A humidifier mineral cartridge works to reduce lime and calcium buildup so you spend less time on maintenance. The cartridge will need to be replaced periodically, depending on use. The humidifier is equipped with an automated notification as to when the cartridge needs to be replaced. However, very hard water may shorten the life of the cartridge and require replacement prior to the humidifier notification.
A sign of early replacement need is a white powder residue around the device. If the water used in the humidifier has been treated by a decalcification system, the salt from the treatment can also show up as white dust.

This is the second year that we have used the Vornado Humidifier. We replace the cartridge twice per. We notice the difference immediately when the cartridge needs to be changed. A white film settles down on our furniture, etc. Once the new filter is in place the humidifier no longer sends a white film with the mist.
