I bought this dehumidifier to keep my basement workshop dry. My application is challenging because the environment can be dusty sometimes (from woodworking), which can clog up the evaporator of unfiltered units. My understanding is that the wood dust is corrosive, which might explain why my previous units only lasted about 2 years each.
The Santa Fe Compact has a nice filter system which should help keep the evaporator coil clean. I also like the ducting feature - I use this to pull air from the cleanest corner of the workshop and blow the dry air into the dustier part of the workshop. This helps with air circulation and should also help protect the evaporator from dust. I hang my dehumidifier from the ceiling joists, which keeps it out of the way and makes it easy to gravity drain the water to a floor drain. The hang kit is sturdy and includes some rubber bits that reduce vibration from being transmitted to the joists (keeps the noise level down).
When I bought this unit, I was impresssed that both Sylvane and ThermaStor (parent company of Santa Fe) had folks that answered the phone and were actually able to answer technical questions. It's unfortunate, but this kind of basic customer service is getting rare. I was also happy to find out that the Santa Fe Compact is made in the USA; I really resent sending my money overseas, especially in this tough economy. So far the only quirk I have noticed with this dehumidifier is that it sees to cycle on and off more frequently than its predecesors. Now that the humidity level is stable, it runs for about 1 to 2 minutes and then shuts off for about 3 to 4 minutes and repeats. I hope that this frequent cycling does not have any impact on the durability. So far though, it is able to maintain a very steady humidity level in my workshop. It has been running now for about a month.

After wiring a circuit in the cellar for this unit to run on and setting up a spot for it, I plugged this unit in, turned it on, and got the worst grinding sound I've ever heard from it. The unit was level and had been allowed to sit for four hours (more than enough time for the refrigerant to run into its sump).
After being able to get a hold of no one from either Sylvane or Therma-stor (the manufacturer), I violated the warranty and removed the back cover of the machine. The source of the awful grinding noise was immediately obvious. A sheet metal box containing most of the electrical controls for the unit was loose and rubbing on the radial fan in the unit. (As a side note, this control box has a mechanical hygrometer/thermometer atop it with a multitude of dip switches on it. Don't move any of the switches. They're set where they're supposed to be at the factory.) I tugged the electrical box back as far as I could, but the clearance between the fan and box was never more than 1/16" or so. However, that was enough to get rid of the interference with the fan and allow the unit to operate.
After three months of use, the electrical enclosure managed to vibrate forward and engage the fan again. Since I didn't want to completely disassemble the unit to resolve this, I braced the electrical enclosure away from the fan with a pair of foam rubber shapes cut from a "Wacky Noodle" pool toy I picked up from Dollar General for a buck-fifty. Now the electrical box can't move. So far, the unit is working reliably again. Time will tell.
If anyone is considering this dehumidifier (or is wondering how to fix one that's grinding) and would like pictures detailing the quick and easy repair, email Clutch.Drofab@GMail.com.

Comments about Santa Fe Compact 2 Dehumidifier:
I bought a home that was built in 1925 with a 2 foot crawlspace. The crawlspace is musty and moisture does exist causing a musty and mildew type smell. The smell creeps up into the house. I'm pretty sure the unit it is working because the smell has been reduced greatly. You can hear the unit slightly from the floor up. It's not a bad noise at all, and you only really hear it from the room/s the unit sits under. My unit is near the bedroom, so actually the low hum puts me to sleep. When installing the unit, I opt to run a drain line with a trap to an existing drain line, and installed a 15AMP receptacle with its own circuit. The first week of use, it did leak around the outlet of the unit. Make sure you use plenty of Teflon tape around the threads of the connector, and a hose clamp around the hose (clamp not included). That solves that problem. Overall, I'm happy with the product. For the price, I hope it give me years of good service.

I used to use a small 50 pint dehumidifier in my basement but the humidity and a bit of a smell started and it was clear it was not going to do the job.
It is a decent size basement and there are 2 crawlspaces as well. I thought about running 2 more small ones in other areas but getting drains there was problematic.
I talked to a friend and he had a SaniDry unit but it was expensive and a franchise item. I then discovered that Therma-Stor was also producing the Santa Fe and picked the compact one.
I have installed it in my utility area and used the ducting kit to connect it to the finished area and started running it with doors open. 12 hours later humidity in my crawlspace was down 9% and is varying between 48 and 51 3 days later.
I am going to install some air returns grilles between the 3 spaces and see if it is the same; unfortunately I don't have louver doors and will be expensive to replace 2 of them.
I had some concerns about noise levels but I am happy to say it is not any worse, it is mainly air noise. The fact that is running in the utility room also helps so is actually better than before.

