I had a serious humidity problem in my crawlspace. The insulation around the ductwork was soggy to the point water leaked out of the low spots and caused puddles on the plastic sheet lining the ground. Mold, which I could smell as well as see, was growing on the wood joists, this in a three-year-old house! The termite inspector reported the wood was reaching 20% humidity. Obviously, something had to be done.
My house is 2500 sq. ft. on a single level and has a 4-ft. high crawl. I hired a contractor to fully seal the crawlspace and to build a platform for a dehumidifier. He recommended I purchase the Santa Fe Max Dual Dry XT because he had recently used it with good result in a similar case. After a single week, the wood humidity dropped to 12%. After 3 weeks it had dropped to 9%. The termite guy told me I needed to adjust the setting of the dehumidifier as I was actually getting too dry. This, in only one month!
Interestingly, the HVAC technician I had look at the ductwork thought I would need at least two dehumidifiers to get my crawlspace humidity under control. He was clearly thinking of department store-type dehumidifiers. The Santa Fe Max Dual XT Dehumidifier is a workhorse I don't expect to be be running all that much anymore. When it does run, it simply purrs and can't be heard in the house, even when I stand over the area where it is located. Lastly, placing the unit in my crawlspace (I rolled it across three PVC pipes Egyptian-style) to where I had the stand, setting it up (you get everything you need), and plugging it in (regular 120 AC socket) couldn't have been simpler. Needless to say, I am quite pleased with this unit.

The first unit I had leaked water all over the floor, the rep for the company said they had units with faulty defrost controls. I certainly did not get a notice of a recall, seemed they were just waiting for failures to replace them with no regard for the damage and lost time the customer would incur. Second unit after a month seems to be doing the same thing!

Comments about Santa Fe Max Dry Dual XT Dehumidifier:
Our second home is 75 feet from the water on an island in Maine. The 1100 square foot basement is always cooler than the outside air and the basement walls always have sweat except in dead of winter. I have always wanted to reduce the moisture level but the small dehumidifier we tried years ago never had a chance. I bought the Max Dry because of its effiency and super capacity. I plugged it in on Tuesday and by Wednesday the difference was startling. The humidity dropped from 90 percent to 75 percent overnight and the reduction continued through Saturday when the machine had sucked the excess moisture out of the wood structure and concrete and started cycling at 50 percent. I am ecstatic. I am now planning for a workshop in what was a dungeon.

Comments about Santa Fe Max Dry Dual XT Dehumidifier:
I received my Santa Fe with a clean bill of health and very quickly. I think I received the tracking number in an email the same day that the unit arrived. The unit was packed well and looked to be in good repair. It only gets better. The unit is made well. Insulation is lining the interior of the sheet metal and covers for both sides of the filter are well made. When placing this 133 (or so) pound unit in my crawl space, I made one minor error in my height calculation. I didn't take into account all the pipes hanging below the floor joists. Fortunately I was able to slide it into to place without much too much trouble, but certainly something to consider.
The greatest surprise occurred when I turned it on. The unit is very quiet and works like a champ. I was pulling the approximate amount of water out of the crawl as stated in the specs as I had a virtual rain forest down in my crawl. It has dried up my space very quickly. I have the adapter to attach the flex pipe, but I haven't done it yet, and it seems to work well as it is. I may attach the source flex pipe at some time to increase the range of circulation, but the humidity checker I received free is far away from the unit and is reading with the acceptable range.
I have a 3500 square foot crawl and this unit is solid and works like a horse. I would certainly recommend this unit for all large spaces. Prior to the units arrival, I did place 6mm from wall to wall and sealed the vents up as well.
The new 6mm plastic also made sliding the unit into place very, very easy (with one other helper).
Enjoy!

Comments about Santa Fe Max Dry Dual XT Dehumidifier:
Purchased this dehumidifier after online research and then after a discussion with Sylvane personnel by phone. I have 3600 sq. ft. to dehumidify and the Max Dry was reccommended. It was explained that once a certain humidity level was reached a larger capacity machine would be more economical in the long run, as it would not have to run as long or often to maintain the humidity level. This has turned out to be very true. I set my machine at 50% in a newly constructed basement. It ran continuously for about 3 days and now runs very little. It has worked flawlessly. I would highly reccommend this product and Sylvane. Call Sylvane directly and follow their reccommendations.
