We live in North Carolina and recently purchased a 2500 sq foot single story house. While remodeling we discovered a very severe moisture problem in the crawl space. There was high humidity that caused a great deal of condensation and moisture. The crawl space did have a vapor barrier but it was not enough.
I initially tried a small 70 pint/day unit from the local home store and it didn't significantly reduce humidity. We sought advice and bids for solutions from moisture contractors and several of them recommended that we seal our crawl space vents and get a commercial dehumidifier. They recommended the Santa Fe Advance.
I researched the Santa Fe Advance and was initially confused as to why it was better than the 70 pint per day unit we had earlier that cost about 8 times less. The Santa Fe Advance was rated at 90 pints per day. Sylvane's compare feature on their website helped to answer this question. The inexpensive big box dehumidifiers publish Capacity at Saturation (optimal conditions for removing water) vs. Capacity at AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers). Capacity at AHAM simulates realistic and typeica conditions (80 degrees F and 60% relative humidity). If you use Sylvane's compare feature you will see both capacity ratings. The Santa Fe Advance is actually rated at 90 pints at Capacity at AHAM and 180 pints at Capacity at Saturation. The big box units will be around 30-35 pints when rated with Capacity at AHAM.
Installation was easy and the unit has been running for several months now. I sealed my vents as part of my installation. I tapped the drain line into my AC condensation discharge line. The Santa Fe Advance is in the middle of my crawl space. I have 3 remote humidity sensors in my crawl space. My current configuration is unvented (intake and discharge are at the unit) and there is a big humidity variance/gradient from the center of the crawl space to the extremities. I have to keep my unit set in the 30% range to keep the extremities in the high 50% range - we've recently had 100+ degree days with high humidity and the system worked well.
I wanted to see how the unit performed unvented before configured the vents. I am going to order and install the vent kit. This should eliminate the high humidity variance / gradient between crawl space sections. I will experiment with intake and discharge positions. Most likely, I will put the intake and discharge vents on opposite extremities.
So far, I have been very happy with my purchase.

Comments about Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier:
I put the dehumidifier in my crawlspace and it dried it out really well.
Comments about Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier:
I had been told the last few years during my termite inspection that I might need to check into getting a dehumidifier for my crawlspace due to some minor mold. I called on someone who specializes in crawlspace issues to give me an overview of things they saw that might correct my problem.
Their first request was get a dehumidifier and second to take care of some very simple landscaping issues of which they gave me a very inflated price. I took care of my landscape concerns myself and inquired as to which dehumidifier they would sell me, they told me the Santa Fe Advance would be their choice. I also inquired with the pest control company that I deal with and found out later also installs dehumidifiers the brand they recommend and got the same answer.
So, I started looking online and found Sylvane to be highly recommended. I called and was helped by a very nice person who also answered a few questions that I had concerning installation. I received the Santa Fe Advance dehumidifier in a prompt amount of time (less than 5 days). The product was easily installed and has been running great. My concern of picking a quality dehumidifier was eased with knowing that it is very popular with contractors who are in the business of installing dehumidifiers.
It runs very quietly. When it is running I cannot really distinguish it from the fridge or the freezer or the a/c. I have been very happy with my purchase and Sylvane. I will be dealing with Sylvane on any future purchases I might make.
Comments about Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier:
Installed the unit in my 2500 square foot crawl space a couple of weeks ago and it works great. Setting it at 50% RH (similar to the video on Sylvane web site) keeps everything in the 50 - 60 RH range, in the crawl space and in the house.
I mounted the unit on cement blocks so I could get enough height to drain to the existing A/C condensation pump.
With Jan weather in Myrtle Beach, where I live, the unit will typically run for a 10 to 15 minutes, about every other hour to keep the humidity in check, which is not very much. Summer may be a different story.
Before I installed the unit I purhased a Meade thermo/humidistat with 3 sensors plus the base unit. This allows me to monitor both ends of the crawl space, outside and inside the house.
The humidity in Myrtle Beach will move the full range in an average day (50% to 90%). Some studies show that the outside environment has the biggest effect on the inside humidity. But in any case, the Santa Fe keeps things normalized and where you want it.
