I had a serious humidity problem in my crawlspace. The insulation around the ductwork was soggy to the point water leaked out of the low spots and caused puddles on the plastic sheet lining the ground. Mold, which I could smell as well as see, was growing on the wood joists, this in a three-year-old house! The termite inspector reported the wood was reaching 20% humidity. Obviously, something had to be done.

My house is 2500 sq. ft. on a single level and has a 4-ft. high crawl. I hired a contractor to fully seal the crawlspace and to build a platform for a dehumidifier. He recommended I purchase the Santa Fe Max Dual Dry XT because he had recently used it with good result in a similar case. After a single week, the wood humidity dropped to 12%. After 3 weeks it had dropped to 9%. The termite guy told me I needed to adjust the setting of the dehumidifier as I was actually getting too dry. This, in only one month!

Interestingly, the HVAC technician I had look at the ductwork thought I would need at least two dehumidifiers to get my crawlspace humidity under control. He was clearly thinking of department store-type dehumidifiers. The Santa Fe Max Dual XT Dehumidifier is a workhorse I don't expect to be be running all that much anymore. When it does run, it simply purrs and can't be heard in the house, even when I stand over the area where it is located. Lastly, placing the unit in my crawlspace (I rolled it across three PVC pipes Egyptian-style) to where I had the stand, setting it up (you get everything you need), and plugging it in (regular 120 AC socket) couldn't have been simpler. Needless to say, I am quite pleased with this unit.

I have owned this unit since August 2010. The first year it worked great and quickly dropped the humidity from around 70% down to 50% and easily held it there (1800 SF basement with 9ft ceilings). You can hear it running when you are in the basement but from the first floor you really couldn't hear it.
I do not run it during the winter so Shut it off in November and then turned it back on the following April (2011). The unit went on but the compressor did not engage. After discussing with customer service, I had to return the unit for warranty repairs including a new compressor. The unit Came back about 6 weeks later and worked fine for the remainder of 2011 and was turned off in November.
Turned the unit back on in April of 2012 and again it did not function. This time the compressor was working fine but no moisture was being pulled from the air. Spoke to customer service and after troubleshooting a few things with me determined that the unit needed to be serviced again. Since moving the 175 pound unit was so hard, I decided to have a local HVAC expert take a look. They found that the refrigerant was low recharged the unit ($250). The unit ran fine for the remainder of 2012 and was turned off in November.
Turned on the unit in April of 2013 and the unit did not pull any moisture from the air. Went straight to the same local repair service and this time there was evidence of a significant leak in the evaporator coil. If I can get the part from Thermastor, he can do the work for around $500 but at this point I am ready to give up on it. I will try to get Therma-stor to provide a full replacement but I am not optimistic.

Comments about Santa Fe Max Dry Dual XT Dehumidifier:

Bought the Santa Fe Max Dry Dual XT Dehumidifier for our large basement several week ago. So far, we are very pleased with it. Prior to using this dehumidifier, our basement's relative humidity was 65% in the summer. Within one day of turning this unit on, it dropped the relative humidity down to 50%. This is where I am keeping it. The unit is quiet for its size and effectiveness. The rotary humidistat control seems spot on. I have it set at 6 o'clock, and it stablizes at 50%! Very nice. We are keeping the fan at contant on to get the basement air circulated. The only cons that I can think of is that the drain hole is too low for connecting to a condensate pump. I have to prop up the unit with two layers of paver bricks. Also, the drain hose is too loose. Without a hose clamp, it leaks. So, the hose clamp is a must, but it is not included. I had to buy one from Home Depot. As for long term reliability, I'll have to see whether this thing lasts more than a couple of years. After all, I am paying more to buy American Made. I hope it lasts longer than the disposal units that are made by the Chinese. Even with a warranty, shipping this behemoth in for service is prohibitive.

Comments about Santa Fe Max Dry Dual XT Dehumidifier:

House located on bluff of mountain and basement has a lot of exposed limestone. With heavy rain this summer the ground has been saturated and this has caused my basement area to be extremely wet/humid. I have it set between normal and drier. It has yet to shut off. However, basement is much drier than it was prior to putting the unit down there. Only think I don't like about this unit is the gravity drain versus a built in pump.

Does a great job, wish it took less of a footprint but is made well and seems quite sturdy. Loud but maybe they all are. Make sure you set up the trap (very easy) Not sure what this will do to elec bill but seems rated best in class.

Comments about Santa Fe Max Dry Dual XT Dehumidifier:

I purchased this product after a thorough search of available options. I have around a 4,000 sq ft home and I wanted a unit that could ultimately dehumidify the whole house, especially the basement and when the main AC unit doesn't run that often like in the spring/fall months.

The unit arrived undamaged and was heavy, I believe around 160 lbs so it took a couple of people to get it down the basement. I have the unit connected to a drain in the basement and plugged it in and was good to go. I've had no issues since installing it a few weeks ago. In order to dehumidify the whole house, I leave my AC unit fan on to recirculate the air everywhere.

The house has never been more comfortable and according to the free hygrometer I received from Sylvane, the relatively humidity ranges from 40-50% through the whole house, which is what I hoped to achieve. It's amazing to just watch how much water this unit actually removes. At first, I thought I oversized it, but it appears that it is sized properly because it does run a good amount of the time. My only hope is that for the amount of money spent, it works for at least 10+ years.

Great unit: resolved my humidity problem in newly constructed unfinished basement. Surprisingly quiet for its size. HVAC pro suggested mini split system but this was the right call. 1 con: the pump sits below the unit- rendering the castings useless and the unit immobile.
