I recently purchased a home that had developed mold in its basement because the house had been closed up while it sat on the market for nearly a year. After remediation of the mold problem, I was eager to prevent any future mold issues due to a damp basement.

Research led me to the Winix 50 pint dehumidifier (WDH851). I chose this model because it was a cost effective solution "robust enough at 50 pints to meet my needs yet within my budget. I appreciate having three options for disposing of the waste water (bucket, garden hose, or pump) because I was able to immediately set up the unit using the low-maintenance option of a garden hose and will be able to use the pump option when I transition to a more permanent solution.

The unit also has many options for selecting virtually any desired humidity control (particular % humidity, continuous run, etc.). I was a bit apprehensive about setting up the unit, but with easy-to-follow instructions, this proved to be relatively straight forward. I did have to jiggle and re-seat the bucket a few times before the unit would start, but the indicator light clearly specified that this was the issue -- a little persistence and the unit was quietly humming along.

What really tipped the balance for purchasing this unit was the automatic restart. Although power outages are infrequent, from past experience I know how easy it is to forget to re-start appliances. The automatic restart on this unit gives me peace of mind that my basement will continue to stay dry.

I chose to purchase this dehumidifier through Sylvane because they offered the best price that I could find, and I was also able to find a promotional discount on top of their already competitive price. I was most pleasantly surprised with Sylvane's courteous, professional customer service and the extraordinarily speedy delivery.

When it arrived, the Winix had a strange buzz as well as a sheet-metal-rattle when the compressor kicked in. I phoned Winix. They said its defect: send it back. Sylvane's wonderful customer service replaced it right away!

We are very used to the DeLonghi, which has a relatively loud even whoosh to its sound. But we needed a dehumidifier that will shut off when the correct humidity is reached and that will restart when there is a power failure - very important for our cottage! When the set humidity is reached, the Winix will shut off completely (including the fan). Also after a power-failure, the Winix will start up again.

The replacement Winix however does buzz! And it buzzes loud! It does not have the tinny sheet-metal rattle that the 1st Winix had, but it does have a buzz so penetrating, that we cannot occupy the same room that it is working in. We have to move it from room to room. In the same room, you cannot watch TV, and you cannot understand anyone talking - even at the low setting.

Does it remove humidity? Yes it does. But the buzz is rather unbearable. Both Winix's (the defect one and the replacement Winix) had this buzz, so it seems to be designed that way rather than a defect. That penetrating buzz digs into your skull and is much louder and harder to endure than the loud whoosh of the DeLonghi.

It would be nice to have an affordable machine that is a combo of both: the features of the Winix with the quality technology of the DeLonghi.

If you have the cash, I would recommend getting a different machine, but the professional ones cost one grand.

Comments about Winix 50 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH851):

This is fairly nosy but it is for my finished basement so it is tolerable.
It does an excellent job keeping it very comfortable. My electricity is lower as compared to my old dehumidifier which was too small for this area and ran all the time.

Too Early to Tell

Comments about Winix 50 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH851):

This is my 4th dehumidifier and 4th brand in 8 years. They have lasted from one year to three, so it is far too early to tell if this is a long-lasting unit. So far I am very pleased with it as it appears to be a quality model. I like the pump that eliminates having to empty the bucket. This model has a very small bucket, so manual emptying could be a chore. I also wish the panel would show the actual room humidity, not just what it is set at. Come back to me in three years and I can give you a good review.

Low Maintenance

Comments about Winix 50 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH851):

I have had my dehumidifier for two weeks now with no need to empty buckets. It does export a lot of heat, but that is not a problem for the basement. All in all, so far, a great purchase for the home. I have the automatic pump setting with the auto option to keep at the right humidity percent. With a lot of humidity in the air in the beginning, I manually turned it off for a little while with the heat.

Winix WDH851 dries out my new (old) house

By Matthew Schofield

from USA

Comments about Winix 50 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH851):

I moved into an 880 square foot house in October 2011. The water table in the area is high and the house has a dirt crawlspace so the humidity inside the house was quite high. I didn't get around to buying a dehumidifier that fall because the humidity dropped when the weather cooled off. I knew I would have to get one in the spring, though.

