I wanted an electronic radon detector, and after reading positive reviews about the Pro Series 3, I ordered one. It has been a learning experience from the very first reading that it provided (48 HRS after plugging it in). Radon levels are often changing. In other words, you can do the canister test and the reading may be different the following week, so chasing your radon readings around with this method could be expensive.

This is a great investment and worth every penny. The only real complaint I had was that the manual should have made a couple of things a little more clear and saved me a phone call. I read reviews where some complained about no battery backup, so people thought the unit would have to start over if they lost power, but the unit will actually retain the reading in memory until it regains power, so thats good enough for me.

Also, if it goes to 4.0 or above at any time, the LED will be lit up beside (L) long term and won't switch over to (S) short term until radon levels are below 4.0. Again this is no big deal and they did this on purpose, but it would have beeen nice if it was made clear in the manual. The unit is made in the USA up in MI, which is also good. Go ahead and get one.

The Radon Detector is great. Simply plug it in and get a constant read. It may not be what is legal for real estate transactions, but should be. There are so many ways to alter the static tests (opening widows, increasing activity, shortening the test period, etc) that a week of using this makes much more sense. Plus, once you have it, you keep it in the house and will know if things change or increase in wet weather, etc. I think this is the same as having a CO2 dectector these days. Essential!

Detector is easy to use and it works. I checked the level in my house and it was high. I wanted to check the detector so I used it at a friend's house who has a radon exhaust fan. His level was low. We turned off his fan and rechecked, his level went high. I installed a radon exhaust fan in my house and now the level is low. I think this is a good investment for your health.

Have you ever purchased an in-home radon kit that you open, use to measure radon levels once, and then ship to the lab with payment in order to get results?

I'm working on air quality research at a University, and we've done some of these tests. There are some downsides to doing it that way: you have to pay for each test, you only get a single reading, and you have to pay for subsequent tests.

I was pretty surprised to find that an electronic version for 24-hour monitoring was so cheap. We paid $20 per test for the other tests, so this unit will easily pay for itself after 6 tests. Plus, you can continue monitoring. With the test kits, if you have radon above 4 pCu/L, what do you do? Ventilate your basement, and then perform the test again? This unit we just plugged in and let it monitor constantly, and we can see if the changes we made had any impact on radon levels.

If you only need a single point in time test, then buy a kit, send it to the lab and pay for results. If you want to measure more than once, then do yourself a favor and purchase the Pro Series 3 testing unit.

I was skeptical about the Safety Siren at first, but now I offer it as a quick Radon Screening Test as an option to all of my clients. I ran several standard EPA protocol tests and used the Safety Siren as a mirror. Each time the Safety Siren came back within .1 pCi/L of my Charcoal Tests. I'm sold, and now offer as a quick screen method.
