I have two connected large rooms without windows that would hold a typical window AC. The Toyotomi was the answer. The exhaust hose fit easily into the dining room sliding window. I use a fan to move the cold air from the dining room into the living room. The rooms are 480 sq. feet, with 8 foot ceilings, below a ridge vented attic that gets quite hot.

One of the MOST IMPORTANT things to do when assembling the unit, is to pay attention to the large warning on the top of the container! That is, leave the unit upright after you remove it from the boxes for at least 24 hours before turning it on for the first time! Until the unit is delivered to the customer, we have no idea of its position/orientation during shipping. This step is Extremely Important, because any time spent turned on its side allows oil in the compressor to leak past the seals. Since liquids don't compress, this oil on the wrong side of the compressor seals, will blow out the seals and ruin the unit when you turn it on. Sitting upright for 24 hours before turning it on allows the oil time to seep back past the seals. This is also true for refridgerators (I found this out the hard way, sigh!).

The adjustable window kit was easy to assemble, though the hoses were a little short to allow both of them to connect (my sliding window is several feet off the floor). So I left the intake hose unattached to the window for now. There are longer parts and longer hoses to fit odd sizes and shapes available as separate kits, but I was too hot to wait for them to arrive.

It has been a horrendously hot summer here, and I have run the Toyotomi 24 / 7 since I first turned it on three weeks ago. It hasn't missed a beat, and continues to pump out cold air like a champ.

So far I haven't had to empty condensate reservoir as the condensate is dripped over the hot coils and the moist air is then vented out the exhaust hose. However, I don't look forward to emptying it as the drain is only an inchand a half or so from the floor. Less actually because it is on carpet.

Since the entire unit is inside, unlike a window AC unit, it is noisier, but not that much noisier (you ears may be more sensitive than ours of course). And it is a type of white noise (constant) so after a while I have been able to ignore it. Heat, on the other hand, is something I can't ignore while dripping sweat in a hot house. ALL HVAC systems make noise, so it's just a matter of degree.

We are quite happy we purchased this unit, and I have already recommended it to two collegues at work, who have similar non-traditional windows. The shipping was very fast, and the unit was double boxed.

I thought about buying a portable AC unit from one of the "Big Box" home stores, but they wouldn't fit into my car (a mid-size sedan). Also, the big box home stores only sell the less reliable, cheaper brands because they need to keep their profit levels high. Finally, Sylvane delivered to my front porch for free!

Note: this is the size of a small European refridgerator and weighes 88 pounds, so I had to cut the boxes down from around the unit as it was too tall and heavy to lift out. Also, after reading the warning on the top of the box I didn't want to tip the unit over to pull it out.

If you need a portable air conditioner this is a good unit to consider.

I had a Toyitomi 8000 BTU before, the new one rocks, the only issue and the worst, you can't find extention for horizontal slider Windows which are longer opening in compare with the shorter include window panel. No one carry those and who carry them are sold out. So if you got those horizontal slider Windows, check the size before you buy this air conditioner.

Comments about Toyotomi TAD-T40LW 14000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Heat Pump:

Writer's impressions and opinions follow (some in response to his own or other's concerns):

    1. Unit appears very well made indeed right down to the hoses and window panel kit- which is in fact supplied with the unit.
    2. The unit draws 10.8A in both heating and cooling mode. This is near the limit for a 15A circuit so you will probably want a dedicated circuit.
    3. The space you are cooling/heating should be appropriately insulated with correctly orientated vapor barrier and venting to prevent moisture build up and mold.
    4. Ours is installed in a mostly refinished attic. A window unit would be unsightly and there is no room to install a through-the-wall A/C. I am in the process of completing the insulation. This means that I cannot give the unit a fair performance assessment; however, even with partial insulation, in A/C mode, it appears to be able to maintain temperature within 15 to 20 degrees F lower than outside ambient.
    5. Expect this dual air intake/ air exhaust design to be much more efficient than single outlet types (we would not consider latter).
    6. Heat pump means that you will be able to heat in winter more efficiently than using electric heater.
    7. Hoses are collapsed accordion type. They accommodate curvatures if you pull out more of the accordions.
    8. Assume the unit was tipped on its side during shipment meaning that you can tip the unit to get it out of the outer box. Once this is done, you can put it in place, cut the straps and lift the inner box off the unit and the unit off the Styrofoam base. BUT PER MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS, LEAVE THE UNIT IN THE VERTICAL FOR 24 HOURS BEFORE TURNING IT ON FOR THE FIRST TIME.
    9. In our case, the window panel kit is fixed in the double hung window only by the weight of the lower (inner) sash of the finished-attic window. The panel is located inside the bug screen and can barely be noticed from the outside. But if the unit will be located in a window which is readily accessible from grade, you should consider how to prevent someone entering through the window.
    10. Provided you are prepared to use a hack saw, you can install the window panel unit in a window a lot less wide than the specified 28" min. (ours is in a 21" wide- check with Technical Support if you are going narrower than this).
    11. As others note, draining the unit is a bit of a pain. However, Technical Service tells me that it is O.K. to continuously drain- since mine is permanently installed, I will probably run a drain line through the exterior wall.
    12. I've called Technical Service three times- longest wait for pick-up was thirty SECONDS!

