Comments about Sunpentown SPT 70-Pint Dehumidifier - SD-71E:
We were told that the HVAC system in our house was installed without a plenum from which ducts run to all vents as is industry norms, but instead a larger duct running to the farthest vent, with shortest possible duct run from that larger duct's nearest point to each other vent (Thank you DR Horton!).
The HVAC tech told us that this causes the unit to run more than necessary because there is not enough resistance to air flow, which the plenum would normally provide, to make the air move slow enough over the exchanger to take the humidity out of the air. He estimated this 6 year old system, in our Texas heat, would be lucky to get 4 more years due to this.
We asked if taking more humidity out of the air via a dehumidifier would help, and were told it would help the unit not have to work as hard, so could extend its life, but no guarantees.
We ordered on a Wed, were told it would be here the following Tue, and it was. Bought a 1400 SF rated unit for a very open 1800 SF house. Humidity has been brought down from 65 - 70% at initial installation and kept at 35%, going to 40% after going in and out a lot.
Before, we ran the AC with temp set at 78. We now run it at 82 and it feels more comfortable (and cool) than 78 did without the dehumidification.
