Wow, this humidifier is amazing! We put it in our basement as soon as it arrived. After 27 years in our home, we had water in our basement for the first (and hopefully only) time. Rugs were torn up and thrown out, and wallboard cut up to 1 foot as a result of action from the wet rug. And mold had started almost immediately, with the characteristic musty odor even after the water remediation was completed with fans, dehumidifiers and an air scrubber(aka Heppa filter), all industrial grade.

Even though this was a finished basement, it always smelled like a basement. Musty. We never expected our dehumidifier would remove the smell and so quickly too.

We don't have a sump pump yet -- never needed one (will be getting one installed soon.) We plan to hook our unit up to the sump pump once it is installed using the internal humidifier pump to get rid of the water extraction directly to the sump pump. Nevertheless, since the humidifier has 3 means of water extraction (bucket, gravity and pump), we can use it immediately with the bucket (and love the auto shut off in case it fills before we empty it.) Later, we will hook up the enclosed hose to the sump. The cycle feature is another nice touch, turning the unit on and off as needed.

My wife is very sensitive to sounds and odors, yet she finds it very quiet while operating, and remarked how fresh and clean the air now feels to her a plus she loves the design as well. She recently purchased a heppa filter for the bedroom, yet finds this dehumidifier makes her feel much better and now is considering a second unit for the bedroom.

I would not recommend the Winix 70-Pint Dehumidifier (WDH871). I purchased this unit for the first floor of my home. Shortly after the one-year warranty expired the fan motor started making a noise as if the bearings were going bad. Over the next several months it got progressively louder so I called Winix. The Winix representative informed me that theses units are made in Korea, that they don't stock parts, and there was nothing that they could do. I would have thought a $400 unit would last more than just a couple of years. Its replacement will be from a vendor other than Winix!

Comments about Winix 70 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH871):

I've had this unit for about 7 months. I live in Maryland. I use this in my finished basement. The basement used to be a bit humid, but once the unit was utilized, the basement humidity level was easily kept at 45 percent.

Comments about Winix 70 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH871):

We received the dehumidifier on-time from Sylvane. It has been running for two days now in our home. We set it to "auto" mode with a target of 50% humidity. It has lowered the humidity in the room it is installed in from 65-75% to 45-50% and in the rest of the house to 50-55% (as measured by an electronic hygrometer). The indoor temperature is approximately 70°. While running and maintaining the humidity at 50% it was drawing 0.7 kWh, though it switches the fan and compressor on and off so this is not its continuous power consumption.

It has made the house more comfortable and we do not see condensation on the windows. The bucket filled up after the first 24 hours, as we have not yet used the pump or installed a drain hose. It is too loud to run at night in a bedroom, but it is tolerable to run during the day while we are in an adjacent room. The compressor makes a buzzing sound, but this is mostly covered by the fan noise. The unit switches on and off as needed and works well in auto mode. It works much better and is quieter than a dehumidifier from a different manufacturer that we tried previously. Overall, we are pleased with it to date.

The unit appears to be well constructed. It has wheels and can be easily moved from room to room. It has an easy to operate electronic control panel. When it is first turned on it defaults to "auto" mode, in which it will operate to lower the humidity to about 50%, automatically adjusting the fan speed between low and high. The unit can also be set to a specific humidity level and to operate at a particular fan speed. Some of the features that attracted us were that: it has a built-in pump to empty the reservoir, it will restart after a power failure, and it can operate over a reasonably wide range of temperatures.

Sylvane is offering a 5% discount for a 250 word review--but they had no input into the content above.

Comments about Winix 70 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH871):

We have been in our house for 10 years and the old Kenmore dehumidifier we had purchased our first summer here finally died. I look all over the web and was surprised by all the options that are available with dehumidifiers. I decided to give this unit a try. My 1050 square foot basement is not wet, but it will get musty after 45-60 days of no dehumidifiers being used. This unit promised to turn off when not in use, set and forget, and a pump to drain the water. At this point about 3 weeks into my purchase, everything that was advertised has worked great! The fan can get loud, but since my old Kenmore sounded more like a tank rumbling in the basement, I can't complain. Set up was very easy, I did let the unit sit upright for about 5 hours prior to turning it on. I also placed the unit on 2 inch foam panels to help with any vibrations the plastic wheels might make on my concrete floors. The drain tube was a nice added touch and allowed me to place the unit in the center of my basement, the pump has worked great. This unit took my basement from musty to dry in about 3 days of on/off use. I am very pleased with my purchased and the shipping was very fast. Time will tell with how well the unit does long term. My basement has been very cold and this unit has not frozen up as my old kenmore would do on a regular basis. I am very happy with my purchase. Thanks!

            Good overall

Comments about Winix 70 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH871):

My basement is 1200 square feet, 8 foot ceiling, back filled to the top, and in shale. So it gets very damp. I've had this unit 6 months now, and it probably runs 20 hours a day.

            Pros-
            Very effective at removing moisture.
I like how the fan will shut off after reaching the programmed humidity level, in humidity mode.
Condensate pump is a nice feature, set it and forget it. No need to empty.

