Take back your comfort and protect the investment you made in your home when you use the Aprilaire Model 400 or Model 400M Whole House Humidifier! This bypass in-duct humidifier works with your existing heating, ventilation, and cooling system (HVAC) and ductwork to deliver comfortably humidified air throughout every room of your home. It uses an efficient evaporative humidifying process to raise your home’s relative humidity, adding 17 gallons of moisture per day. That’s enough to treat tightly sealed homes up to 4,000 square feet, average sealed homes up to 2,000 square feet, and loosely sealed homes around 1,000 square feet.
How It Works
When connected to your HVAC system, the Aprilaire Models 400 and 400M Bypass Whole House Humidifiers humidify your home using a natural evaporation process. When the humidifier's controller triggers a need for more humidity, water automatically flows from the connected water line into a distribution tray located at the top of the humidifier. Water is distributed evenly across the width of this tray and directed to flow over Aprilaire’s patented Water Panel evaporator into the heart of the humidifier. Moisture from the distribution tray is then evaporated into the incoming dry air, creating comfortably humidified air. Humidified air is then distributed throughout your home through your HVAC system’s return duct and with the help of the blower.
Requires No Drain, Minimizes Water Use
The Aprilaire Model 400 Whole House Humidifier is a drainless whole house humidifier that minimizes water usage and eliminates the problem of standing water. It’s ideal for homes with septic systems, for install locations where a floor drain is not available, and for homeowners interested in conserving water. During operation, the evaporative action of the Water Panel succeeds in using 100% of the water delivered to the system. That’s true efficiency. Plus, no standing backlog of water inside the system eliminates stagnant water and ensures that the humidified air stays fresh and clean.
Choose from Aprilaire 400 (Automatic) and Aprilaire 400M (Manual)
Two Aprilaire 400 models are available.
- Model 400: Comes with a digital humidity controller that supports both automatic “set it and forget it” operation and manual humidity control.
- Model 400M: Comes with a manual humidity controller that supports manual humidity control only.
Thorough instructions and guidance for setting, adjusting, and maintaining an ideal humidity level using the controllers are included with each model.

Great system for heat pumps lot humidifiers have a constant drain and with heat pumps not producing real hot temperatures they waste lot water. This system doesn't have active drain if bottom reservoir is full the filter material wicks the moisture back up the panel. Or runs new water from top of panel. Depending on your water may have to replace twice during winter.
