The Friedrich Wallmaster baffle adapter kit is necessary when installing a Wallmaster thru-the-wall air conditioner in a sleeve deeper than 16 3/4 inches deep, such as a Fedders B sleeve. The kit comes complete with baffle and mounting hardware and extends the Wallmaster unit to 19 3/4-inch deep.

Is this necessary?
I bought this to install inside my wall sleeve because it is over 19 inches deep and the unit is closer to 16 inches. I cannot discern the purpose behind it. It is basically a piece of metal with some padding/weatherstripping on it. I bought and installed it because that's what the instructions said but not really sure why.
