We live in a 1500 sq. foot rancher with a large crawl space in Louisa Co. Va. Our crawl was moist to begin with when we moved in 2 yrs. ago and we had to have it treated for mold, as the house was vacant for quite a while.
The original vapor barrier did not cover the entire dirt floor AND our HVAC ductwork and handling unit is located in our crawl which was sweating constantly, causing not only moisture condensate but our insulation was falling as well. After trying to put down more 10mil vapor barrier, even taping it to the walls and sealing up the vents, we still had moisture issues.
We purchased a 70 pint Danby home dehumidifier as our neighbor told us they had the same problem and a little unit took care of their crawl just fine. However, not so for us. It worked well in the beginning, but ran constantly, had no humidistat, so we had to go under the house often to check on things and our electric bill went up $50-$75 a month!!!
We had gutters put on the house last year, thinking that would help and it didn't do as much as it needed to. There is no evidence of any standing water or leaks and our home sits on a slope-you would think a humid crawl wouldn't be such an issue. But, we have a very clay soil here in Louisa, and it does hold moisture well. So, this year we decided after much deliberation and comparing different dehumidifier brands to go ahead and spend the money on something that we could set and forget it, with an incredible reputation for longevity and reliablility.
We found that doing it ourselves was much more affordable then having a moisture company come in and provide us with crawlspace encapsulation and deumidifier- thousands less! Came UPS Freight-WONDERFUL COMPANY-prompt, professional delivery within the week of purchase-Shipping was FREE! Set up couldn't be easier. Here is how we did it- My wife and I placed the Santa Fe on concrete pavers we bought at Lowe's over our existing vapor barrier with 2ft clearance over top from the floor joists to the machine and leveled it with the bubble level provided on the machine.
Then, we slid the clear tubing provided, onto the barb nipple at the machine and secured it with an automotive hose clamp so it wouldn't leak. We bought a 2nd PVC barb nipple 5/8 inch to slide the clear tubing over at the end again securing it with a clamp and of course used PVC glue to attach that to 3/4" PVC pipe. We chiseled out a hole through the foundation block, which took some time, but well worth it, and ran the pvc thru that, down the slope of our natural yard grade to a small gravel pit to facillitate drainage.
We buried the pvc underground with the tip just out over the rock so we can see it draining. The machine was plugged into our 110 outlet and set it @ 45% for now to get the moisture under control. Took about 10 minutes before we started to see water come out through the tubing. It has ran all day and we anticipate it to keep going until it gets the humidity level under control(78% at start). Noise is not an issue-we cannot hear it in the house at all. The crawl is noticeably warmer and drier already!(My wife is thrilled!)
Wish the power cord was a little longer and the clear tubing as well, but that is all that we can say negative about this wonderful machine. Like I said, we have spent a good amount of time looking at all the brands on the market and this by far was the best bang for our hard earned dollars. Can't wait to see how the doors close up in the house and how the crawl feels and smells over the next week. Go ahead and spend the money now and save yourself the hassle of a smaller, less efficient unit. With what we have spent on electricity over the past year for the home unit in which the fan had run pretty much all the time, we could have had 50% of the cost saved up. Live and learn I guess.

I'm very satisfied with my purchase of the Santa Fe Dehumidifier!
Comments about Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier:
Outstanding product! Just what the doctor ordered. Completely changed the atmosphere in our basement and house altogether. Draws a tremendous amount of moisture out of the air.
Comments about Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier:
We purchased our house in October 2010 and during the home inspection we discovered that there was an excessive moisture problem in the crawlspace. The excessive moisture had caused the wood moisture content to become very high (19%) and surface mold had become a problem on the floor joists. The mold was close to the point of becoming active, so in order to close the sale on the house, we required the sellers to install a plastic vapor barrier and install a crawlspace dehumidifier. They did this and we closed the sale.
After months of monitoring the moisture levels in the crawlspace the moisture levels only increased and I noticed visible condensation on the cold water pipes. The dehumidifier that the sellers purchased ran all the time and simply was not solving the moisture problem. I did some research and discovered that the dehumidifier that we had was only rated for basements and crawlspaces up to 400 square feet. My crawlspace is approximately 2100 square feet. I shopped around and read countless reviews of numerous dehumidifiers and found that the Santa Fe Advance received the highest ratings time and time again, in fact I could not find a negative review for the Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier.
My termite company also recommended the Santa Fe Advance and assured me that it would solve my moisture problem. I decided to purchase the Santa Fe Advance on 08/31/2011 and it arrived about three days after I ordered it, WOW! The unit was packaged very well and was very easy to set up. Within minutes of turning it on for the first time, it began collecting water from the crawlspace and pumping it out of the crawlspace. Within a few days I noticed a distinct difference in the air quality in the crawlspace. It was noticeably drier and and smelled cleaner. The humidity level in my crawlspace was easily brought down to and stays at about 45% - 50% and the unit very seldom runs. The Santa Fe Advance solved my moisture problem and I know without a doubt that I made the right decision when I purchased it. You can't go wrong with this dehumidifier. It's awesome.
Comments about Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier:
We first placed this dehumidifier in the wet crawlspace on 08.15.2011. We also had a crew come in and completely seal the blocks, walls and ground with 6 mil plastic. They sealed the seams and at the top of the blocks.
We had mold and dampness and now it is BONE dry down there. We actually had to back it off a bit because it was making the air very dry in the home!
We are very, VERY pleased with our Santa Fe Advanced Dehumidifier and if you have 2500+ sq feet you need dehumidified then this is EXCELLENT for the job! We could not have made a better purchase for the price!
Thank you!
Jason

