I bought this dehumidifier to keep my basement workshop dry. My application is challenging because the environment can be dusty sometimes (from woodworking), which can clog up the evaporator of unfiltered units. My understanding is that the wood dust is corrosive, which might explain why my previous units only lasted about 2 years each.
The Santa Fe Compact has a nice filter system which should help keep the evaporator coil clean. I also like the ducting feature - I use this to pull air from the cleanest corner of the workshop and blow the dry air into the dustier part of the workshop. This helps with air circulation and should also help protect the evaporator from dust. I hang my dehumidifier from the ceiling joists, which keeps it out of the way and makes it easy to gravity drain the water to a floor drain. The hang kit is sturdy and includes some rubber bits that reduce vibration from being transmitted to the joists (keeps the noise level down).
When I bought this unit, I was impresssed that both Sylvane and ThermaStor (parent company of Santa Fe) had folks that answered the phone and were actually able to answer technical questions. It's unfortunate, but this kind of basic customer service is getting rare. I was also happy to find out that the Santa Fe Compact is made in the USA; I really resent sending my money overseas, especially in this tough economy. So far the only quirk I have noticed with this dehumidifier is that it sees to cycle on and off more frequently than its predecesors. Now that the humidity level is stable, it runs for about 1 to 2 minutes and then shuts off for about 3 to 4 minutes and repeats. I hope that this frequent cycling does not have any impact on the durability. So far though, it is able to maintain a very steady humidity level in my workshop. It has been running now for about a month.

After wiring a circuit in the cellar for this unit to run on and setting up a spot for it, I plugged this unit in, turned it on, and got the worst grinding sound I've ever heard from it. The unit was level and had been allowed to sit for four hours (more than enough time for the refrigerant to run into its sump).
After being able to get a hold of no one from either Sylvane or Therma-stor (the manufacturer), I violated the warranty and removed the back cover of the machine. The source of the awful grinding noise was immediately obvious. A sheet metal box containing most of the electrical controls for the unit was loose and rubbing on the radial fan in the unit. (As a side note, this control box has a mechanical hygrometer/thermometer atop it with a multitude of dip switches on it. Don't move any of the switches. They're set where they're supposed to be at the factory.) I tugged the electrical box back as far as I could, but the clearance between the fan and box was never more than 1/16" or so. However, that was enough to get rid of the interference with the fan and allow the unit to operate.
After three months of use, the electrical enclosure managed to vibrate forward and engage the fan again. Since I didn't want to completely disassemble the unit to resolve this, I braced the electrical enclosure away from the fan with a pair of foam rubber shapes cut from a "Wacky Noodle" pool toy I picked up from Dollar General for a buck-fifty. Now the electrical box can't move. So far, the unit is working reliably again. Time will tell.
If anyone is considering this dehumidifier (or is wondering how to fix one that's grinding) and would like pictures detailing the quick and easy repair, email Clutch.Drofab@GMail.com.

This unit far exceeded my expectations on quality
Comments about Santa Fe Compact 2 Dehumidifier:
This little guy works as advertised. It works well even at cooler temps, right now my crawl space is at 53 degrees and it is still pumping water. The fan is great too because if you have a larger crawl space then you can really get the airflow, not to mention it will hopefully clean out all of the mold spores that were in the air. And yes it is efficient, so it does not run all the time.
I also have a fairly small entry to the crawl space and basically if you can squeeze into the crawl space, then this machine can too.
I have two critiques of this product first it is a bit on the loud side. Second, it is fragile and the first unit I received was not functioning, which of course you won't know until you have gone through all the trouble of installing it. Then, in order to have your exchange processed you have to charge your credit card for a second unit, so I am still waiting to be refunded. And don't be discouraged if the first one doesn't work because these things are great!
Comments about Santa Fe Compact 2 Dehumidifier:
This product is absolutely wonderful. After a hit run driver took out a fire hydrant near our house and completely swamped our crawl space and lower level, the smell became unbearable. Within a week of installing the Santa Fe Compact our house smelled normal again. Within two weeks it was better then before and the clay under our house is starting to dry out and even crack. This little thing lives up to all of it's claims.
Comments about Santa Fe Compact 2 Dehumidifier:
About a year after construction was completed on a new mountain home the owner discovered some moisture on two of the four concrete foundation walls. After we determined that we had a condensation issue we started researching for a reasonably price dehumidifier. The Santa Fe dehumidifier was just what we needed to take care of a moisture issue that we had in a crawlspace.
Comments about Santa Fe Compact 2 Dehumidifier:
had my 500 sq ft crawlspace encapsulated a few months ago and opted to buy the compact model over the advance (larger) model. this is an easy to use and non-complicated unit and is made in USA and well built, all metal. i don't like digital/computer controls other brands offer, they tend to be less reliable in long run. but you must kind of get used to manual humidity control of this unit to know where to set it while comparing to a separate humidistat (can get for $10-20 at local hardware store).
took a week to get setting of my preference, checking on humidity level every other day, but now has worked flawlessly. powerful unit should work in much larger areas than mine and is average for noise level. runs for 15 minutes every other hour or so this fall and winter (which has been warmer and more humid than normal) and appears to add approx $5-10 to my elec bill. very happy with unit and will make my crawlspace dry as a bone if i wanted- but i keep it at around 55% humidity and seems perfect. no condensation, mold etc.....

This product is working very efficiently and my crawl space is much drier resulting less mold and cleaner air.
Comments about Santa Fe Compact 2 Dehumidifier:
The humidity in my crawl dropped from 98% to75% in the first 36 hours. After only two more weeks it's down to 55%. Great product. Well made and easy to install. The people at Sylvane were very helpful and wonderful to work with, they were happy to answer my many questions.I highly recommend this product and Sylvane.
Comments about Santa Fe Compact 2 Dehumidifier:
The on line videos of Sylvane dehumidifiers was very helpful and the ordering process with Sylvane was easy. The Santa Fe came sooner than the 4 -5 day promised time. Unfortunately, when it arrived and I hooked it up it did not work. I called cust svc and as soon as I had it packed up and UPS picked it up Sylvane sent a replacement. The new one arrived in 2 days and this one worked great. My 1100 sq ft basement was 90% humidity and in 3 days it was 70%. It took 5 days and the humidity was down to 60%. Fan motor is quieter than expected; unit is doing a good job.

Comments about Santa Fe Compact 2 Dehumidifier:
I read many reviews of this product and decided to try it for my home. I have been very pleased with the results to date. The old dehumidifier was a store bought Whrilpool unit that lasted 10 years, and I could not find anything to match its quality in the store now.
The new Santa Fe is running nicely and is actually quieter than I hoped. You do know that it is running, but I have to stop and listen to hear it at the top of the stairs to the basement. The old unit you knew when it was running. There is a large crawl space under our house and the house always had an odor. While there is still a slight odor, it is diminishing as the new unit is running. The old unit never managed to do that. It has only been several weeks using the Santa Fe but I am quite pleased so far.
