Whynter ARC-14S is a great product.
I have been using Portable Air-Conditioner for over 5 years. I did a lot of research before buying this unit to replace the old unit which is not really giving cool air anymore. I just received the unit yesterday (one day of use) and I can tell the big difference in noise, cold air and product design.

1. You can really feel the air output is cold.
2. The design is very nice.
3. I checked the power consumption (with Kill A Watt gadget) and it shows up as 120V and 1080 watts.
4. I like the Dual Hose Design as it does Not use room air to cool the compressor (which I read from online reviews, as such the room will Not lose cool air and also not be affected with Negative air flow)
5. The location on the Unit to fix the 2 hoses is just right (back mid section) which is about 4 inches from the bottom edge of the window (New York City Apartment). I only need about 20 inches of hose. I think the shorter the hose used is good.
6. Unit has 3 modes - Fan, Cooling Mode and Dehumidify modes. That means that I can use the unit 3 seasons in a year, from Spring to Fall.
Spring and Fall - for Dehumidify Mode
Summer - for Cooling Mode
**I will not use the Whynter ARC-14S as a Fan. I will still use a Box Fan as I want to get maximum life span out of the Whynter ARC-14S fan for dehumidify and cooling modes.
7. It has 3 fan speed modes which is great as I can set to Low Fan with Cooling Mode during night sleeping hours when the night temperature is not too high.
8. The unit is not as heavy as I read on many online reviews.
9. The Product is very well packed. I have bought more expensive stuff from more established large companies and none of them packed their products like Whynter.
10. The control panel display on unit is quite bright. Just paste a Post-It Note over it and problem solved.
11. The remote control is good and easy to operate. Just a matter of getting used to the icons/signs (as there are no words). I think I will use the Remote Control instead of the control panels (on front of Unit), so I do not have to bend over to look at the buttons to press so I do Not press the wrong buttons.
12. This unit is very effective in cooling 2 rooms facing west where the Summer Heat can send the room temperature to as high as 93 (most summer afternoons).

A great price, great product, very fast shipping, very good packing.

Huge, But Doesn't Cool As Well As a Window Unit

This product takes up much more room than I expected, especially with the hoses attached, yet it does not provide much cooling power. For the money paid, I could have gotten a window unit that would have performed much better.

Installation was difficult and frustrating. I had to trim the window panel to make it fit my fairly standard-size window and then I had to tape all around it to fill the gaps that remained. It took me a good while to get the window panel in and hoses attached and then I was disappointed with how it performed.

Outstanding customer service and great product! The Whynter 14,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner (ARC-14S) was initially on back order and Sylvane's Customer Service kept me informed of when I would receive the product. They kept me up to date with regular updates via email and phone…I was very impressed. As far as the product, the air conditioner came packaged very well and it was extremely easy to put together and assemble. The instructions that were provided along with the videos of their website were very informative and helpful in putting the unit together. Also, the only tool that was need for assembly was a screwdriver. Once the air conditioner was ready I started it per the instructions and it took just a few minutes for the cooling system to begin. It was a little louder than I expected and I wish the vent at the top would have been designed a little differently in order to disperse the cool air at and angle and horizontally. I feel that referring to the video on the website gave me a clear explanation of all the buttons on the machine and what the function of each one was.
Prior to purchasing this unit I shopped around everywhere and Sylvane had the best price. I'm sure glad that I went with them because, as I stated before, their customer service was outstanding. This also gives me piece of mind knowing that if anything ever goes wrong I'm sure I will be able to count on them to assist me with any issues. Quality product and service…you can't beat that!

Great product. Kinda expensive. But...great thing to have. BIG CON, is the POOR, cruddy, WINDOW plastic unit thingy. If you could IMPROVE that to be "quality", you'd have the ULTRA killer product.

other con: hose is a bit short. Loud. But that's ok. No complaints. The only thing, is the flimsy window installation kit...

It works great for a typical "house" or residential room. However, it as stated that it would be good for larger spaces such as those found in a commercial setting. The latter, is not very accurate. I bought it to last & to evenly cool a space of 1500 sq. ft.... but, that was not the case.

I did a lot of research before I purchased the ARC-14SH air conditioner. I recently vinyl enclosed my screen porch to make a small wood working shop in my mobile home(150 SF). With no insulation on the roof I knew I would need to go overkill to cool the place (I'm in Florida). The high summer temperatures have not hit yet, but on several occasions the room was at 95 degrees, and I was able to bring it down to 80 degrees in less than an hour.
I have not had a lot of time to experiment with it, but so far it seems to be far more efficient without the intake hose connected. That may change as the temperatures get higher.
The only noise you get is from the fan, which isn't bad at all. Not having any outside walls I had to go with a portable unit. I think this AC is fantastic, and does just what I need it to do.

