  • Product Overview

The Santa Fe Compact2 Dehumidifier (Model  #4033600) is a powerful yet space-saving dehumidifier that eliminates moisture in basements and crawl spaces. With a horizontal configuration and a flow-through design, this system removes excess moisture from low-clearance crawl spaces and tight basement areas. Count on it to extract approximately 70 pints of moisture in AHAM conditions of 80 degrees F at 60% relative humidity. That's enough to cover medium-sized basements and crawl spaces measuring up to 1,800 square feet.

Why Dehumidify Your Crawl Space or Basement?

Studies show that as much as 50% of the air in your home travels up from your basement or crawl space. This air is often higher in relative humidity than the air on the upper levels of your home. It can often carry with it musty odors and symptom-triggering allergens such as mold spores, mildew, bacteria, and dust mites. Moreover, too-damp air in your crawl space or basement may damage your home's infrastructure, flooring, furniture, and electromechanical systems. That's why it is so important to keep these areas dry and clean. The Santa Fe Compact2 Dehumidifier can help you do just that.

    An Amazingly Compact System

Santa Fe Classic Dehumidifier - Made in the USAThe American-made Santa Fe Compact2 Dehumidifier measures only 12 inches tall by 12 inches wide and 21 inches deep. Never before has such a powerful dehumidifier been available in such a small package. This unit allows you to conserve your valuable crawl space and basement space while still getting the humidity control you need. When available space is particularly tight, the Compact2 is actually small enough to fit in between floor joists. Use it with the optional Hang Kit (sold separately) to suspend it in between floor joists and out of the way.

    Customized Installation and Operation

Like other Santa Fe dehumidifiers, the Compact2 is easily customizable for your basement or crawl space dehumidifying needs. Out of the box, it can be operated as a standalone dehumidifier simply by plugging it into a 115-volt outlet and routing the included gravity drain hose to a nearby drain. By purchasing a few accessories, the Compact2 can also be setup to support pumped drainage and ducted applications.

    Optional Condensate Pump

As an alternative to gravity drainage, an external condensate pump is available as an accessory. Easy to setup and use, the condensate pump (sold separately) includes a 20-foot drain hose, giving you the option to run it across longer distances to drain condensate. You can also run the drain hose upward and out through a window (provides 15 feet of vertical lift), around to a doorway, or through a drilled hole to your yard or garden. To conserve energy, the pump features a float switch that directs it to run only when needed.

    Optional Ducting Kit

A ducting kit and ducting accessories are also available. You might prefer to duct your dehumidifier if standalone operation is not possible or not practical. Popular ducting options include:

    • Duct multiple rooms to allow air to flow easily back and forth between them
    • Duct the air from one room and direct it to discharge into another room nearby
    • Run ductwork to the edges of a crawl space to force air circulation

    Setting Up A Drain Trap

Santa Fe recommends setting up a drain trap when installing any of its horizontal dehumidifiers, including the Compact2. This prevents air from moving back up through the hose and back-flowing water into the machine. This also prevents potential water leaks from the corners of each unit. It's easy to create a drain trap using the included drain hose or a separate PVC trap. Watch this video on how to create a drain trap for your Santa Fe dehumidifier to learn more.

    Additional Features

    • Simple Controls - Easily adjust the knob to set your ideal humidity level from 20 to 80% and control fan operation with a single switch.
    • 2-Stage Air Filtration - Together, a foam pre-filter and a pleated MERV-8 filter ensure efficient dehumidifying, protect the dehumidifier's internal components, and capture irritating allergens.
    • Auto Defrost - This unit operates successfully in temperatures down to 56 degrees F. Should frost form on the internal components in lower temperatures, an automatic defrost system shuts off operation and quickly melts frost so the unit can resume normal operation.
    • Auto Restart - Santa Fe dehumidifiers automatically restart following a power outage.
    • Energy Star-Qualified - Like all Santa Fe dehumidifiers, the Compact2 meets Energy Star standards for efficient and money-saving operation.
    • Quiet Operation - From 6 feet away, the Santa Fe Compact2 has a sound level of 58 to 63 decibels, which is roughly the equivalent of quiet to normal conversation.
    • Optional Casters - Adding casters to this unit helps make it more portable and easier to move. The caster kit is sold separately.

