An inline duct fan is mounted on the ductwork and brings in fresh air from outside to circulate within the home while removing the stale inside air and pushing it outside. These are especially helpful in ventilating wet spaces such as kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms to remove excess moisture and prevent mold and mildew growth.
Choosing the Right Inline Duct Fan
There are three main types of inline duct fans used in businesses, homes, and facilities, and knowing the difference can help you make the best choice for your needs.
- Axial Inline Fans: These fans contain a single propeller to move large amounts of air at low pressure with minimum restrictions and in short lengths of ducting without branches or bends. These axial fan motors are ideal for small spaces like a toilet, bathroom, laundry room, or installation with minimal ducting (approximately less than 10 feet).
- Centrifugal Inline Fans: Unlike axial motors, these centrifugal fans are designed to move large volumes of air against high pressure and within long duct runs, which may include junctions, bends, and multiple inlets/outlets. These are ideal for significant heat transfer systems, large subfloor ventilation systems, or servicing a large area with a vast amount of ducting (approximately 65 feet or more).
- Mixed flow Inline Fans: This third type of fan combines the previous two. It has good pressure and airflow characteristics and can be used with longer duct runs with branches and bends. It’s ideal for light commercial or domestic ventilation, especially in large domestic bathrooms. It can also be used in medium or large rooms like bathrooms, laundry rooms, or general installation with moderate ducting (approximately 1 to 60 feet).
