  • Product Overview

Studies show that as much as 50% of the air in your home travels up from your basement or crawl space. This air is often higher in relative humidity than your indoor air and it can carry with it musty odors and symptom-triggering allergens such as mold spores, mildew, bacteria, and dust mites. Moreover, too-damp air in your crawl space or basement can damage your home's infrastructure, flooring, furniture, and electromechanical systems. That's why it is so important to keep these areas dry and clean. The Santa Fe Compact 2 Dehumidifier can help you do just that.

The Santa Fe Compact 2, also known as Santa Fe Model #4033600, is a powerful dehumidifier designed for use in basements and crawl spaces. With a horizontal configuration and a flow-through design, this unit removes excess moisture from the most compact of crawl spaces and the tightest basement areas. The unit removes approximately 70 pints of moisture under the American Home Appliance Manufacturers' (AHAM) industry-standard conditions of 80 degrees F at 60% relative humidity. That's enough to cover medium-sized basements and crawl spaces measuring up to 1,600 sq. ft.  This dehumidifier operates in temperatures as low as 56 degrees.

For larger crawlspaces, you may want to consider the Santa Fe Max Dry Dual XT Dehumidifier.

    Amazingly Compact

Santa Fe Compact Dehumidifier - Made in the USA

The Santa Fe Compact crawl space dehumidifier measures only 21 in. wide by 12 in. high by 12 in. deep. Never before has such a powerful dehumidifier been available in such a small package. This unit allows you to conserve your valuable crawl space and basement space. When available space is particularly tight, the Compact is actually small enough to fit in between floor joists. And with the optional Hang Kit, the unit can even be suspended from above in between floor joists.

    Basement Installation

Using this unit as a basement dehumidifier is simple. All you have to do is plug in the unit and direct the gravity drain hose to where you would like the collected water to be drained. This may be a nearby drain, through a doorway, or out a window. One optional installation technique involves ducting the unit. Ducting the Santa Fe Compact 2 in your basement allows you to hide the unit away in a storage closet or place it where it is most convenient for you and run ductwork to and from your space. You can also choose to remove moist air from one room and discharge dry air into an alternate room, if desired.

    Crawl Space Installation

Crawl space air vents are often not effective enough to control humidity year-round. As you may imagine, when hot moist air enters the crawlspace through a vent, the air will cool and release moisture. Therefore, a sealed crawl space – coupled with a reliable crawl space dehumidifier – is the best way to maintain a dry and healthy environment. A three-step installation process is recommended for total humidity control in your crawl space:

    • Seal all outside vents to eliminate outside air and control outside moisture intake.
    • Install vapor barriers over any exposed earth.
    • Install the Santa Fe Compact dehumidifier to provide complete humidity control to optimum crawl space conditions.

As an additional option, you may also choose to run ductwork to the far ends of a crawl space to force air circulation.

    Setting Up A Drain Trap

Santa Fe recommends setting up a drain trap when installing any of its horizontal dehumidifiers, including the Compact 2. This prevents air from moving back up through the hose and backflowing water into the machine. This also prevents potential water leaks from the corners of each unit. It's easy to create a drain trap using the included drain hose or a separate PVC trap. Watch this video on how to create a drain trap for your Santa Fe dehumidifier to learn more.

    Customized Operation

There are a variety of accessories available that help tailor this unit to fit your specific application. You can choose from ducting kits, hang kits, caster kits, and condensate pump kits to be sure that this unit will fit your installation needs. In addition, an optional remote dehumidistat can also be used with this unit. It functions similar to a thermostat for an air conditioner. The dehumidistat is activated when the moisture level in a separate space rises above a specific threshold.

    Condensation Pump Option

If gravity drainage is not a possible option for eliminating the collected water in your application, a condensation pump kit is available. The Compact dehumidifier is easily adaptable to use a condensate pump, and this will give you the option of running the drain hose up and out of a window or around a doorway to your yard or garden. These pumps are energy-efficient and work with a float switch that allows the pump to run only when needed.