My crawl space has a 4 and 6 mil clear plastic liner that goes up the walls about a foot and is sealed to the concrete block. I also put insulation (styrofoam) over the vent openings in the block. So both the humidity and temp stay in a fairly tight range. The temp stays in a tight range because the heat pump furnace and duct work is in the crawl space
One of the reasons I went for the Santa Fe is that a national basement and crawl space company uses the same unit with a different name, plus the reviews on the Sylvane web site were very informative and convincing. The unit came in 3 days and UPS freight even put it in the garage for my wife. Thanks UPS.
Since the Santa Fe has no handles on it and weighs 60 plus pounds, I risked grabing it by the cover to lift it up and also to drag it across the crawl space. The cover is strong enough to do both.
There are several studies available on the Internet on vented and unvented crawl spaces, humidity effects etc. The reason is that it affects building codes. Building codes should be changed to drop vented crawl spaces (which buys nothing), based on the studies. One study showed that sealing the crawl space and controlling the humidity could average about a 20% yearly energy saving. Which is not surprising.
Go for Sylvane and the Santa Fe, you won't regret it.
Comments about Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier:
I did considerable research prior to purchasing the Santa Fe Advance. This machine performs great, is quiet, and runs very little to keep my 1,200 square ft crawlspace at a 45% humidity level. I expect to have many years of trouble free operation from this machine.
I was a little dissapointed when I received my "Free Digital Humidity Gauge with Purchase" of this $1,300 machine. It is probably worth about $6.
Comments about Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier:
bought this product amazingly quiet i thought the blower was going to be a lot louder i wonder if it is strong enough to be pulling humidity from back of crawls space still waiting for my humidity meter. over all not bad but not cheap
Comments about Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier:
I have a fairly good size crawlspace (approx. 1500 sq.ft. by 20 ft. in height). During service call, my HVAC contractor's maintenance man highly recommended that I install a whole house dehumidifier to keep down the mold and mildew. Needless to say, that going to be very expensive. I contacted my electric company's home efficiency expert (from the TVA here in Tennessee) and, based upon our home's environment and our comfort preferences, he recommended that all I need was a "good" stand alone dehumidifier (not the $200-$300 models available at Lowes or Home Depot).
I then contacted my HVAC company's sales manager, who recommended the Santa Fe Advance. He told me that since I didn't need any special installation requirements (I already had a drain and an electric outlet available), that they would set up a Santa Fe Advance for $2600. Not knowing if that was a good price or not, I went to the internet. After considerable research, I determined that the Santa Fe Advance was, in fact, the best product on the market for my needs. It was on the internet that I was able to find Sylvane, who sold the Santa Fe Advance at less than 1/2 the price of my contractor.
Not understanding how my HVAC contractor's price could be more than twice as much as Sylvane's price, I called Sylvane. A very nice and extremely knowledgeable service representative asked me several questions and concluded the Santa Fe Advance was perfect for my situation. I then questioned her as to why the price difference between Sylvane and my contractor. She commented that "many" consumers like me have told her the same thing about higher prices that some contractors quote to the same exact equipment that Sylvane sells. That was all I needed to hear to confirm my suspicions. I ordered the Santa Fe Advance right there and then over the phone. It was shipped and delivered within 5 days(total) and I was able to easily set it up myself. I couldn't be more pleased with its performance and quietness and the positive experience with Sylvane. I have also started doing business with another HVAC contractor.
Comments about Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier:
I am very impressed by how much water is coming out of the drain tube!
Comments about Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier:
We had a basement waterproofing company come give us an estimate for installing a sump pump system in our damp (occasionally wet) basement. As part of their walkthrough, they laughed at the small room dehumidifier we had down there that clearly was overmatched and no longer working. When they showed us the "heavy duty" dehumidifier they would install as part of the job, I like the idea but not the price (over $3K!).
When I did a little searching online after they left, I realized that they were just pitching a privately labeled version of the Santa Fe dehumidifier that Sylvane was offering for less than half the price. Bought one the next day and since installing it, our relative humidity level has plummeted in the basement. In the first 24 hours, the unit took us from 70 % down to 49% and has kept the level under 50%. The Santa Fe is also quieter than our previous sad unit. Took a bit of work to get it leveled properly initially but other than that, absolutely no complaints!
Comments about Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier:
I installed this dehumidifier in a "crawl space" of about 2400 sq ft. The space has 6 foot ceilings. I covered the ground with a vapor barrier and plugged all vents. This unit is easily keeping the humidity at 40% with a 80% and 90% humidity level outside. This is in the eastern North Carolina shore flood plain. I would guess the unit isn't running more than about 3 hours a day. I am extremely satisfied.