What is the EER rating of this unit?

This unit has an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of 11.2.

Does this unit function independently as a dehumidifier or does it dehumidify while cooling?

The Whynter ARC-14S/SH does have an independent dehumidifier function. The unit dehumidifies somewhat while it cools. However, when operating in the independent Dehumidify mode, full cooling power is reduced to allow it to lower a space's humidity more effectively.

How noisy is this model?

The maximum noise level for the Whynter ARC-14S/H is 56 decibels.

Does this model come with equipment to seal the open portion of the window? Also, will it install in double-hung and horizontally sliding windows?

This model can be exhausted through both vertical-opening and horizontally sliding windows. It comes with a window kit that includes accessories to seal off the open portion of the window. Detailed installation information can be found on page 7 of the Owner's Manual.

Can you vent this unit through the wall? Do you sell kits for this and if so, would I have to purchase it separately?

This portable AC is primarily designed to be vented through a double-hung or sliding window and includes a window venting kit in the package. You can vent the AC through a wall using the included exhaust hose. However, a complete kit for wall venting, including the tools and materials you'll need to create the wall hole, is not available. What is the maximum window width the included installation accessories will work for?

The window kit extends to a maximum width of 36 inches.

What is the minimum window width needed to use the window kit?

The window kit can be shortened to accommodate a minimum window width of 12 inches.

How is the water collected during the A/C process vented from the system? Or does it collect in an on-board tank? Or both?

This Whynter model actually does both. While in Cool mode, water that drips off the evaporator is collected in an internal tank. The hot air exhaust then evaporates and expels it out of the exhaust tubes. Water builds up in the tank while in Dehumidification mode. A drain hose is included and allows the water to drain at this time.

Are the window mounting hoses flexible or fixed angle to the window?

The hoses are flexible, so you can make adjustments. Thank you for your inquiry.

I have two questions: Will blowing rain enter exhaust hoses and damage unit? Will window screens affect efficient operation of unit?

It's possible for rain to enter the hose if the wind is blowing hard enough, but it will not be an issue. The rain will be evaporated by hot air coming out of the exhaust hose. You can leave your screen in place. It shouldn't influence the unit in any way.

Do you have extensions or longer hose capabilities for this product?

Yes, Whynter offers an extension kit. This hose extender fits many models. Note that it's generally suggested that exhaust hoses don't extend more than 9 feet.

This is a dual hose unit; is it a closed loop design where no air is vented outside?

All portable ACs (both single- and dual-hose) need to be vented outside. Dual-hose ACs draw air in with one hose and use the other to exhaust the air. For more information on venting portable ACs, please read our How To Vent Your Portable Air Conditioner article.

Is it true that the Whynter 14-S will not turn on and/or work if the outside temperature is above 95 degrees? Summer is frequently hotter than 95 degrees. Does this 14000-BTU portable air conditioner operate at temperatures above 95 degrees?

This unit is optimized to work in room temperatures between 64°F and 95°F. The hotter it is inside (and outside), the harder the unit will have to work to keep your room cool. It will still work, but make sure to keep up with the maintenance requirements during the summer.

While in cool mode will it will it blow 100 percent of the moisture through the exhaust tube no matter how high the humidity? We've had other models that had to be drained and we want to get away from that concept.

This model offers Whynter's patented auto drain function that fully exhausts all condensate automatically in most environments. In extremely humid conditions, there may be some moisture buildup that can be drained, but most (if not all) moisture will be evaporated and exhausted automatically.

Is it possible to use this unit without the hose? Would it be possible to either not use the hose, or have the water from the hose just collect in a bucket?

You have to vent this unit using the provided hose and window kit. This is not only for getting rid of condensate, but also because it needs to exhaust out the warm room air. The window will need to be sealed (using the window kit), so the unit runs efficiently. For more information about venting your portable AC, please read our How To Vent Your Portable AC article.

How often do you recommend changing the filter?

Whynter suggests washing the filter after about 100 hours of use. You can continue reusing the filter until it becomes physically damaged. For more information, please check out the Owner's Manual.

How do I vent this unit to use the Dehumidify mode?

The manufacturer recommends venting the air exchange hoses INSIDE the room when Dehumidify Mode is selected. This causes the dried air to be vented inside. Some cooling will occur if the unit is vented to the outside.

I need to elevate my unit 4-6 inches so the water continuously drains from the hose at the bottom/back of the unit. How would you suggest doing that?

You can put the unit on a desk or table if you want to raise it higher that a few inches. For 4-6 inches, simply use a flat piece of wood, bricks, stack 2X4's, or anything else to evenly raise your AC. There aren't items that are made specifically for this purpose.
