous and I had one in crawl originally and later found out it was recalled because of fire hazard. It would also cost more to run then the Santa Fe Compact. I also have my ducted to an area 25 feet away to create more circulation in crawl and also to help with exhaust noise.

Comments about Santa Fe Compact 2 Dehumidifier:

The unit was straightforward to install. It took some experimenting to get the humidity level I want (sealed crawl space). I also had to think about how to drain it into a pump unit, but that worked out fine. It is fairly quiet, and it seems to operate efficiently. I hope it will last a long time, unlike the cheaper units I have tried before!

            - too noisy
            - should have option to drip condensed water from front or back of the unit
            - should have option to plug the unit in from either the front or back
            - does not come with a good condensed water effluent seal

We had a real wet crawl space - within days of installing - our humidity dropped tremendously and began drying everything out in our crawl space. Amazed at the quick and efficient results.

Comments about Santa Fe Compact 2 Dehumidifier:

The Santa Fe Compact 2 is a great addition to my shop. It keeps the RH within a few points of 42% which is my goal. Much more efficient than a consumer version that couldn't keep it below 50% and never cycled off. The Compact 2 runs a lot, but not all the time. It's reasonably quiet for the amount of air it moves. Well designed and effective.

I placed this unit in the basement of my 90 year old house. Started with 70% humidity at 72 degrees. This unit dropped the humidity to 50% in 6 hours and to 40% in 2 days. After 2 weeks the basement is staying between 38 and 39%. My 70 pint department store unit never got the humidity below 60%.