The unit worked as advertised, hooked up the pump ran the hose and plugged in the pump and dehumidifier. Took the humidity down to 50 percent in a few days. It now runs very little. The crawl space is now dry. I am very happy with the performance.

This is a well priced product worth every penny. Recommended!
Comments about Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier:
I have a 1500 sf dirt crawlspace in NC and was not eligible for termite coverage due to the moisture content in the wood from the high humidity. The AC duct work, despite being insulated, was sweating because of all the moisture. A vapor barrier did not cut it. I installed the Santa Fe advance myself with a small condensate pump and was able to drop the humidity from ~80% to ~35%. It has been running even through a hurricane where the peak humidity got up to 40%. So far it has been wonderful.
Comments about Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier:
About 3 1/2 years ago we built a new home on one level that is handicap accessible. This is our first experience owning a home with a crawl space. There are the required number and spacing of vents according to the codes department. the vents are all below ground level situated in "wells" (a half moon like device which fits below ground levels where each vent is located). We never gave any thought to ever having to inspect or go into that crawl space. (BOY, were we ever wrong). We had a bug treatment company hired to perform quarterly inspections and treatments. After being in the house about 1 1/2 years it was necessary to change treatment companies. The new company came out for the initial inspection of the property. There representative removed the crawl space cover and went under the house as part of the inspection. He came out and informed us the beginning of our problems. First, the builder had not provided a "vapor barrier." We then found out what a "vapor barrier" was and checked with our County Codes Department.
That is when we learned that our vents were OK being below ground level and surrounded by the wells. We further learned that in our County a vapor barrier is NOT required.
Our insulation and beams were covered with moisture, the insulation weeping and moisture was dripping over the gravel placed on the ground. We placed commercial fans in the space opening and elsware under the house to dry the area. After the area was dry, further inspection of the area disclosed mold had formed on the beams and insulation.
After investigation we learned of a product for mold remediation--MoldControl by concrobium. This product was dispensed by the use of a foger. After foging we put down a vapor barrier and placed vent fans in four of the vents, and closed the space. about 4 months ago we found the problem had returned. The representative of the treatment Co recommended we check with Sylvane. Based on there representative's recommendation we purchased the Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier. It has been in place almost 3 weeks and the area is DRY DRY DRY. The unit cycles on and off as necessary, and noise is NOT a problem. We are VERY satisfied.
Comments about Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier:
I have enjoyed everything about my purchase. I ordered on-line and my product was shipped as promised. UPS freight tracking worked well and my order was dropped off on time.
Since I had carefully measured my HVAC closet, the unit fit perfectly. The Advance accomplished in 24 hours what my little unit from xxx-Mart could not accomplish running continuously. Also, the Advance is about twice as energy efficient and seems to loaf along at about 25% duty cycle or less.
A few days after I installed the dehumidifier, my 20 year old water heater started to leak, soaking the carpet. At first I thought condensate from the Advance was somehow causing the water. A thorough investigation revealed it really was the water heater. I cut the supply and power to the water heater and with the help of a floor fan, the Advance had the space completely dry again within 24 hours, and the carpet dry in 48. I'm impressed!
If I had more space in my closet I might have bought the 130 pint unit, but I realize now that would have been overkill. The advance easily keeps my 1400 sq ft basement dry in the humid Tennessee summer. I turned up the AC thermostat since I don't mind a warmer but dry environment.
I haven't had it long enough to testify to reliability, but it seems well made and is running fine. Some reviewers point to the mechanical rather than electronic controls as a negative, but they work fine and I suspect may be more reliable.
Recommended.
Comments about Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier:
The humidity in my basement is finally under control thanks to the Santa Fe Advance Dehumidifier! This is an absolute must for anyone with a basement since all basements have moisture and controlling it is necessary to avoid mold, mildew, pests and general moisture problems to the structure of a home.
Within a few hours it brought the humidity in my 1,000+ sq ft basement below 50% and has maintained it well below there even as we've had the rainiest, most obnoxiously humid July on record for the Chicagoland area. It is running constantly to keep it approaching 35%, but as I said, our moisture issues have been record-breaking. It arrived on a pallet with my other ducting accessories so it was larger than I realized. My husband and I carried it downstairs with no issues, leveled the unit, let it set for a while then plugged it in and voila! Success! I highly recommend this to anyone with a hard to control humidity issue.
