Description
Exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. And according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 1 out of every 15 homes harbors a dangerous level of radon. This "silent killer" is an odorless, tasteless, and colorless gas that seeps into your home from ground soil through cracks in the walls and floors. That means you and your family might unknowingly be inhaling a toxic cancer-causing gas at this very moment. Nervous yet? There's help. Fortunately, high radon exposure is 100% preventable. A short-term radon test kit like the AccuStar PicoCan 400 Charcoal Canister test kit can help get you on your way to creating a safer home.
Ideal for Short-Term and Initial Radon Testing
AccuStar PicoCan 400 Charcoal Canisters, available in a single or double pack, provide an initial screening of radon gas levels in your home. Single test kit packs include one test canister and are best used for an initial screening test to detect unhealthy radon levels or a screening test to assess the performance of an existing radon mitigation system. Double test kits contain 2 test canisters and are designed to be used in real estate transactions following the EPA simultaneous testing protocol. Each PicoCan 400 canister includes 75 grams of activated charcoal held in place by a metal screen. Through exposure to the indoor air, the charcoal absorbs radon particulates to assess the total concentration levels in your air.
The Testing and Analysis Process
To test your home, you'll place a PicoCan 400 canister in a regularly used area on the lowest level of your home and leave it exposed for 48 to 96 hours. For proper testing, you must maintain closed house conditions for 12 hours before the test and during the exposure period. Leave your test device(s) open for a minimum of 48 hours and a maximum of 96 hours. After testing, close and secure the lid with the parts included in your kit. Complete your data sheet and mail the canisters immediately back to AccuStar's lab for analysis. Each kit includes a mailing envelope with first class postage. AccuStar will send your results report to you via email or mail on the next business day after receiving your device. You can also view your results on the AccuStar website or by calling AccuStar's 24-hour toll-free phone number. All of this information is included with your kit instructions. Once you have the results of your test, you can take steps to mitigate high radon levels or improve an existing radon mitigation system. .
Additional Features
- Choose Single or Double Package - Purchase a single or double device testing kit for more than one area or for re-testing. If you are a real estate professional using this test for a transaction and following EPA protocol, choose the double kit.
- Fast Results - You'll get results from this short-term test on the next business day after the lab receives your sample.
- Delivers Average Radon Concentration - Your results will report the average level of radon concentration over the exposure period in picoCuries per liter (pCi/L)