I looked at a big box store and read reviews about the line of dehumidifiers they carried. The reviews were not good. I went to a different big box store and they carried the same line of dehumidifiers as the first store. I then looked for a quality dehumidifier on the internet until I finally found the Winix WDH 851 on Sylvane's website. Most of the reviews I read on their site and other sites were positive and the Winix had features that I hadn't realized were available but which I knew I would use. I ordered the Winix from Sylvane and it arrived in just a few days.

The Winix has several modes but I use the humidity mode with the fan set on low. With the unit in the back of the kitchen the noise level is reasonably low and I can still watch TV in the living room. I usually let the dehumidifier run in the morning until the humidity reaches forty-five percent and the unit shuts off then I turn off the power for the day. When the weather warms up more I may have to leave the power on and run either the auto or humidity settings because the humidity will be higher in the summer.

The Winix has a pump to drain the bucket when it is full so I don't have to worry about emptying the reservoir. I also don't need to set the dehumidifier on a stand so it can drain into the tub or the kitchen sink. The pump works well and is inaudible. The included 18 foot long pump drain hose was also a nice touch.

There are only two things I don't like about this dehumidifier and they are minor. On the humidity setting the fan occasionally kicks onto the high setting. The unit may be defrosting the coils, I'm not sure. The other thing is that the dehumidifier also turns on and off more frequently than I would like when it is on the humidity or auto settings. Neither one of these issues is more than a minor annoyance, though.

I have been very happy with this purchase and don't expect to have problems with the unit. It feels like it is solidly built and it has a great warranty. When I first started looking at dehumidifiers most of the reviews I read were about dehumidifiers that only lasted one or two years. I expect the Winix to last a lot longer than that.

It's wonderful to have this dehumidifier with a pump and not have to run down to the basement twice a day to empty a bucket. Working like a charm after 3 weeks...

Haven't had this product for long but so far so good.Got to tell you that the entire shopping process from start to finish has been great. I love the built in pump (no brainer), it's not as loud as some would have you believe, and my newly finished basement is staying nice and dry.The machine is good looking and blends perfectly. Got to put in a good word for Sylvane as well. Can't beat there price, free shipping, and delivery time!
Totally satisfied.

I was looking for a dehumidifier that would last more than 2 years. I hope this is the one. It arrived on time and in good condition. So far it is working as advertised. I would buy again from Sylvane.

It's good

By James

Comments about Winix 50 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH851):

Usage period: 1 week.

The dehumidifier is of moderate noise level. It is similar to a louder computer fan, but is quieter than my last DeLonghi dehumidifier.
I like that it shuts off unlike other units, and uses less power than my 45 pint Delonghi with fan on and compressor on. Strangely it uses more power on standby mode.

Cons:
The build quality and quality check leaves a bit to be desired.
The radiator fins on the bottom left were crumpled into the plastic housing. Looks like it was improperly seated. I did my best to adjust the fins and hopefully it is okay.

Possible con:
The filter is a bit flimsy, but should be okay.

Pros:
I really like the timer, other units have useless timers that must be constantly set and reset.

Currently just using the bucket, but have not tried the pump or gravity drain yet.

A neat looking dehumidifier-works great!

By Eric Schemanske

from USA

Comments about Winix 50 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH851):

I recently purchased this dehumidifier to replace a Whirlpool (now obsolete). I now have owned this new product approximately two months and I'm absolutely thrilled with its operation up to this point!

The noise level is somewhat on the higher level but not bad. Upon arrival, I first checked out all the drainage features and found to my delight that their operation was excellent.

My dehumidifier is located in the basement so I finally decided the gravity feature was best suited for my needs. I also opted to go with the transparent hose which I bought at the local hardware store for five dollars. This way I can watch the water leave the dehumidifier and go to the drain where I decided to locate the exit point. Well, so far, I'm satisfied but, I'll know better once I see how the durability factor checks out. See ya then!
