When our 10 year old Whirlpool basement dehumidifier stopped working in April 2011 our 1,400 sq ft unfinished basement which we keep at near 60 degrees F was at 40% humidity. My husband spent about two hours per day for over a month looking for a replacement while the humidity moved up to about 65%. He first looked for another Whirlpool (no longer available). He looked at offerings of Lowes and Sears, both online and in the store. He read over 100 customer reviews at Lowes, Sears and Amazon. He concluded that finding another dehumidifier under $400 that would last ten years may be impossible.
A few customer reviews suggested that the same manufacturer may be making the critical parts for most $200 dehumidifiers. He compared about ten dehumidifiers in the $200 to $400 price range using primarily the information on the Sylvane website, but he included manufacturer's websites and other resellers. He searched for online manuals and read them. He selected Soleus primarily because it appeared to be one of the few or the only dehumidifier with a rotary compressor, but other features were also important to us (auto restart, energy star, 44 lbs).
He selected Sylvane because after several days of using their website and communicating with Sylvane support he had the most confidence that Sylvane would ship a brand new latest-model unit in an unopened package(not a return). We ordered the Soleus Air DP1-70-03 Dehumidifier on May 29, 2011. The dehumidifier arrived on time via Federal Express in an undamaged package. So far we have no problems with this Soleus Dehumidifier. It works exactly as specified and as we expect. Within two weeks, with humidity set to 45% and medium fan speed it brought our humidity to 45%. Our rating is four stars instead of five because we have only had the unit a short time.

I selected this dehumidifier after looking a lot of reviews and considering all of the problems I've had with my Whirlpool unit icing up. I am using a dehumidifier in the crawl space for moisture control. A vapor barrier is installed and I have had good results using a dehumidifier for moisture removal.

In SC with the high summer humidity, the A/C ducts sweat if the space is not dry. The new Soleus dehumidifier was shipped the day after the order was processed by Fed Ex and was due to be delivered within three days. Shipping was free.

The unit was packaged securely and well cushioned with foam for shipping safety. The unit was unboxed and test run in the shop for a day. Water removal at 70% RH was outstanding. The unit is quiet and controls are easy to understand without reading the operator's manual. The manual is short and to the point.

Instructions for hooking the unit to a garden hose were clear and the water container must be installed for the unit to work with a hose. I installed the unit under the floor, leveled and hooked up the hose. The unit has been running for several days and the water output is nearly continuous. You cannot hear the unit running in the crawl space.

The unit has rollers for moving and the manufacturing finish is professional and would look good inside any house. The controls are digital and are easy to understand, as I said without even reading the manual. I would recommend this unit to anybody looking for a lot of water removal and quiet operation. So far icing has not been a problem, but time with tell.

I am very pleased with this dehumidifier. It does everything that it says it will. It has taken the humidity out of the basement quite well. The external drain hose is a plus. No more checking the bucket. The actual humidity display is great, I can see the humidity level going down. The greatest plus is the auto restart if the power goes out. No more going away for a few days and coming home to a musty basement because the power went out for a short time while I was away. I set the dehumidifier on constant, let it run for 2 hours, then purposely pulled the plug out (simulating a power failure) then plugged it back in and it started up and kept all the settings. Great dehumidifier. Highly recommended.

I replaced (2) older noisy units with one Soleus DP1-70-30. It is very quiet and does a great job of keeping my basement dry in the summer.

Excellent product, easy setup and to run. I have one here at home in Illinois
and one in summer house in Kentucky that we leave on 24-7 and use the
hose connect to the drain, so we don't have to empty it.

I love this dehumidifier! It is the best one I've owned. It is quiet and has helped lower the humidity in my house considerably. The fan shuts off when the correct humidity level is reached and only cycles on occasionally to test the air. The timer feature is an added bonus. I can set it to shut the unit off 2 or 4 hours after I go to bed so that the unit is not running all night unnecessarily. Great product. I would recommend this unit to anyone who is looking for a inexpensive but effective unit.

An extra well built machine. A few improvements would be to quiet it down some and make an air funnel that could direct air around a corner so that the noise of the machine could be aimed elsewhere. It does the job day and night, keeping up with high humidity on hot summer days. A very good machine that works like they say.

The product works very well. But the display that shows the humidity level is very confusing. When you change the humidity level, the display shows the newly selected humidity level for only a very short period of time and then quickly changes to display the actual (current) humidity reading of the room. My previous Sears dehumidifier never showed you the actual (current) humidity level of the room, so I thought there was something wrong because no matter what level I selected, the display would quickly change.

I emailed Soleus and they explained what I just said above. The Soleus manual does not say anything about this and should be changed to explain this. Also, changing the humidity level is a bit confusing. When you first press the button to change the humidity level, it should first show you the current setting and then you should have to press the up or down button again to change the humidity level. Other than these points, I like it. With the heavy rains and high humidity we had in March, the dehumidifier was running most of the time and was very effective.
