This Energy Star dehumidifier extracts 50 pints of moisture from your environment each day, providing coverage for humid areas as large as 1,000 square feet. With multiple drainage options, including pump drainage, you'll find the perfect configuration for your space and lifestyle.
Humid air can cause stuffiness in your indoor environment, leave a musty smell in the air, and may even contribute to structural damage throughout your home. If left untreated, excess moisture in the air can also promote mold and mildew growth as well as create a breeding ground for dust mites, which may trigger allergy and asthma symptoms. Maintaining the Environmental Protection Agency's recommended humidity level of between 45 and 50% is important in order to protect your home and your health. The energy-efficient Winix WDH851 50-Pint Dehumidifier can help.

The Winix 50-Pint Dehumidifier with Built-in Pump features an easily removable water collection bucket, a no-leak gravity drain attachment, and a built-in condensate pump. Additional features include:
The Winix WDH-851 Dehumidifier offers three water removal methods. The first method requires you to manually drain the dehumidifier when the water bucket is full. Using the grip handles, simply remove and empty the water container and properly position it back into place. As a second option, the unit features a quick-connect, no-leak gravity drain hose attachment. This allows you to attach a garden hose (not included) to the drain connector and direct the water down into a nearby drain or to an outside location using the force of gravity.
As a third option, a built-in condensate pump will automatically empty water into a location you choose. The drainage pump can lift water up to 15 feet above the dehumidifier into a sink, outside through a window, in a floor drain, to a separate water container, or directly into a household plant. The dehumidifier comes with an 18-foot drain hose for use with the internal condensate pump.
The Winix WDH851 50-Pint Dehumidifier contains several operating modes for exceptional performance and maximum comfort. In Auto Mode, the fan speed is adjusted to maintain a 50 percent humidity level. The fan and compressor run nonstop in Continuous Mode. The continuous indicator will remain lit until the setting is adjusted or the power is turned off.
Humidity Mode allows you to set your ideal humidity level. Adjusting the desired humidity percentage is as easy as pushing the touch button on the control panel. The humidity level can be adjusted from 35 to 70% in increments of 5. The electronic control panel displays the corresponding percentage while the fan cycles on and off to maintain your ideal humidity level.
In addition, the cycle run timer can operate the dehumidifier in programmed cycles of 3, 6, or 12 hours. Once the cycle run time indicator is lit, the dehumidifier will maintain the last humidity level programmed. The control panel will show the time until shut down briefly before returning to humidity level display.
Humid air means warmer, moist air, which makes you feel hot and clammy. As a result, your air conditioner has to work harder to cool your home. When used to supplement to your existing air conditioning system, portable dehumidifiers, like the Winix WDH-851, help accelerate the cooling process and even reduce your cooling costs. Lower indoor humidity means you can enjoy a cooler-feeling space without having to constantly adjust your thermostat.

I recently purchased a home that had developed mold in its basement because the house had been closed up while it sat on the market for nearly a year. After remediation of the mold problem, I was eager to prevent any future mold issues due to a damp basement.
Research led me to the Winix 50 pint dehumidifier (WDH851). I chose this model because it was a cost effective solution "robust enough at 50 pints to meet my needs yet within my budget. I appreciate having three options for disposing of the waste water (bucket, garden hose, or pump) because I was able to immediately set up the unit using the low-maintenance option of a garden hose and will be able to use the pump option when I transition to a more permanent solution.
The unit also has many options for selecting virtually any desired humidity control (particular % humidity, continuous run, etc.). I was a bit apprehensive about setting up the unit, but with easy-to-follow instructions, this proved to be relatively straight forward. I did have to jiggle and re-seat the bucket a few times before the unit would start, but the indicator light clearly specified that this was the issue -- a little persistence and the unit was quietly humming along.
What really tipped the balance for purchasing this unit was the automatic restart. Although power outages are infrequent, from past experience I know how easy it is to forget to re-start appliances. The automatic restart on this unit gives me peace of mind that my basement will continue to stay dry.
I chose to purchase this dehumidifier through Sylvane because they offered the best price that I could find, and I was also able to find a promotional discount on top of their already competitive price. I was most pleasantly surprised with Sylvane's courteous, professional customer service and the extraordinarily speedy delivery.

