We purchased this dehumidifier a few months ago and we are completely satisfied with its performance in our basement where the floor was normally damp and wet.

A real work horse

I bought this dehumidifier because we were starting to get mildew on the walls and stored items in our very large 2 car garage last summer. I read the reviews and decided on the Comfort Aire BHD-501. When it was delivered (in July), I removed it from the box, plugged it in and set the desired humidity level. Worked like a champ, but the reservoir filled up in just a few hours (very damp garage). I decided to use the gravity feed drain. I had a little difficulty figuring out how to attach the Drain hose connection, but after reading the instructions I got it set.
It's been running ever since, without any issues. The mildew has disappeared, and the humidity level has been well controlled. The noise level is not bad. I've had much louder dehumidifiers, and many that didn't live through a whole season. Only time will tell if it lasts, but so far so good. I'm very satisfied.

Does the JOB

My basement gets wet every season and this was a great buy last year. I hope it lasts. I'll update again.

Review of Comfort-Aire Dehumidifier (BHD-501)
Reviewed by: Sheila on 2010-01-04
Our current Comfort-Aire dehumidifier is a replacement under warranty of our previous unit. The previous unit had seal failure at about the one-year mark. We were very disappointed that it failed so soon.
Both the manufacturers and Sylvane coordinated their efforts very efficiently to send us a replacement unit (approximately Oct, 2009). The replacement (and indeed the original unit until its demise) removes water from our very damp basement efficiently; however, the thermostat on the new unit seems to be malfunctioning. Although it has been set to 55%, the unit keeps running even after that goal has been met. We can still use it and hope that this is the only defect that will appear.
The new unit has a slightly different bucket with a longer handle, which I find to be inconvenient when emptying the bucket. It is harder (for me at least) to hold the long handle and get my other hand under the bucket to support it -- as recommended by manual. As I empty, I usually end up with some water on the floor.
On the plus side, the bucket can be put back more easily than in the previous unit, and the unit switches on immediately without the numerous repositioning of the bucket that we experienced with the previous dehumidifier.
The dehumidifier is quite attractive and seems solidly made. We hope this one will last longer than its predecessor.

Don't Buy This Unit

I bought this dehumidifer in July of 2007, it worked great in my basement. Kept the humidity level at 50% In May of 2009, when humidity levels started rising in the Northeast US, I noticed it was not keeping the humidity out of my basement. In July of 2009, I called the manufacturer about getting it repaired as there was a 5 year waranty on the compressor parts. They gave me 2 service centers in my zip code area. I contacted both of them and they both told me they no longer service these units. I contacted the manufacturer and I did not get any help with getting my unit fixed. This was alot of money for a unit that did not even last 2 years!! I would NOT recomend this unit to anyone.
