I recently purchased a home that had developed mold in its basement because the house had been closed up while it sat on the market for nearly a year. After remediation of the mold problem, I was eager to prevent any future mold issues due to a damp basement.
Research led me to the Winix 50 pint dehumidifier (WDH851). I chose this model because it was a cost effective solution "robust enough at 50 pints to meet my needs yet within my budget. I appreciate having three options for disposing of the waste water (bucket, garden hose, or pump) because I was able to immediately set up the unit using the low-maintenance option of a garden hose and will be able to use the pump option when I transition to a more permanent solution.
The unit also has many options for selecting virtually any desired humidity control (particular % humidity, continuous run, etc.). I was a bit apprehensive about setting up the unit, but with easy-to-follow instructions, this proved to be relatively straight forward. I did have to jiggle and re-seat the bucket a few times before the unit would start, but the indicator light clearly specified that this was the issue -- a little persistence and the unit was quietly humming along.
What really tipped the balance for purchasing this unit was the automatic restart. Although power outages are infrequent, from past experience I know how easy it is to forget to re-start appliances. The automatic restart on this unit gives me peace of mind that my basement will continue to stay dry.
I chose to purchase this dehumidifier through Sylvane because they offered the best price that I could find, and I was also able to find a promotional discount on top of their already competitive price. I was most pleasantly surprised with Sylvane's courteous, professional customer service and the extraordinarily speedy delivery.

When it arrived, the Winix had a strange buzz as well as a sheet-metal-rattle when the compressor kicked in. I phoned Winix. They said its defect: send it back. Sylvane's wonderful customer service replaced it right away!
We are very used to the DeLonghi, which has a relatively loud even whoosh to its sound. But we needed a dehumidifier that will shut off when the correct humidity is reached and that will restart when there is a power failure - very important for our cottage! When the set humidity is reached, the Winix will shut off completely (including the fan). Also after a power-failure, the Winix will start up again.
The replacement Winix however does buzz! And it buzzes loud! It does not have the tinny sheet-metal rattle that the 1st Winix had, but it does have a buzz so penetrating, that we cannot occupy the same room that it is working in. We have to move it from room to room. In the same room, you cannot watch TV, and you cannot understand anyone talking - even at the low setting.
Does it remove humidity? Yes it does. But the buzz is rather unbearable. Both Winix's (the defect one and the replacement Winix) had this buzz, so it seems to be designed that way rather than a defect. That penetrating buzz digs into your skull and is much louder and harder to endure than the loud whoosh of the DeLonghi.
It would be nice to have an affordable machine that is a combo of both: the features of the Winix with the quality technology of the DeLonghi.
If you have the cash, I would recommend getting a different machine, but the professional ones cost one grand.

I found the water bucket a bit hard to remove, but I actually use the gravity feed drain, so it's not an issue. Otherwise, after owning it for 30 days, I'm very happy w/ the unit. I use it in my finished basement. It does a nice job down there; keeps the room comfortable.

Comments about Winix 50 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH851):
The unit is the proper size for the job. It is louder than I thought but once the humidity has reached the set level, the unit cycles to maintain which is just several times per hour. Energy efficient. We have no leaks or issues with the unit. Far lighter than our old unit.

Once I got the water tank properly placed, the pump worked as it was designed. It took a call to the tech department at Winnex to find out how to get the pump to work. After the pump started to work it has not failed me. The controls are well designed and work as they are supposed to. The controls are sensitive to humidity changes and maintain the desired humidity levels. Time will tell, but over the past month, the dehumidifier has worked like I want it to.

I like the variety of operations, i.e. % of humidity, cycle of hours, drain and pump options to empty, etc. Easy to move around. Nice long cord. I use this in my finished basement during the humid months.
I have not been able to use the pump yet. I read the directions but nothing happened. I will call for help next time I try this.

Setup is simply 'plug and play'. I'd prefer the drain pan to be in front, nevertheless it is easy to remove and there is no slopping, dripping or mess when removing. Easy to clean. Has a faint rattle...sounds like something loose or vibrating. Overall I'm very satisfied.

Comments about Winix 50 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH851):
Since we moved into our house 3 years ago, every summer, our basement would become very humid and sticky. Last summer was particularly bad, as there was a noticible smell of a musty odor, probably mold of some kind. My parents visited our house last summer, and they had to sleep in the basement. It was not a positive experience for them, to put it simply. I decided this summer that I would purchase a dehumidifier to stop the damp basement problem. Did I make a good decision!
I installed the unit in the basement the day it arrived, and after about a half hour of it being on, I decided to empty the water collection tray, and I was amazed at how much water it had already sucked out of the air. After a day of running the dehumidifier, I could feel a huge difference in the basement air. The carpet was no longer damp, and the air was nice and dry.
I was skeptical about the auto-pump feature at first, but it turned out to be quite handy. No need to empty the tank, it all gets pumped out automatically! I highly recommend this to anyone that has damp basement issues. The fact that it is energy star qualified is only a plus.
The only negative (and it is a very minor issue) is the fact that if the machine runs for a long period of time, it will heat up the room it is in a few degrees. But other than that, I have no issues with the product.

Previous dehumidifier died recently so I researched various options. Based on reviews for the MANY different brands/models I selected the Winix dehumidifier. I've been pleasantly surprised with the quality (built very solidly) along with its effectiveness of taking the humidity out of our finished basement. Some people mentioned them being noisy but we haven't had that issue. It sits about 20 ft away from our sofa and we can comfortably listen to the TV while it's running.

The unit removes the moisture in the basement. I set it in automatic and the machine does the rest. Its built-in pump empties the water automatically, just turn it on and let it run. The unit is a bit on the noisy side but it is not too bad.
Comments about Winix 50 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH851):
This is fairly nosy but it is for my finished basement so it is tolerable.
It does an excellent job keeping it very comfortable. My electricity is lower as compared to my old dehumidifier which was too small for this area and ran all the time.
