  • Product Overview

The Santa Fe Max Dry Dual XT dehumidifier (model #4031470) is the perfect solution for removing excess moisture from large crawl spaces and basements. At AHAM rating conditions (80°F at 60% humidity), the large-capacity unit removes up to 155 pints of moisture per day and covers up to 3,600 square feet. At complete saturation (100% relative humidity), the dehumidifier’s capacity doubles to an impressive 310 pints per day.

In order to achieve the performance level of this unit, you would need to purchase multiple off-the-shelf dehumidifiers, which would in turn lead to increased electricity costs and elevated energy usage. This Santa Fe dehumidifier is also far more earth-friendly than other units because it carries the Energy Star rating and uses a special type of refrigerant that will not contribute to ozone depletion. The Santa Fe Max Dry is the most energy-efficient large-capacity residential dehumidifier on the market.

    How It Works

Santa Fe Max Dry Dual XT Dehumidifier - Made in the USA

The Santa Fe Max Dry Dual XT dehumidifier uses a CFC-free refrigerant to draw in a stream of warm, humid air at the front of the unit and pass it through 1 of 2 evaporator coils. At this coil, the air temperature is cooled to below its dew point, condensing moisture in the process and dripping the water into the unit’s reservoir or, if equipped, a hose for draining. Following this process, the now cooled and dried air passes through a second coil where it is reheated and blown out into the room or crawl space. This Santa Fe dehumidifier performs dual-air distribution by blowing the reheated air out into the surrounding space from each side of the unit. This results in quicker and more efficient dehumidification and a well-balanced humidity level.

    Easy Humidity Control

When running in the proper conditions, the Santa Fe Max Dry Dual XT maintains 45 to 50% relative humidity, as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency. This is the ideal range for creating a comfortably dry, mold-free, and odor-free living or storage space. For easy humidity control, the unit features 3 humidity settings – dry, normal, and humid – to help you navigate toward the best level. Simply move the humidity control knob to your desired setting. The dehumidifier will run intermittently to maintain the set humidity level.

    Designed To Fit Your Needs

This crawl space and basement dehumidifier features a horizontal design that helps it fit easily into narrow and tight spaces. Place the unit in a finished basement, an unfinished basement, or on open ground in your crawl space. Because of its shorter footprint, the dehumidifier can be installed wherever it is convenient.

    Setting Up A Drain Trap

Santa Fe recommends setting up a drain trap when installing any of its horizontal dehumidifiers, including the Max Dry Dual XT. This prevents air from moving back up through the hose and backflowing water into the machine. This also prevents potential water leaks from the corners of each unit. It's easy to create a drain trap using the included drain hose or a separate PVC trap. Watch this video on how to create a drain trap for your Santa Fe dehumidifier to learn more.

    Ducting Options

There are several options for ducting this Santa Fe dehumidifier for operation in a number of spaces at once. This also allows you to hide the unit in a storage space. Inlet (12-in. ducting) and outlet (10-in. ducting) duct accessory kits are available to suit your needs. Setup configurations include:

    • Operating the unit without ducting to dehumidify in an open space.
    • Ducting multiple rooms to allow air to flow simultaneously.
    • Ducting one room and directing the unit to discharge air into another room.
    • Running ductwork to the far ends of a crawl space to force air circulation.

    Condensate Pump Option

If the gravity drain option is not aligned with your drainage needs, a condensate pump kit is also available. This kit will give you the option of running the drain hose upward and out through a window or around a doorway to your yard or garden. The condensate pump is energy-efficient and works with a float switch that directs the pump to run only when necessary.

    Additional Features

This American-made dehumidifier stands above other dehumidifiers when it comes to the amount of moisture it can absorb from the air. In addition to its high-capacity and low temperature operation, special features include:

    • Dual-Air Distribution – This patent-pending capability enables the unit to blow dehumidified air out from vents located on both sides of the unit, which results in more balanced humidity and air circulation.
    • Fan Control – A fan control switch allows for continuous fan operation or operation only when the unit is actively removing moisture from the air.
    • MERV-11 Air Filter – A pleated MERV-11 air filter cleans the air as it enters the unit. This filter captures particles as small as 1 micron in size and helps the dehumidifier works more efficiently.
    • Gravity Drainage – Simply attach the included 8-foot drain hose to the unit and route to a drain.
    • Low Temperature Operation – The Max Dry Dual XT operates efficiently in temperatures down to 56 degrees F and up to 95 degrees F.
    • Free Digital Humidity Gauge By Mail– The Max Dry Dual XT Dehumidifier comes with a mail-in certificate for a free digital humidity gauge.

    Summary

The Santa Fe Max Dry Dual XT Dehumidifier keeps your basement or crawl space mold- and mildew-free, eliminating 155 pints of moisture per day at AHAM conditions.

I had a serious humidity problem in my crawlspace. The insulation around the ductwork was soggy to the point water leaked out of the low spots and caused puddles on the plastic sheet lining the ground. Mold, which I could smell as well as see, was growing on the wood joists, this in a three-year-old house! The termite inspector reported the wood was reaching 20% humidity. Obviously, something had to be done.