    Summary

The Santa Fe Compact2 Dehumidifier is a super-compact space-saving dehumidifier that works hard to fight damaging moisture in basements and crawl spaces up to 1,800 square feet.

Used in a 600 sq.ft. basement which tends to be very humid due to surrounding ground water issues and old house. It brought level from 77% to 53% in about 20 hours and now is keeping it between 42 to 50% with no problem. I do have it at a fairly low setting, about 1/3rd into the lowest range but with several tick marks to go yet before the lowest possible setting. I adjust it slightly every so often to maintain it around 48%. Its doing an excellent job. Its warmer now but even when the basement temp was in the 50's (about 55-58 degrees) it was working well. I can see either several large drops or a little stream of water come out into the clear hose every few to several seconds. We have had rain almost every day for a month too. It was a little "fussy" to set up as it seems to work most efficiently with it elevated (I put it on the box it came with and made sure its level) and with the "trap" they recommend in the manual. The trap is nothing more than a U shape in the hose about 14 inches from where it is attached to the unit, held in that shape with a small 9 inch shock cord. That keeps some water in the hose at that spot creating a kind of air block so it works better. Considering the price and the ads about it I expect this baby to last at least ten years and, even beyond, since it should be repairable if anything goes wrong. So far, it has cost me an extra $14 this past month on my electric bill, a little less than the previous, made in China, common dehumidifier cost. (also energy star rated). We'll see how that plays out going forward.

Once You Repair a Design and Manufacturing Defect, It Works Well

After wiring a circuit in the cellar for this unit to run on and setting up a spot for it, I plugged this unit in, turned it on, and got the worst grinding sound I've ever heard from it. The unit was level and had been allowed to sit for four hours (more than enough time for the refrigerant to run into its sump).

After being able to get a hold of no one from either Sylvane or Therma-stor (the manufacturer), I violated the warranty and removed the back cover of the machine. The source of the awful grinding noise was immediately obvious. A sheet metal box containing most of the electrical controls for the unit was loose and rubbing on the radial fan in the unit. (As a side note, this control box has a mechanical hygrometer/thermometer atop it with a multitude of dip switches on it. Don't move any of the switches. They're set where they're supposed to be at the factory.) I tugged the electrical box back as far as I could, but the clearance between the fan and box was never more than 1/16" or so. However, that was enough to get rid of the interference with the fan and allow the unit to operate.

After three months of use, the electrical enclosure managed to vibrate forward and engage the fan again. Since I didn't want to completely disassemble the unit to resolve this, I braced the electrical enclosure away from the fan with a pair of foam rubber shapes cut from a "Wacky Noodle" pool toy I picked up from Dollar General for a buck-fifty. Now the electrical box can't move. So far, the unit is working reliably again. Time will tell.

If anyone is considering this dehumidifier (or is wondering how to fix one that's grinding) and would like pictures detailing the quick and easy repair, email Clutch.Drofab@GMail.com.

Both were installed in clean encapsulated crawls space new construction home both worked for the first six to month period with scheduled filter changes . First one turned to a block on ice do to bad defrost thermostat and humidity control. The second ones fan just stayed running and noticed humity was high by watching the humidity gauge that I have in crawls space. Further investigation found that yes another bad defrost thermostat stuck in the open position, meaning the compressor would not come on. Done with these units good luck to you if you deside to purchase one of these!

My humidity is now 58%. It is still cool down there. But certainly more comfortable and I am not worried about damage to furniture or tools rusting.
The Compact 2 is a great product.
