My house is 100+ years old with a stone foundation and sits on a hill. In short - the basement is always damp, and sometimes even has water flowing across from the up-hill side to the dry-well on the downhill side.

I've had this house for 28 years. After the first few years, I realized I needed a dehumidifier down there. I got one (major brand name omitted per review requirement), and it worked "okay", but it didn't do all that good a job, and it cost a lot in terms of electricity.

Years later, I subsequently bought TWO of another major brand (name omitted per review requirement) because they were on sale. Same basic story; they worked okay, but didn't seem to be very effective.

In 2012, all three of those died. So did my box fans. Not a good year for me in terms of electrical appliances. So I looked in a popular magazine that rates items, and it led me to the Soleus Air SG-DEH-70-2 Dehumidifier. I tried finding it through many local stores, but no one carried it. So I searched for on-line options, and found it offered by Sylvane. While leary about ordering a heavy electrical appliance on-line, I bit the bullet and ordered it.

I've been nothing but happy. The ordering process was excellent, the delivery was prompt. The dehumidifier arrived well-packaged and free from damage. And it has worked beautifully. I was nothing less than *amazed* at how quickly and efficiently it worked. I could feel the difference later that first day... which coincided with the percentage-humidity reading it displayed. After two or three days, the basement felt what I would call properly dry.

The dehumidifier has performed excellently all summer and fall, keeping the humidity low, and without as big a rise in the electric costs.

The only negatives, which are minor by comparison are:

1) It was difficult to figure out how to attach a hose for external draining... though once I figured it out, it was easy enough.

2) With the external hose attached, it's apparently very touchy in terms of being on a level floor. It doesn't seem like it would've taken a lot of engineering to improve how forgiving it is. When at an improper angle, the water flows into the bucket rather than the hose, which means it fills up and shuts off.

3) The collection bucket doesn't have any "pouring spout". You have to pour it out of a corner, which has plastic molding patterns in it, so it has a tendency to pour other than where you're trying to pour it.

4) The light that says I need to change the filter comes on frequently, even though the filter looks fine, and doesn't seem any cleaner after cleaning. This doesn't seem to have negatively impacted it's performance in any way though, so it's not a big deal.

Aside from those three things, I'm very happy with this dehumidifier, and would buy another one if the need arises.

I have a very large and finished basement area that gets very humid and musky in the summer. Have a 45 pint unit that had not been cutting it. Purchased this bigger unit and right out if the box it read the Humity level at 15% higher than the other unit and a seperte gage that I have. I was told buy the company to run at continuous level for 24 hours and it would correct itself. It did not. I like the look, quiet run and effectiveness of the product, so I returned it for a new one. Same issue. I am done and very Dissapointed with the unit.

Comments about Soleus Air SG-DEH-70E-2 Dehumidifier:

This is my second review as my first unit was recalled, price refunded. Normally I wouldn't
buy another after recall but this is clearly the best working unit I've owned of five brands. The Soleus doesn't quit working, make strange noises, or leak like all the others. It just fills the bucket twice a day, drying up a wet basement floor consistently. Even the bucket has
been improved, sliding in and out easily. Any complaints of excessive noise are frivolous... dehumidifiers are not silent and reducing fan speed helps. This one does the job.

Comments about Soleus Air SG-DEH-70E-2 Dehumidifier:

This is our second Soleus SG-DEH-70E-2, the first one having been recalled by the manufacturer for a defect (which we never experienced). We were pleased with the old one, and continue to be pleased with this one. We use it to keep our semi-finished basement dry. Water pan is heavy and awkward to empty. Other than that, no problems.

2 and 4 hour delays are confusing - with one of our previous whirlpool this meant the unit cycled on and off every 2 or 4 hours but this one it simply completely turns off then

This is the same model - but a newer version that was NOT recalled for fire threat - only determined this after calling the company recall line

Comments about Soleus Air SG-DEH-70E-2 Dehumidifier:

I live in Florida and humidity and mold are a serious issue here. This unit is outstanding at removing moisture from my primary living area. The room is 27 x 12 and it does an outstanding job; not only in this room but the entire apartment. It's quiet and I really don't pay any attention to the noise level on low and mid settings. It works great. My condo is so much more comfortable now.

I want a second unit as a backup. I would strongly recommend purchasing from Sylvane as they have been a great and reputable company. I would not bother buying from anyone else since their service has been excellent .

Comments about Soleus Air SG-DEH-70E-2 Dehumidifier:

Application: The dehumidifier says it's not for outdoor use. And, of course: you can't have it in the rain or dehumidify the atmosphere of the world. I have mine "semi-outdoors." That is, it's in my crawlspace, which I've encapsulated (sealed off all vents and covered the ground below with plastic sheeting) to eliminate moisture/mildew down there. This unit connects up with a hose (or pvc pipe, which I used) to drain the unit down the piping, which goes through the foundation wall (drilled a hole through the brick, but you could also drill a hole through one of the plastic-and-screen foundation vents) and drips out outside the foundation and away from the house (put a plastic, gutter-drainpipe deflector under the drip). The unit is light, so it was easy to move through the crawlspace (kneeling height at most) to get it in the right spot.

Controls: I also like its controls. Good options. I set it on 50% humidity (they say 55% is what you need to keep mildew away) and leave it. Drip, drip, drip out the drainpipe outside the foundation. When it gets to the desired (lack of) humidity (50%), it shuts off its dehumidification to save energy costs. Glad for that.

Noise level: When everything is completely silent and I put my ear to the floor directly above the humidifier's position in the crawlspace, I can hear it; otherwise, I don't. No one in my family has ever noticed it; and it's set on the highest fan setting.