I just ordered this product. We received the product in three business days with free shipping. When we uppacked and put all parts together with great ease. We tested before taking it to the crawlspace. It is definitely quiet, efficient. In just a few minutes, the water came out to the bucket and the humidity dropped from 85% to 35%. We were very impressed. I actually ordered this product and have ProClean install it. The workers have been installing other products for customers. They were all impressed and will buy for their own home use. My reason to buy this product is twofold: (1) filter only needs to be changed every 6 months instead one month; 5-yr warranty, which signifies that the company is standing by their products and the Sylvane is confident in selling the product with 5-yr service plan. I have reviewed other products of similar functionality. This is the only product with such a warranty. The shipping was faster than expected. I ordered register that was not needed. I was able to cancelled with just one email and got a quick response with verification. In addition, the company was also verify my identity after my order was submitted online before processing, which was due to the difference between billing address and shipping address. I appreciated this as well. When I ordered again for a hanging kit and filter, I was able to be authenticated online with certain information that is unlikely known to a hacker. I like how the product looks even though I use it in crawlspace. I will be able to write again after I have used the product for certain time. So far, I have not found anything to pick on. I consider myself a critical consumer. I also appreciate the grouping of the accessaries to the product that makes purchase easier and bring awareness of additional items that customers may need. Product specifics can be more detailed. For example, 8' hose should also add diameter data if I needed to buy a longer one or replace it.

However, some of the optional accessaries do not have images.

Comments about Santa Fe Compact 2 Dehumidifier:
Several moths ago, I noticed a little bit of mold growing in my basement. I immediately called to get that checked out at which point, I was advised to purchase a dehumidifier, not just one of the run of the mill ones that you get from Home Depot or Lowes, but a professional grade one that can handle large spaces, in this case about 1,000 sq. ft. As luck would have it, I had a neighbor who had moisture problems in their basement and they had done tons of research to determine the best, most efficient, and cost effective dehumidifiers (Santa Fe). Based on his recommendation, as well as my own verifying research, I set out to purchase a Sante Fe dehumidifier to dry out my basement so I could set the stage to remediate the mold problem.
As anyone reading this will likely know, there are numerous Sante Fe models and choosing the most appropriate one was the first challenge. One of the key requirements for me was to be able to hide the system in another room while being able to vent it to another room. In addition, I needed the system to be able to accommodate a 1,000 sq. ft. room and drain into a central line, removing the painful need to remove bucket loads of water daily. After reviewing the various products and having several, very helpful, phone conversations with Sylvane, I determined that the Sante Fe Compact was going to be the model for me. Outside of meeting my basic requirements, the best benefit I saw with this system was the ability to hang it between my floor joists. This allowed me to get it up and out of the way while venting the system from closer to the ceiling and adding return ducts low to the ground.
As for my overall satisfaction of the product, I have been extremely happy with the Compact. It is a little loud but it has been extremely effective in reducing the humidity levels in my basement. For example, prior to installation, and to set a baseline of how well the system works, I tested out the humidity levels in the basement and noticed that I was close to 70% at various times throughout the day. Post installation, I have been able to keep it consistently down to close to 45%, a level where mold can no longer grow.
I was also very satisfied with the customer service of Sylvane. They were extremely helpful in the selection processes and were very efficient in the processing of the order. I actually received the product two days earlier than expected which was great. I would recommend them to others and would use them again myself.

I decided to search for a more robust and durable dehumidification solution after I had two different brands of brand new portable residential dehumidifiers (comfort aire and another I can't recall any more) die on me within roughly two to three years of usage each.
The humidity in the finished part of my basement is usually high, somewhere in the vicinity of 70 percent, especially in the summer in North Carolina. The space that I use the Santa Fe compact in is roughly 700 square feet. I am trying a few different locations to figure out what works best for me. I currently have the new unit located around a corner of one end of space on top of the refrigerator. So far, It has done a terrific job of drying out the whole area in very short order.
The Santa Fe Compact has quickly gotten my humidity back to a reasonable level. The unit is indeed compact and seems very sturdily constructed.
My biggest complaint about the Santa Fe compact is that the power switch and manual humidistat control are not independent. Right now I have someone living in the finished basement area and the unit is to turned off to prevent disruptions from noise during the night. This requires setting the humidity level on the unit back to where it was previously each time it is turned on. A manual power on/off switch independent of humidity control would be a much more preferable solution.
Overall I am very satisfied with this product, assuming of course that it greatly outlasts the cheaper units I have used in the past.
Comments about Santa Fe Compact 2 Dehumidifier:
It's been working well for a couple of months in my cool, damp basement. It's a bit loud, but I don't think it's any worse than other dehumidifiers I've had, and to me it has less of the sort of low frequency rumble (esp. when it cycles on) I've found distracting with other dehumidifiers.
It sometimes seems to come on for fairly short cycles--less than a minute--which is something I've also seen with other humidifiers. Seems a bit odd (too little hysteresis?) but maybe normal.

Unit is well packed, and arrived with no issues by UPS two days after order. Easy to set up. Dryed my finished basement in 1 day. I've owned the house for 20 years and have used small retail units over the years. This unit is magnatudes better. Noise is similiar to retail units. Needs a trap else the water doesn't drain properly. The real benefit I see is good performance at low temperatures (I used to have to keep room heat on to effect dehydration).
