I recently purchased a home that had developed mold in its basement because the house had been closed up while it sat on the market for nearly a year. After remediation of the mold problem, I was eager to prevent any future mold issues due to a damp basement.
Research led me to the Winix 50 pint dehumidifier (WDH851). I chose this model because it was a cost effective solution "robust enough at 50 pints to meet my needs yet within my budget. I appreciate having three options for disposing of the waste water (bucket, garden hose, or pump) because I was able to immediately set up the unit using the low-maintenance option of a garden hose and will be able to use the pump option when I transition to a more permanent solution.
The unit also has many options for selecting virtually any desired humidity control (particular % humidity, continuous run, etc.). I was a bit apprehensive about setting up the unit, but with easy-to-follow instructions, this proved to be relatively straight forward. I did have to jiggle and re-seat the bucket a few times before the unit would start, but the indicator light clearly specified that this was the issue -- a little persistence and the unit was quietly humming along.
What really tipped the balance for purchasing this unit was the automatic restart. Although power outages are infrequent, from past experience I know how easy it is to forget to re-start appliances. The automatic restart on this unit gives me peace of mind that my basement will continue to stay dry.
I chose to purchase this dehumidifier through Sylvane because they offered the best price that I could find, and I was also able to find a promotional discount on top of their already competitive price. I was most pleasantly surprised with Sylvane's courteous, professional customer service and the extraordinarily speedy delivery.

When it arrived, the Winix had a strange buzz as well as a sheet-metal-rattle when the compressor kicked in. I phoned Winix. They said its defect: send it back. Sylvane's wonderful customer service replaced it right away!
We are very used to the DeLonghi, which has a relatively loud even whoosh to its sound. But we needed a dehumidifier that will shut off when the correct humidity is reached and that will restart when there is a power failure - very important for our cottage! When the set humidity is reached, the Winix will shut off completely (including the fan). Also after a power-failure, the Winix will start up again.
The replacement Winix however does buzz! And it buzzes loud! It does not have the tinny sheet-metal rattle that the 1st Winix had, but it does have a buzz so penetrating, that we cannot occupy the same room that it is working in. We have to move it from room to room. In the same room, you cannot watch TV, and you cannot understand anyone talking - even at the low setting.
Does it remove humidity? Yes it does. But the buzz is rather unbearable. Both Winix's (the defect one and the replacement Winix) had this buzz, so it seems to be designed that way rather than a defect. That penetrating buzz digs into your skull and is much louder and harder to endure than the loud whoosh of the DeLonghi.
It would be nice to have an affordable machine that is a combo of both: the features of the Winix with the quality technology of the DeLonghi.
If you have the cash, I would recommend getting a different machine, but the professional ones cost one grand.

This product may no longer be available, which is regrettable. It is working well and I believe the things stored in the basement are being protected to the extent possible.

Comments about Winix 50 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH851):
I'm a Home Inspector who deals with reporting moisture problems in homes over & over again. Meager attempts by homeowners using cheap big box store bought dehumidifiers most often fails to control moisture affected homes having foundation drainage or poor roof water run-off control issues, resulting in high relative humidity and fungus development. In the Spring of 2012, my neighbor decided to purchase a distressed home across the street from us. The home was built in 1972 but was not occupied for the last 5 years and not maintained by the Property Owner (Church Rectory). The house is a tri-level, having a finished partial basement area and adjoining crawlspace with rough concrete floor (rat slab). Both areas had high relative humidity with a obnoxious musty odor and visible fungus on finished surfaces & wood floor framing throughout. The fiberglass insulation in the crawlspace was dripping wet. I had suggested a plan for rectifying these adverse conditions to my neighbor, one of which was to get a professional commercial grade dehumidifier. One Manufacturers dehumidifier that I found online was no longer available in a smaller model and the larger units were over $1,000.00 which would have been overkill for the square footage. I found the WINIX 50 pint on the Sylvane website but was reluctant to buy it since I had never heard of the brand before. What sold me was that it had its own internal pump which was needed to drain the collected water outdoors to a higher elevation, the automatic re-start after power outage feature, automatic defrost cycling and the ability to function in lower crawlspace temps. My neighbor agreed to try it, so I ordered it for him in hope that it would do a good job at a substantial cost savings over the more expensive commercial grade units. I pulled all of the damp fiberglass insulation out from floor framing in the crawlspace and started the dehumidifier around June 2012. This WINIX unit relentlessly removed water on a constant basis - I know because I wanted to track its performance so I pumped the water into 5 gallon buckets and emptied them by hand. I emptied 30 gallons of water in the 1st week and 20 in the 2nd week. The dryness of the air in the both crawlspace & finished basement was astounding. After seeing that this unit was a workhorse, I just routed the small 1/4" drain tubing outdoors to a subsurface drain pipe for the gutter downspout. The amazing part was in the 3rd and 4th weeks it became noticeable that there was no longer a musty stench, meaning the active fungus was now in a dormant state. Later in the summer, the house had new gutters installed and negative grading was corrected around the foundation. The affected basement finished flooring & walls were cleaned or removed where damaged by fungus along with application of a professional grade Biocide purchased online. The crawlspace floor framing will be the next project to cleanse of the dormant surface fungus. It is winter now so the dehumidifier barely needs to fight the ugly battle of high relative humidity. Personally, I find the controls to be useful by offering numerous settings, depending on desired level of performance. I also found this 50 pint unit to be fairly quiet considering it was on the 'HIGH' setting most of the time. Once the air is conditioned, it only runs when relative humidity increases again. My neighbor was so elated this unit converted a bad situation to a normal condition that he had me order another one for his home since he has moisture problems in his basement as well. Within weeks the WINIX 50 pint took control there too. I must mention, ordering both times from Sylvane was effortless and shipment was FAST - free shipping at that! I can now proudly recommend this dehumidifier in all of my inspection reports which are uploaded for viewing online with the means to include a live link directly to the Sylvane website having the two WINIX dehumidifier models. If you want a solid performer for a problem you may be having yourself - get this brand - it has sold me with its 'hands on' performance before my own eyes.

