More about Fogging Machines, Remediation Chemicals, & Disinfectants

What Are Fogging Machines Used For?

Contractors and facilities managers country-wide use Sylvane fogging machines for large-scale sanitization day in and day out. They’re the go-to choice for compliant and cost-effective disinfection procedures in a variety of industries.

Some of those disinfectant fogging machines include:

  • Disinfection: Eliminate harmful bacteria where many people pass through, like in schools, offices, healthcare facilities, transit spaces, and more.
  • Mold and Mildew Prevention: Stop invasive moisture in its tracks. Unchecked moisture can cause irreversible damage in vulnerable areas like basements and crawl spaces.
  • Odor Removal: Get rid of unpleasant or potentially harmful smells in restoration sites and rental properties. Many vehicle technicians use foggers, too.
  • Pest Control: Deal with pests quickly using specialist fogging chemicals designed for humane disposal.
  • Fire and Smoke Restoration: Neutralize lingering particulates and smells quickly and efficiently.

Types of Fogging Machines

Disinfecting misting machines are make-or-break tools in specialized environments. Getting the right one is critical. This breakdown should help you decide which type of disinfectant fogging machine is best for your needs, saving you unnecessary hold-ups and expense..

Two of the main types of misting machines we offer are:

  • Cold Foggers (ULV foggers): These smart units use air pressure to create a fine mist—no heating necessary. This makes them safe for most common uses in enclosed spaces, like disinfecting a basement.
  • Thermal Foggers: These systems use heat to vaporize chemical solutions into dense fog. They’re ideal for outdoor use or large open spaces, like pest control and agriculture. Like with cold foggers, you should always follow safety protocols and allow some time before re-entry (time depends on the model and chemicals).

FAQs

What’s the difference between a cold fogger and a thermal fogger?

A cold disinfectant fogging machine (what we call a “ULV” fogger) uses air pressure to create fine mist at room temperature. A thermal fogging machine, on the other hand, uses heat to produce a denser fog. The latter is often used for outdoor or pest control.

Is ULV fogging safe around people or electronics?

Yes, as long as you’re using approved systems (like those found at Sylvane) in well-ventilated areas. You should avoid direct contact with electronics to prevent moisture damage and wait a while before entering the building, however.

Can I use any disinfectant or chemical in a fogging machine?

No. You should only ever use chemicals specifically labeled for fogger use. This keeps users safe and avoids costly equipment damage.

How large of a space can these machines cover?

It depends on the model, specifically the droplet size. In general, though, they can treat from a few hundred to over 10,000 square feet.

Do foggers kill mold, bacteria, or viruses?

Yes, if used with an EPA- or equivalent-approved biocide or disinfectant for the targeted pathogen.

How long does it take to fog a room and let it settle?

Small rooms might only take around 5 to 10 minutes to fully fog, but you’ll need to wait 30 to 60 minutes for the fog to settle before anyone re-enters the room.