My house is 2500 sq. ft. on a single level and has a 4-ft. high crawl. I hired a contractor to fully seal the crawlspace and to build a platform for a dehumidifier. He recommended I purchase the Santa Fe Max Dual Dry XT because he had recently used it with good result in a similar case. After a single week, the wood humidity dropped to 12%. After 3 weeks it had dropped to 9%. The termite guy told me I needed to adjust the setting of the dehumidifier as I was actually getting too dry. This, in only one month!

Interestingly, the HVAC technician I had look at the ductwork thought I would need at least two dehumidifiers to get my crawlspace humidity under control. He was clearly thinking of department store-type dehumidifiers. The Santa Fe Max Dual XT Dehumidifier is a workhorse I don't expect to be be running all that much anymore. When it does run, it simply purrs and can't be heard in the house, even when I stand over the area where it is located. Lastly, placing the unit in my crawlspace (I rolled it across three PVC pipes Egyptian-style) to where I had the stand, setting it up (you get everything you need), and plugging it in (regular 120 AC socket) couldn't have been simpler. Needless to say, I am quite pleased with this unit.

I have owned this unit since August 2010. The first year it worked great and quickly dropped the humidity from around 70% down to 50% and easily held it there (1800 SF basement with 9ft ceilings). You can hear it running when you are in the basement but from the first floor you really couldn't hear it.
I do not run it during the winter so Shut it off in November and then turned it back on the following April (2011). The unit went on but the compressor did not engage. After discussing with customer service, I had to return the unit for warranty repairs including a new compressor. The unit Came back about 6 weeks later and worked fine for the remainder of 2011 and was turned off in November.
Turned the unit back on in April of 2012 and again it did not function. This time the compressor was working fine but no moisture was being pulled from the air. Spoke to customer service and after troubleshooting a few things with me determined that the unit needed to be serviced again. Since moving the 175 pound unit was so hard, I decided to have a local HVAC expert take a look. They found that the refrigerant was low recharged the unit ($250). The unit ran fine for the remainder of 2012 and was turned off in November.
Turned on the unit in April of 2013 and the unit did not pull any moisture from the air. Went straight to the same local repair service and this time there was evidence of a significant leak in the evaporator coil. If I can get the part from Thermastor, he can do the work for around $500 but at this point I am ready to give up on it. I will try to get Therma-stor to provide a full replacement but I am not optimistic.

Comments about Santa Fe Max Dry Dual XT Dehumidifier:

Was purchased in fall of 2011 to remove moisture from our basement. It worked great for the first fall. We shut it off during the winter and turned it back on in the spring of 2012. We noticed that the drain line was always dry. Called the company we purchased it from and they shipped us a refurbished replacement unit, but were only given the balance of the first machine's warranty which was only a month. The second unit failed shortly after the warranty period ended and we are now stuck with a moist, stinky basement and a broken, expensive dehumidifier! The HVAC company that just looked at it said that there are pin holes throughout the copper coils. Expensive to fix! We won't be fixing it. We are going to try a competitors product. I highly DISCOURAGE anyone from buying this product!

I've had water virtually raining off my ductwork in the crawlspace of my 3 year old home. Humidity level in the house is sky high. I installed 20 mil plastic under 1/2 of the crawlspace so far and just hooked up my dehumidifier last night. Less than a day later about 2/3 of my ductwork is totally dry. I just hope it keeps up and lasts.

Comments about Santa Fe Max Dry Dual XT Dehumidifier:

Bought the Santa Fe Max Dry Dual XT Dehumidifier for our large basement several week ago. So far, we are very pleased with it. Prior to using this dehumidifier, our basement's relative humidity was 65% in the summer. Within one day of turning this unit on, it dropped the relative humidity down to 50%. This is where I am keeping it. The unit is quiet for its size and effectiveness. The rotary humidistat control seems spot on. I have it set at 6 o'clock, and it stablizes at 50%! Very nice. We are keeping the fan at contant on to get the basement air circulated. The only cons that I can think of is that the drain hole is too low for connecting to a condensate pump. I have to prop up the unit with two layers of paver bricks. Also, the drain hose is too loose. Without a hose clamp, it leaks. So, the hose clamp is a must, but it is not included. I had to buy one from Home Depot. As for long term reliability, I'll have to see whether this thing lasts more than a couple of years. After all, I am paying more to buy American Made. I hope it lasts longer than the disposal units that are made by the Chinese. Even with a warranty, shipping this behemoth in for service is prohibitive.

House located on bluff of mountain and basement has a lot of exposed limestone. With heavy rain this summer the ground has been saturated and this has caused my basement area to be extremely wet/humid. I have it set between normal and drier. It has yet to shut off. However, basement is much drier than it was prior to putting the unit down there. Only think I don't like about this unit is the gravity drain versus a built in pump.