Comments about Winix 50 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH851):
Dehumidifier set on specific level, like 60,would continuously cycle on and off. Other dehumidifiers I've owned, would reach the specified level, turn off for an hour or more and then restart. On/off cycles for this unit varied between 1 and 2 minutes and would cycle like described for hours. Sent the unit back to Winix in Illinois, they wouldn't let me drop it off, and would not send a box. Received the same unit back within several weeks, no explanation, same problem. E-mail went unanswered.
The dehumidifier does remove the humidity, but in my opinion, there is something wrong with the delay in the sensor unit.
Should have sent it back to Sylvane within the 30 days, but am paying the price for my laziness.

This thing makes itself work! It drains itself out a window up about 5 feet and comes all set to what I needed. It is one of the best purchases I have ever made. I even bought one for my stepson who is a total perfectionist.

Comments about Winix 50 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH851):
The system is a little noisy for a general living space, just because of the amount of air it pushes out on high. It is being used in an unfinished basement to help keep the air dry so tools/pipes/etc. don't have rust issues. It has been set on 40% and has been working great for the last few weeks. The air is noticeably dryer and the smell of the basement is non-existent now. We have minor flooding during heavy prolonged rains, and the floor was dry again within hours, something that would take a week or more if it was not cleaned up by hand.

this is a real dandy product,it works really well and the pump works great to get rid of the water since the water pan would be difficult to use.The machine does over heat the room but thanks to the adjustments available to program the running time you can cut down on this problem considerably. Most other machines have the problem of an awkward pan and over heating but I gave winix 5 stars because they solved these problems and if you buy this machine you'll be perfectly satisfied.

Comments about Winix 50 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH851):
The WINIX dehumidifier is effective for removing humidity, the cabinet itself is attractive but the single reason I originally purchased this unit is because it has an automatic pump to empty the bucket. Having the pump allows me the ability to keep the unit centrally located within our finished basement, it additionally allows the unit to keep running when needing to remove moisture, I no longer need to be emptying the bucket (up to two times daily), it is all automatically done now! I have used many other brands in my home and in my rental properties and have not found one that seems to remove the humidity like the WINIX and be able to actually shut down for hours at a time like the WINIX does. I enjoy that it has a digital humidistat and controls that keep their settings in case of a power failure. This was not my first purchase of the WINIX and I have come back to purchase more of the same unit because of value I believe I have received with my other WINIX dehumidifiers (that are still in operation without any issues). My purchase from Sylvane has been excellent and my WINIX Dehumidifiers ordered were shipped the same day as I ordered, can't ask for more Sylvane! I am using a WINIX to assist in my rental properties when I have carpets cleaned, I use the WINIX to speed the drying of all of the carpet after steam cleaning is completed, it assures that mildew doesn't occur and the pump allows me to be able to pump it up the steps if necessary, no longer limited to keeping the dehumidifier in the kitchen or bathroom with the gravity drain hose going into the sink.

Comments about Winix 50 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH851):
We never had a dehumidifier before, even though we were homeowners for over 30 years. However. this summer we learned that a pipe leading to our garden hose had froze and we had water in a closet in the finished part of the basement. We borrowed a dehumidifier and saw how much water was extracted and decided to purchase one. The reviews on the Winix were excellent, and we went ahead with the purchase. We are very pleased. The finished part of the basement is 800 sq.ft., so we purchased the 50 pint model. The design is aesthetically appealing, and the fact it is on casters is very convenient. We roll it to different parts of the basement easily. The controls are very easy to understand and use. We have used it on the "auto" setting, as well as manual settings. Only advice we would offer is that if you are dumping the bucket yourself, get down on the floor when putting it back. Being on the same level makes it very easy. We have also used the tubing to have it drain out of a hole through a window, that we fashioned for that purpose. The video of this procedure on the website was a bonus and very helpful. It still amazes us how much humidity and water is extracted from a basement. The only con is the noise, but if we are down there to watch a movie, we just turn it off, open the windows, and enjoy the room. Afterwards, we turn it back on, and let it do its thing! The entire transaction was very satisfactory and we recommend this product to others.

Comments about Winix 50 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH851):
I have a basement with a damp crawlspace, two sump pump systems and a humidex. The humidex is good for odors, but really does not get rid of the humidity. The crawl space is below a room which in the summer has a mildew odor so i decided to get the extra dehumidfier. I have it set up at the small entrance door, on a shelf, as I cannot place it directly in the crawl space. It was heavy to lift, but the automatic pump is working very well and comes with a long thin hose I can run to a sink. I research dehumidifiers and the pump is great as opposed to using passive drainage which has not worked well in the past.