Comments about Toyotomi TAD-T40LW 14000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Heat Pump:

I live in the mountains of Colorado at an altitude of 8000' where there is very little to almost no humidity. The temps rarely go above the low 80's but for a couple of weeks a year we may hit the upper 80's to low 90's.

I only gave this product a 4 star because I have just started to use it and do not have a lot of operating/cooling time in various rooms to make a final assessment. The unit appears to be very well made and easy to setup. So far I have only used the product in a room that is much larger than it is rated for (living/dinning room combination that is a little over 700' with vaulted ceilings; and the unit is rated for 500'). The outside temp was around the mid 80's and the unit cooled the room to about 76 degrees but no cooler.... but I did place it in a room that is well above the stated size rating of this unit. The unit does pump out cool/cold air so I believe it will be fine in a room that better matches its rating. I am waiting for a warm night to try it in the bedroom (but that may be next season). The fan is powerful so the noise level is similar to a window unit. The unit is heavy but roles well on hardwood floors. It may be difficult to roll it on thicker carpets. It is very easy/simple to operate. Remote works very well and Customer service has been great.

Comments about Toyotomi TAD-T40LW 14000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Heat Pump:

We have a south facing living room with a single PTAC unitl that cannot compete with the summer's direct sunlight. We cannot install additional PTAC unit and after chekcing with a couple of proffesionals we realized that a protable AC was the only option for us. The Super helped us install the pipes in the window by ordering a plexiglass piece (we have tall vertical windows and the attachment provided with the product is not long enough and frankly we wanted safer solution that require some handymenship; at extra cost of course...). I was less concerned about price and wanted to get the strongest unit that will do the work. Unit works very well and easy to operate. We keep it working for long hours and so far very happy. It is somewhat loud (white noise of flowing air) but I cannot tell if it is any louder than comparable units as this is the first portable unit I own. When trying to use the humidifier mode the unit shut down after a short time because the collection tray filled up. Too much hasstle to emty this so we do not use this mode. A/C does not require any draining only when using the humidifier mode.

Comments about Toyotomi TAD-T40LW 14000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Heat Pump:

We purchased the Toyotomi portable air conditioner to cool a 22x24 garage with a 9' ceiling. There is a large freezer and refrigerator located in the garage which put out a lot of heat. Moreover, we drive a car with a hot engine into the garage. In the past, this caused both the freezer and the refrigerator to ice up and shut down. The Toyotomi AC is set to cool down the garage to 77 degrees. It does the job without too much effort. Note that 2 walls in the garage are attached to the home; the other two sides (one of them with an 18'x7' garage door)are open to the sometimes intense Georgia heat. We are very happy with both the product and Sylvane's service.

Comments about Toyotomi TAD-T40LW 14000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Heat Pump:

Bought this for 15x12 bedroom. Needed a portable for a few reasons. One, I rent and utilities are included, so if I want an AC I have to go through a whole ordeal with management, an AC seller and authorized installer, etc, etc. and they also increase my rent by $26/mo every month going forward. Anyway, heatwave came upon us, didn't have time or patience to go through proper channels for standard AC install so went this route. I have two windows in room (on different sides of room) and one wondow is ALWAYS open with a box fan exhausting out because I'm a smoker. Also, my bedroom door MUST stay open at all times because of 2 idiotic cats that call my bedroom home. Even with these factors completely working against the portable A/C, it works great and cools the room quickly and effectively. That's it. (In one year the normal AC install would have cost me 300 in extra rent, 150 for my building to inspect and authorize, and that's before even buying a 'pre-approved' AC on their list for $500 or so. So, not only does it work great, it actually works out to be a bargain for me. (I did insulate the exhaust hose because it gets rather hot and I didn't want the AC to fight against itself so much - even better now).

The unit cools very well, and quickly. gets a small room very cold. The ducts are rigid, and hard to remove. this makes it difficult to put away, especially if one uses it to cool the room during the day, but then open the windows for the night.

Received my air conditioner quickly and well packed. Hooking up was easy, the hardest part was putting appropriate window cover for exhaust. I use it to cool my basement and it does a great job. I wish I had put in a separate outlet for it before I got it, because it cuts the output to my TV and computer. I am currently waiting for an electrician to do that for me. But other than that I am very happy with it.

I use this machine in what I consider to be a relatively small room (approximately 400 square feet) and it does an outstanding job cooling that room as well as adjacent rooms. The only problem is that it is a bit loud; however, that loudness is comparable to most any other air conditioning unit I've ever heard. I will definitely recommend this unit to friends and family who have a need for short-term air conditioning such as we have here in Montana where it's used primarily only during the day on unusually hot days. I don't know how long this unit has been available on the market, but I wish I could have had it years ago. It's great!

I had no idea how noisy this unit is - it is like sitting next to a large bus exhaust. It did cool my studio, so there is nothing wrong with the cooling. I did try to wrap a blanket around the hot exhaust pipe to minimize heating of the room. - I guess it is perfect for a server room. The return shipping to Sylvane via FeEX cost me $86 (plus tip)!!