    Advanced Air Filtration

The Santa Fe Compact 2 comes standard with a MERV-8 air filter. The air filter protects your investment and ensures that it will perform at its best for years to come. This filter should be changed between 6 months and a year, depending on your level of pollution.

    Energy Star Rated

    ENERGY STAR Rated

The Santa Fe Compact is Energy Star-rated, meaning that it is an energy-efficient choice that is good for your finances and for the environment. Products with the Energy Star label have the special distinction of being high energy-saving appliances that don't sacrifice performance, style, or quality. Choosing an Energy Star product means you get the results you want without creating pollution or consuming excess energy. The Compact produces over 4 pints of water per kilowatt-hour, resulting in high-efficiency operation that saves you money.

Used in a 600 sq.ft. basement which tends to be very humid due to surrounding ground water issues and old house. It brought level from 77% to 53% in about 20 hours and now is keeping it between 42 to 50% with no problem. I do have it at a fairly low setting, about 1/3rd into the lowest range but with several tick marks to go yet before the lowest possible setting. I adjust it slightly every so often to maintain it around 48%. Its doing an excellent job. Its warmer now but even when the basement temp was in the 50's (about 55-58 degrees) it was working well. I can see either several large drops or a little stream of water come out into the clear hose every few to several seconds. We have had rain almost every day for a month too. It was a little "fussy" to set up as it seems to work most efficiently with it elevated (I put it on the box it came with and made sure its level) and with the "trap" they recommend in the manual. The trap is nothing more than a U shape in the hose about 14 inches from where it is attached to the unit, held in that shape with a small 9 inch shock cord. That keeps some water in the hose at that spot creating a kind of air block so it works better. Considering the price and the ads about it I expect this baby to last at least ten years and, even beyond, since it should be repairable if anything goes wrong. So far, it has cost me an extra $14 this past month on my electric bill, a little less than the previous, made in China, common dehumidifier cost. (also energy star rated). We'll see how that plays out going forward.

Once You Repair a Design and Manufacturing Defect, It Works Well

After wiring a circuit in the cellar for this unit to run on and setting up a spot for it, I plugged this unit in, turned it on, and got the worst grinding sound I've ever heard from it. The unit was level and had been allowed to sit for four hours (more than enough time for the refrigerant to run into its sump).

After being able to get a hold of no one from either Sylvane or Therma-stor (the manufacturer), I violated the warranty and removed the back cover of the machine. The source of the awful grinding noise was immediately obvious. A sheet metal box containing most of the electrical controls for the unit was loose and rubbing on the radial fan in the unit. (As a side note, this control box has a mechanical hygrometer/thermometer atop it with a multitude of dip switches on it. Don't move any of the switches. They're set where they're supposed to be at the factory.) I tugged the electrical box back as far as I could, but the clearance between the fan and box was never more than 1/16" or so. However, that was enough to get rid of the interference with the fan and allow the unit to operate.

After three months of use, the electrical enclosure managed to vibrate forward and engage the fan again. Since I didn't want to completely disassemble the unit to resolve this, I braced the electrical enclosure away from the fan with a pair of foam rubber shapes cut from a "Wacky Noodle" pool toy I picked up from Dollar General for a buck-fifty. Now the electrical box can't move. So far, the unit is working reliably again. Time will tell.

If anyone is considering this dehumidifier (or is wondering how to fix one that's grinding) and would like pictures detailing the quick and easy repair, email Clutch.Drofab@GMail.com.

Comments about Santa Fe Compact 2 Dehumidifier:

We purchased this dehumidifier for our finished basement about a month ago. It is typically unused, so we don't need to keep the AC that low. We tried a dehumidifier from a big box store. It lasted only a few months, and got to be very noisy. This unit is very quiet and does a good job of removing the humidity from our entire basement (~1,700 sq. ft.). Hopefully, this unit will work efficiently and quietly for a number of years.