            Cons-
A little noisy, doesn't bother me but its probably best in non living spaces.
I've had the condensate pump stay running after the tanks drained, about 5 times now. Usually cycling the tank level switch by removing and replacing the tank fixes it.
No real time relative humidity readout.

We purchased the Winix unit between 1 and 2 years ago. The unit worked surprisingly well even in the winter when the space dropped to 60F. The unit, however, has always had a noisy blower. Today, the blower motor front bearing failed leaving the unit inoperative. My advice: if you purchase one of these and it seems noisier than it should be then call Sylvane customer service as soon as you can.

Comments about Winix 70 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH871):

This product works well, it's quick to set up and does what is supposed to do: it dries ambient air. As other customers have pointed out, it is VERY noisy, not appropriate for a quiet environment (such as bedroom or library). In my case, it is in a finished basement, but no one sleeps or studies there. I use the pump feature, and cross-my-fingers it has been working well so far (a couple of days of hard wrok). Other customers have pointed out that the pump may fail in a year or two; I'll cross that bridge when that happens. The only other problem is the reading of the humidistat from the machine's control panel: I found that it is high by about 5-10%, compared to other digital hygrometers that I set next to the Winix. It is easy to imagine that the dehumidifier will work harder and longer than it is necessary, but it is also easy to fix: I just select a higher
target humidity level that gives me the RH I expected.

Some customers have complained that the air coming out of the Winix is hot: yes, indeed, but that's the way dehumidifiers work. First they cool air to extract water, then they warm it up again to avoid throwing freezing air in the living ambient. Maybe the Winix is too good at that second stage, but I don't find that particularly annoying.

Overall it is a decent machine, and during the first 24 hours I used the bucket just to see how much water it was pumping out the air: in just few hours the bucket was almost full. With that, any potential buyer should remember that this is a noisy appliance, if noise is important to you, don't get it.

Comments about Winix 70 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH871):

My old clunker died on me and I have been researching dehumidifiers for a couple of months, mainly because I didn't see any that thrilled me. It was made of metal and lasted me over a decade. I was disappointed to find they don't make them in metal anymore, so I was a little skeptical. The new ones are all plastic but they have so many features that weren't available 15 years ago. I need one with a pump because I travel a lot, and there are limited models that have pumps. I never even heard of this brand, but it got the best reviews and was the only one where the fan shuts off when not dehumidifying. Why anyone would make a model that runs the fan continuously is beyond me. So much for energy efficiency. This one has all the features I wanted. The pump works excellent and goes up and into to my laundry tub over 12' away. I love the auto feature and I just set it and forget it. I don't think the fan is too loud, as others have said, because it is in my basement, at least on the low setting it isn't. I went for the larger size because it was on sale but it was well worth the upgrade. I heard the bigger capacity models are actually more energy efficient, although I can't attest to that as I have only had it less than a week. Easy setup, they even have a How To video on this website. No leaks, no fuss. I do wish the power cord was longer and the emptying hose for the pump feature so I could tie wrap it along my pipes instead of running it on the floor of my finished basement. It works fast and got the dampness out overnight. I did not find the water pan awkward as others have said, nor have I had any leaks. I have not used the gravity drain feature and don't plan to, since I have the pump. I purchased the extended warranty for peace of mind, but I don't expect to use it. This item is built tough and seems very solid. Buy this product, you won't be disappointed.

Comments about Winix 70 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH871):

I needed to replace an old, inefficient dehumidifier that I've been using to reduce the moisture level and musty smell in my 1200 square foot finished basement. I chose this unit for two primary reasons: (1). It could handle rooms up to 1500 sq ft and (2). It has a built-in condensate pump. The pump is almost a necessity unless you enjoy manually dumping the water bucket once or twice per day.

Right out of the box I was able to set up the unit, program it and install the approx. 18 foot small tubing (provided with the unit) into the outlet for the pump. (Since I don't have a floor drain in the basement, I've currently got the tube emptying out into the bathtub as a temporary set up. I will probably run the tube outside at a later date). This was very simple and took approx. 10 minutes.

This unit is certainly more powerful than my previous unit because within just a few hours of operation I noticed a small amount of water in the bathtub (I had closed the drain so I could confirm the pump was working) and a noticeable decrease in the musty odor.

The fan noise is slightly loud but acceptable considering the amount of square feet it has to dry.

I am extremely pleased with my purchase!!!

Comments about Winix 70 Pint Dehumidifier (WDH871):

This is the second of these Winix 70 pint dehumidifers I've bought from Sylvane since early this summer. The one at home worked so well, we bought a second for the very damp basement in an ocean vacation rental property in Maine. This removed the humidity form our damp basement at home in a few days and keeps it low without turning on and off and running quietly when it does run. We empty that one frequently but will be using the gravity drain in the ocean place. We have a good, but not adequate humidifier here and it runs too often and doesn't quite dry it--the Winix will-it has the capacity and does a great job. It also runs at much lower temperatures than most dehumidifers and is energy efficient.