When it arrived, the Winix had a strange buzz as well as a sheet-metal-rattle when the compressor kicked in. I phoned Winix. They said its defect: send it back. Sylvane's wonderful customer service replaced it right away!
We are very used to the DeLonghi, which has a relatively loud even whoosh to its sound. But we needed a dehumidifier that will shut off when the correct humidity is reached and that will restart when there is a power failure - very important for our cottage! When the set humidity is reached, the Winix will shut off completely (including the fan). Also after a power-failure, the Winix will start up again.
The replacement Winix however does buzz! And it buzzes loud! It does not have the tinny sheet-metal rattle that the 1st Winix had, but it does have a buzz so penetrating, that we cannot occupy the same room that it is working in. We have to move it from room to room. In the same room, you cannot watch TV, and you cannot understand anyone talking - even at the low setting.
Does it remove humidity? Yes it does. But the buzz is rather unbearable. Both Winix's (the defect one and the replacement Winix) had this buzz, so it seems to be designed that way rather than a defect. That penetrating buzz digs into your skull and is much louder and harder to endure than the loud whoosh of the DeLonghi.
It would be nice to have an affordable machine that is a combo of both: the features of the Winix with the quality technology of the DeLonghi.
If you have the cash, I would recommend getting a different machine, but the professional ones cost one grand.

Comments about Winix 50 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH851):
We bought this to replace a Danby, which died after about 3 years of heavy use every summer. Our house is colder than most with no air conditioning, so the Danby would ice up in the spring and fall. We vent our dryer into the garage, so in the winter we need a dehumidifier in the garage. So far this one works great. The Danby was much noisier so we only used it in the house at night. We are currently using this one in the house even during the day. Yes it is noisy, but it is more of a background white noise than the Danby was. We will probably get another one so we can have one in the house and the other in the garage. It is very easy to move back and forth, though. The Danby wheels didn't work as well and moving it was often difficult. We find the included drain line very easy to use, and since it pumps the water up we have more options on where to use it. It has a small diameter, so it is unobtrusive, but that also makes it more likely to move from where you put it. We ran the line behind the refrigerator and across the back of the sink, but once it moved by itself and we ended up with water all over the floor. So now I have attached it to the sink faucet so it will stay put. In the garage, it is small enough that I can stick it down into the floor drain so it stays put. And it is long enough that I can keep the dehumidifier against the wall out of the way and still reach the floor drain out in the middle of the floor. I laid rugs over it so nobody would trip.

I purchased two units, one for basement and one for shop. They are much quieter than the Alen I have and seem to do a better job. The display does not show the actual humudity like the Alen. Set on auto the humidity in my shop has remained at about 45% acording to the guage I have. It is noticeable that the fan switches to high in defrost mode so I know that works. Some other units I have had didn't defrost well. I don't like the water tank, hard to remove and install but since I have installed a drain hose that is not an issue. Hoping it lasts a while.

Happy with easy set up and the unit's performance. Using gravity drain - garden hose into pvc routed through wall to drain outside (but wanted a unit that would give me choice of using built-in pump in other applications). Live in Pacific NW with the rain, installed unit in garage, about 500SF with 9FT ceiling - to keep vintage car, motorcycles, and tools at 60% humidity. Did not expect quiet unit as other reviews commented on noise level. To keep garage at 60% the unit is running 6 hours/day, pulling about a quart of water/day. Not what I call blazing performance, but it's about what I need. I feel I purchased about the right size of dehumidifier, and it seems to be working well. No complaints other than the noise level; I will just turn the unit off when I am working in the garage.

I purchased this particular dehumidifier for the low price and auto pumping feature. I use it in my basement. I drilled a small hole for the 1/4" pump hose about 10 feet above the unit, placed the hose thru the hole to the outside where I wanted it to drain & turned it on. After it filled I configured the auto pump. Easy to do! Works great.

Use to keep lower rooms humid free. Like that it can be set to a specific value and will go on/off to keep that humidity. Quiet, efficient and we easily notice light when pan full. Only dislike is that must empty from back so need to move unit for access.

Comments about Winix 50 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH851):
Although a bit loud, it's perfect for a basement. I had mildew with a strong smell. It started improving the smell on day one and within two weeks, everything was totally improved. It's automatic features work perfect for me, as my cellar stairs are very steep and I needed something that required little to no attention. Set it up to drain into a floor drain and haven't had to do anything more.
