Window ACs are pretty easy to install and these days you can program them like a central AC. But like anything else you buy, they’re not perfect. We don't get a ton of complaints, but there are 5 common issues that come along with some window ACs. Check out our solutions below if your model is keeping you cool but cramping your style. There may be hope...and for almost no money.
I’m Scared it’s Going to Fall Out of My Window
If a window AC is installed properly, you don’t have anything to worry about. But I’m a worrier, so I get it. The idea of your AC plummeting to the ground isn’t a pretty thought. The best way to avoid it is follow your installation instructions carefully.
But you have options if you’re like me and always expect the worst. An extra window air conditioner installation kit and window AC accessories can add extra support to your model.
For smaller, less visible support, consider AC support brackets that attach to your window sill. When screwed in, they help add support to the back of your window AC. One bracket is for ACs 10,000 BTUs and smaller, and another model is available for larger ACs. Certainly one of these three air conditioner support bracket options will give you some peace of mind if you're installing a room window AC.
Rain and Dripping Water Create an Annoying “Ping” Sound
Who doesn’t love cuddling up to a good book or binge-watching Netflix on a rainy day? It’s a favorite weekend activity of mine regardless of the weather. But nothing interrupts a cozy afternoon like the “ping” sound from heavy rain hitting your window AC. Even worse, people who live in large apartment buildings have to deal with dripping window ACs from above on hot summer days. It’s one of those sounds you can’t un-hear once you’ve heard it. Surprisingly, most customers say the natural sound from window AC operation quickly becomes background noise, but the dripping sound can ruin a quiet night at home.
Luckily, Frost King created an easy solution to this problem. Their window AC drip cushion is one of those inventions you really wish you had thought of yourself. It’s nothing more than a water-absorbing pad with a magnetic back. Install it, and the annoying drip won't ever interrupt your lazy, rainy Sunday again. Here's how it works: You just need to measure it to match the length of your window AC.
Then, you can easily cut it with standard scissors.
Then place the magnet side down on top of your AC.
And don’t worry, we installed one ourselves to try it out - the heavy-duty magnetic back really does stay put. I couldn’t pull it off when I tried.
Air Leaks Through Gaps Around the Unit
While we don’t get this complaint very often, it’s more serious than the other ones mentioned here. Cracks allow air to flow in and out of your apartment, which is like running your car AC with the windows cracked. You’re not paying to cool outside, right? And you certainly want your AC to run as efficiently as possible. Your first line of defense is weather stripping.
If your AC comes with weather stripping, use it. If you still notice any gaps around your AC, there’s a simple solution. Add a weather seal wherever you see gaps. You can just cut it and squeeze it in where it's needed. It takes almost no effort and will seal in your cold air, and keep out hot, muggy summer air.
Here's how it looks if you install the air conditioner weather seal across your entire window:
The Incoming Air Doesn’t Seem Filtered
Most window ACs come with some type of washable filter to catch large particles from your air. But some people are looking for better filtration or need to replace an old or torn filter. The Frost King Window AC filter is a tightly-woven nylon filter that is actually thicker, more durable, and more tightly-woven than most standard window AC filters. It works in just about any AC too, since you just cut it to match the size you need and slide it in where your old filter was. There will likely be plenty left in the package for future use too!
What About the Off-Season?
Ideally, people remove and store their window AC when winter weather hits. But in reality, most people don’t. It seems like a hassle, and where are you going to store it? If you’re struggling to answer those questions, consider a cover that protects your AC from tough winter weather and doesn't require any tools - just slip it over your AC.
The best part of all of these accessories is they’re all super affordable, most are under $20. It’s a small investment to add a little extra comfort to your life. Adding a few of these will certainly make your AC great (again).
